What do the statistics, not the stereotypes, about killings by the police tell us?

Stereotypes are used to justify discrimination and violence. Michael Johnson wanted to kill white officers because of police killings of Black people, law enforcement officials alleged.
While no serious person believes the first stereotype, we are being told that the second one is true. A Black CNN commentator indicated that if a detained Black man does not fight the police “we die." Sen. Cory Booker claimed that “many” “mostly unarmed” Black men were “being murdered by police officers.”

In 2015, a group called the National African American Gun Association formed with the intention to “promote self-protection.” Since the 2016 election, this organization has seen its membership soar, in some measure due to the concern (I would argue the fact) that the president of the United Sates is a racist who is emboldening racism in our society. The more black Americans embrace or utilize their Second Amendment rights in public, however, the more you see alarm being expressed by people who are traditionally “pro-gun.” |

A number of new laws will go into effect on July 1, and some of the most anticipated in this area allow localities to remove Confederate statues and new gun laws.
However, localities cannot just immediately decide to remove a Confederate statue, and the localities that declared themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries last fall still have to follow new gun laws. |

Ahead of new guns laws that take effect in Virginia on Wednesday, gun owners in the Roanoke Valley are speaking out about the new restrictions.
Gun owners, including Aliya Fitz-El, stopped at Roanoke Firearms to stock up.
“I bought a handgun today just to protect my family and just to make sure we’re always safe,” said Fitz-El. “I just think that everyone should be able to exercise their right to carry.”
The new legislation that takes effect includes a one-handgun-a-month limit. A lawsuit filed by gun rights lobbyists to block the law was denied by a judge last week. There are exemptions for people who have concealed carry permits, for trade-ins, and law enforcement. |

This week, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled to uphold the state’s ban on large capacity magazines, HB13-1224, which was signed by then-Governor John Hickenlooper in 2013.
In the court opinion, Justice Marquez wrote that the ban “is reasonably related to that legitimate — and increasingly critical — state interest” and “has neither the purpose nor effect of nullifying the right to bear arms in self-defense” outlined in the Colorado Constitution. |

Despite claims to the contrary by some firearms advocates, NICS has not been fixed. It is badly broken, and instead of “fixing” it, we should have a serious discussion about repealing this significant infringement on the right to keep and bear arms.
Way back in 1993 when Congress was debating what would become the Brady Law, GOA predicted that people who can lawfully purchase a gun would, at worst be denied that right and, at best have the right delayed — because contrary to the claims of politicians on both sides of the aisle, instant checks are NOT instant. Hence, GOA has consistently opposed NICS and every single misguided attempt to “FIX NICS.” |

Born and bred in World War II, over six million M1-, M1A1-, M2- and M3-carbines were made in total from 1942 to 1945. It was the most widely produced American military arm of the era, even surpassing M1 rifle production by at least half a million and not one was made in a U.S. Army Ordnance Department arsenal. Ten private factories produced the majority of them (mostly semi-auto M1s) in a fury of wartime production. Serious carbine collectors usually won’t rest until they have at least one example from each firm. |

Newport News City Council members have a draft of a new regulation that would ban the open carry of firearms in city buildings.
A slew of gun bills will go in effect Wednesday, including one that would allow city and county governing bodies to ban guns in their buildings and other areas they own or control. Newport News Del. Cia Price pitched the bill in the General Assembly, and her father, Mayor McKinley Price, has taken it up in the city.

We have discussed the threat that corporate gun control poses to our Second Amendment rights multiple times. One of the threats is when companies like Salesforce have attempted to leverage their products to force companies to go along with infringements on our right to keep and bear arms. In many ways, the fight for our Second Amendment rights has now expanded to the boardroom and cubicle.
That said, the biggest threat is the financial blacklist. If banks, credit card companies, and credit unions refuse to do business with Second Amendment supporters or the firearms industry, any legal battle won at the Supreme Court can be rendered meaningless. |

The Legislature wisely withheld action on another mostly expressive action and ended the session without acting on House Bill 2817: “permitless carry,” a cousin of “constitutional carry,” the ability to legally carry a firearm without going through the permitting process. Permits are now granted only after required safety training. |

At anti-racism rallies and marches across the country, protesters are coming face to face with police — but also with heavily armed civilians. America’s gun laws make it difficult to diffuse the tension.
Armed counterprotesters, mostly white and some members of the militia movement, have confronted anti-racism rallies in at least 33 states, according to a review of reporting and social media by Guns & America. Some say they’re there to protect businesses. Others oppose the Black Lives Matter movement. Some have acted like police, stopping protesters and demanding identification. |

This week the New Hampshire Senate passed the so called “red flag bill” (HB 687) that would establish “extreme risk protection orders” to confiscate firearms and ammunition from anyone deemed to pose an immediate risk of harm to themselves or others.
Much of the discussion around this bill focused on preventing firearm suicides. Every human life lost is a tragedy and the lethality of firearms makes guns an understandable target for those looking to save lives. Taking the guns away seems like an easy solution. After all, no one really needs a gun, right? |

The most accomplished of liars eventually come to believe their own lies. And so it is that the people who have been insisting for years that “nobody wants to take away your guns” cannot stop repeating that lie even when they are openly proposing the confiscation of the most commonly owned firearms in the United States.
In March, Joe Biden threatened to slap a construction worker from Michigan after the worker told him he was worried that Biden wanted to “take away our guns.” “I’m not taking your gun away at all,” Biden said angrily, pointing his finger in the man’s face and cursing at him. “That’s bull----.” For this outburst, Biden was widely praised in the press. |
