"Sixty people are killed by gunfire every hour, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said in a speech Monday, noting that the vast majority of victims are women and children."

"Roughly half a million people are killed each year by small caliber firearms, Annan said at the first-ever UN conference against small arms and light weapons, who called the deadly weapons 'a global scourge.' "

-------
Wouldn't it be interesting to find out how many of those likely exaggerated 60 lives are claimed by corrupt governments, corrupt cops, or potential victims defending themselves?

"This week, the first contingent of local officers began carrying a new, more powerful sidearm that will replace the Italian-made semi-automatics many of them have used for 15 years."

"The department is trading in its approximately 160 Beretta 9mm handguns for the Glock 22 and 23, which fire a heavier, more powerful .40-caliber round. In doing so, Danbury police join many other law enforcement agencies nationwide, including the FBI, that have already made the switch."

"Some two dozen officers successfully qualified to carry the new weapons during training sessions Monday, Camara said. Instructing and qualifying all officers probably will take about 10 days, he said."

Second item on page.

"While Minnesota congregations struggle with a new gun law Mount Zion Lutheran Church, Tucson, Ariz., uses guns to attract new members. The Mount Zion Sportsmen's Group meets monthly and invites those who enjoy shooting sports to join a Christian fellowship organized around their interest. The group also sponsors community classes on gun safety, home defense and the 16-hour Arizona concealed carry permit course."

Not all churches are anti-gun. Ironically, while other churches make a lot of noise about gun control, some are very successful in attracting new members with a pro-gun attitude.

"Thanks to a last ditch effort by FCI and a team of pro-gun leaders, AB-50 (California's proposed ban on all .50cal rifles and ammo) was defeated today in the Senate Public Safety Committee. FCI President John Burtt traveled to Sacramento to testify and was joined by the NRA's Ed Worley, California Rifle and Pistol Association's Jerry Upholt, Gun Owners of California's Sam Paredes and Safari Club's Kathy Lynch."

"AB-50 had been pulled from last week's committee schedule and in the interim, FCI presented Committee members with documented expert testimonials that dispelled the ridiculous anti-gun myths put forth by the backers of the 50 ban. The bill was heard today in Committee and defeated. It is effectively dead for this session, although we expect anti-gun forces to try again next year."

Authorities say a Newark city police officer was shot by his own service weapon while he struggled with a suspected drug dealer. Officer Edward Cunha was shot once in the hand Wednesday night during a brawl that occurred inside a Newark home.

Police say the five-year veteran was on patrol with two other uniformed officers when they saw Tylone Moore allegedly selling drugs near the home. Moore then fled into the house as the officers approached him.

Moore broke free after the gun discharged but was captured a short time later in a nearby yard. He was charged with drug offenses. A charge of aggravated assault on a police officer is pending.

Cunha is being treated at University Hospital in Newark where his wound is not believed to be life-threatening.

"...Alex Lee, the chief political officer at the U.S. embassy in Bogotá, and Stewart Tuttle, who heads the embassy's human rights division, met with representatives of the so-called 'United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia' (AUC,) a right wing paramilitary group with strong ties to the Colombian military that has terrorized dissidents and poor people in Colombia for the past decade."

"The U.S. State Department has officially designated the AUC as a Foreign Terrorist Organization--meaning that the meeting definitely violated the State Department's policy of not negotiating with terrorists, and may also have violated the PATRIOT Act. An embassy official speaking on the condition of anonymity said that the meeting's sole purpose was to reiterate the State Department's desire to see the arrest and extradition of AUC leaders Salvatore Mancuso and Carlos Castano, who are wanted for drug trafficking in the U.S."

"But this story doesn't hold water. Would the State Department meet with representatives of Al Qaeda to remind them that it wants to see Osama bin Laden arrested and extradited? Even that would make more sense than this meeting--bin Laden is in hiding, but Castano routinely grants interviews to the press, published a bestselling book last year, and even made a recent appearance on a talk show in which he issued veiled death threats against opponents of Colombian President Alvaro Uribe."

"The new conservatives claim the power to violate citizens' private lives because there is no 'right to privacy' in the United States." ...

"The simple reality is that there are many 'rights' that are not specified in the Constitution, but which we daily enjoy and cannot be taken away from us by the government. But if that's the case, Bush and Thomas would say, why doesn't the Constitution list those rights in the Bill of Rights?"

"The reason is simple: the Constitution wasn't written as a vehicle to grant us rights. We don't derive our rights from the constitution."

