The Ruger SP101 made its debut in 1988. It was a small-frame revolver intended to be the stablemate for the GP100 that had supplanted the firm’s small Security-Six wheelgun. The SP101 was originally designed as a .38 Special, but according to the book Ruger & His Guns, defense expert Massad Ayoob convinced Bill Ruger it should be a .357 Magnum—albeit one that handled only the 125-grain .357 load.

With me, the old adage “if you love what you do, you never work a day in your life,” rings true. Last Sunday night, the Armed American Radio “Monstercast” show heard in hundreds of cities across the country is evidence of why I feel the way I do. Alan Gottlieb, the founder of The Second Amendment Foundation and frequent guest on the program, was the sole visitor in hour one, as he often is. Like other regular appearances on Armed American Radio and Gun Talk with Tom Gresham, as well as other media outlets, Alan can be counted on to educate those of us who support the right to bear arms like no other.

A new class, which is open to the public, is meant to teach participants what to do if faced with such an event. Kris Mayfield, who has spent 28 years in law enforcement, many as a special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, is teaching an Active Shooter Survival class at Spring Guns and Ammo’s Spring location at the end of July. “The class is designed to let people know that these are the circumstances you might find yourself in and what you can to do get out of there alive if you’re confronted with an active shooter situation,” Mayfield said.

Modern pistolcraft stresses a firm two-handed firing grip on the gun because it’s the best way to deliver fast and accurate fire. The drawback for those involved in a violent self-defense encounter, however, is that two hands may not always remain functionally available. There is a real possibility of suffering a wound to the gun hand, or the arm behind it, during a shooting confrontation. That can render the strong hand or arm inoperable.

President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court Monday night shows that long fought out cases involving the Second Amendment could actually be taken to the highest court if he is confirmed. Ed Whelan writes at National Review that in the subsequent case to the Supreme Court’s landmark decision on the Second Amendment in D.C. v. Heller, the D.C. circuit court that Kavanaugh serves upheld the district’s ban on the possession of most semi-automatic rifles and the requirement that all firearms be registered, but Kavanaugh dissented saying in part.

Rex and Cathy Wattles of R.W. Firearm Sales in Bronson have been in business for the last 21 years, during which time they’ve sold more than 8,000 guns. In June of this year, they bought 75 guns and sold 65, but summer is typically a slow time for gun sales, they said. That wasn’t the case in 2017, however. That’s when a new caliber of gun came onto the market for hunting in Michigan. Gun purchasers were put on a waiting list at R.W. Firearm Sales for the .450 Bushmaster. At that time, the business was selling and buying about 125 guns per month.
