"Applauding the blunt honesty of Oldmans Township, NJ Mayor Harry Moore in his resignation letter to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the Second Amendment Foundation today said Moore's candor should be an inspiration to everyone who opposes political demagoguery. Mr. Moore is the sixth mayor to quit the coalition."

"'Regrettably,' Moore wrote in his letter to Bloomberg, 'it has become abundantly clear to me that you are using this coalition of mayors to advance a hidden agenda of bringing lawsuits against members of the firearms industry and spreading anti-gun propaganda.' ..." ...

"Since before the birth of this nation, Americans had firearms in the home. Today, firearm ownership by private citizens accounts for over 2.5 million acts of self defense every year. In most cases, the gun is never fired and no blood is shed. Such incidences are regularly documented in newspapers across the country."

"While a criminal may be taking a risk by breaking and entering an armed home, the homeowner may also be taking a risk by shooting the invader even if the homeowner felt that her life was in imminent danger. Many states have laws requiring the homeowner to retreat first." ...

"Cybercast News Service's coverage of the privacy-invading actions by The Sandusky Register, and the response by gun rights groups in Ohio, has shined a national spotlight on this problem."

"CNSNews.com has now published a series of excellent letters written in response to their initial coverage." ...

"'The most serious outcome of this outrageous publishing of gun owners' names and addresses is the 'road map' this provides criminals who now know where to break in and steal weapons. Easily traceable stolen registered firearms that result in crime from this article could perhaps result in Matt Westerhold, the publisher, being indicted as an accomplice to any resultant felonies. ..." ...

... "Newspapers last month reported that Horatio Miller allegedly said that it could be 'worse than Virginia Tech' if someone broke into his car, because there were guns there. ... Miller was arrested, but not charged with anything."

"... Miller was a concealed carry permit holder who, as such, had passed vigorous background checks ..."

"Regardless, the county district attorney did not like what he had said, so, according to the Harrisburg Patriot News on June 20, 'I contacted the sheriff and had his license to carry a firearm revoked. And I asked police to commit him under Section 302 of the mental health procedures act and that was done. He is now ineligible to possess firearms [for life] because he was committed involuntarily.'" ...

"On Tuesday, July 10, 2007 John Rosenthal, of Stop Handgun Violence and American Hunters and Shooters Association, was a guest on WRKO 680 AM "Finneran's Forum" show. Rosenthal was on the show to discuss his organization's new political billboard slamming the National Rifle Association."

"During the show a reporter, Steve Bailey of the Boston Globe, explained how he and Rosenthal had attended a gun show in New Hampshire over a year ago. The trip was supposed to prove how easy it was for criminals to buy a handgun in New Hampshire. They actually found that it was not possible to do so without violating several laws."

"... When asked by the hosts of the show if he had committed a straw purchase, Rosenthal admitted that he had indeed conducted a straw purchase to prove a point." ...

Why Aren't Criminal Background Checks Required for All Gun Sales?

"Did you know that there is no federal requirement for criminal background checks for all gun sales? As a gun owner and avid shooter, I believe in a strong second amendment. But in today's world, it's crazy to allow convicted criminals and suspected terrorists to be able to buy an unlimited number of easily concealable, high powered weapons from unlicensed arms dealers and at thousands of gun shows without even asking to see an ID or running a simple background check."

"More than 50 percent of guns sold in our country are sold by private, unlicensed arms dealers, but only federally licensed gun dealers are required to run background checks. ..." ...

"Sure, the NRA worked with its Congressional enemies to draft legislation that would close Cho loopholes -- H.R. 2640, the National Instant Criminal Background Check System Improvement Amendments Act -- which passed the House in June. But it was a con job by the NRA's own admission."

"I know many of you reading this are CCW license holders like me. If so, you probably have friends and family who think you are a little paranoid, if not crazy, for carrying a firearm. Sometimes this is out of ignorance and sometimes it is because they are hoplophobes: those souls with an irrational fear of firearms. Either way I am sure those with their license will at some point encounter these folks and have this conversation. You will find yourself up against the 'sheep mindset'. They have a blind faith that all will be well, and if it is not the police will protect them. This wall built of obtuse bricks can be rather difficult to breach. The way to go about it is logic." ...

"And they will be captured. Because they left their guns behind. ... And then, as the court system takes over, the men and women of the most successful police force on the globe will continue on patrol, facing needless, unconscionable danger because the Congress of the United States, in the grip of the National Rifle Association, refuses to enact even reasonable gun control measures or to permit enforcement of the statutes on the books. "There was an interesting criminal case in Florida that could someday have relevance to Pennsylvanians."

"It has to do with clarifying a citizen's right to use deadly force to defend himself or herself from criminals without fear of prosecution or civil lawsuits, but in effect it might just make the issue cloudier."

"The question of when a person, even an officer of the law, is legally permitted to use force to protect himself or others from harm has always been a thorny issue. It depends on circumstances and fuzzy concepts such as the degree of the response in relation to the degree of the threat, the defender's 'reasonable belief' that his life or the lives of others were in jeopardy, and things of that sort." ...