"Rather, in the minds of the Founders, human rights are inalienable - inseparable - from humans themselves. We are born with rights by simple fact of existence, as defined by John Locke and written by Thomas Jefferson in the Declaration of Independence. 'We hold these truths to be self-evident,' the Founders wrote. Humans are 'endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights....' These rights are clear and obvious, the Founders repeatedly said. They belong to us from birth, as opposed to something the Constitution must hand to us, and are more ancient than any government."

"In the end, Lawrence is a very simple ruling. Justice Kennedy examined the conduct at issue to see if it was properly an aspect of liberty (as opposed to license), and then asked the government to justify its restriction, which it failed adequately to do. The decision would have been far more transparent if Justice Kennedy had acknowledged what was really happening (though perhaps this would have lost some votes by other justices). Without this acknowledgement, the revolutionary aspect of his opinion is concealed, and it is rendered vulnerable to the ridicule of the dissent. Far better would have been to more closely track the superb amicus brief of the Cato Institute which he twice cites approvingly."

"Philips said the number one rule when handling a gun is to point the muzzle in a safe direction. He said to never point the gun at anyone or anything that is not the intended target."

'If someone gets hurt, people blame the gun, but that's not correct. The person with the gun should also blame themselves,' he said. 'Does the gun have a brain? No. If it is picked up, where does its brain come from? It comes from the person who is holding the gun.' "

"Cheap, portable and readily available: every year more than half a million people are killed through the misuse of small arms such as handguns, assault rifles and grenades. Millions more are crippled. With poverty providing an ideal breeding ground for small arms proliferation, African countries are currently the worst hit by a global epidemic of armed violence which threatens the safety and well being of people in developed and developing countries alike."

"As someone who taught history for many years, I cannot describe how irritating it is to hear that Abraham Lincoln fought the 'American Civil War' in order to free the slaves, that FDR saved this country from the Great Depression, that the first amendment to the US Constitution guarantees the right to publish pornography, and that 'assault weapons' have been the greatest source of crime and violence in the US during the last century. And yet, it is easy to see how well-intentioned people, who have not yet grasped the extent to which they have surrendered to media and government types the ability to think for themselves, can buy into these notions. They are packaged very cleverly, with bits and pieces of information that are verifiably true. And let’s not forget to consider those mouthpieces doing the convincing-very impressive. All kinds of advanced degrees from this school or another, a book tour, a radio or TV show, you name it."

[Here is the source study showing that "more than 50% of dealers would be willing to sell illegally."]

Results: Most dealers were willing to sell a handgun regardless of the end user.

"Dealers within each city were randomly assigned to one of two interviewers, one male and one female. Interviewers called the sampled firearm dealers posing as potential handgun purchasers. Interviewers followed a predetermined script that began with 'Hi, do you sell handguns?' If not, the dealer was thanked and the call was terminated. If the dealer said yes, the interview continued with one of three a priori randomly assigned conditions, specifically: (1) 'I’m looking to buy a handgun for myself,' (2) 'I’m looking to buy a handgun for my girl/boyfriend for her/his birthday,' or (3) the intentionally ambiguous situation of 'My girl/boyfriend needs me to buy her/him a handgun'."

"Now for the infamous gun issue. I get a kick out of the popular 'there's no reason for the average civilian to own an assault weapon' hogwash. O.K. Why should anyone own an assault weapon? Why should soldiers be issued assault weapons, why should our enemies be allowed to carry assault weapons? Why should assault weapons exist in the first place? I have an idea, I'll just make myself a soy/veggie burger and drink organic carrot juice while I meditate to the spirit of the [insert cute, furry endangered animal here] and implore that my aura be projected into the past so it can dis-invent assault weapons (and while its there, it can hand out flowers and dime-bags of marijuana in an effort to weave peace into our herstory). What gets me is that liberals, while complaining about 'fairness' in all walks of life, would simultaneously give you a flower and a criminal an assault weapon. Here's where the average liberal says, 'that's not what we're saying. We should make laws to keep assault weapons out of criminals' hands, too.' To put this into perspective, I'd like to propose that we pass a law that makes it illegal to fly aircraft into buildings for the purposes of terrorism. Think about it. Now, if you can't see the futility of this proposition then you may have an acute case of liberalism."

"The organization thinks laws are needed to force the gun industry to stop making military-style assault weapons available to the public. They are not used for hunting or sport, Miller said.

Maybe we should get car manufacturers to stop making cars that drive over 75 miles per hour. After all, they have no other purpose than to speed and break speed limit laws. Speeding kills, and that doesn't seem to us to be a "legitimate civil purpose."

You must understand, therefore, that there are two ways of fighting: by law or by force. The first way is natural to men, and the second to beasts. But as the first way often proves inadequate one must have recourse to the second. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
