Gone are the days of putting up with spent hulls flying in front of the face of left-handed shooters or struggling with odd palm swells and backwards controls. Though several companies offered left-handed variants for many years, they were few and far between, often requiring special order.

While this is far from a complete list, the following choices represent current-production southpaw-friendly shotguns that are readily accessible, including pumps, repeaters, single shots, and doubles.

The Walther PPK is a legendary design that paved the way for a half-century of handgun development. Like the real life and fictional heroes and villains that carried it, the PPK has become something of an archetype. It exists and has been little changed since it was introduced in 1931. But the landscape the PPK exists in did change. The end of World War II brought PPK production out of Germany for the first time. The Gun Control Act of 1968 birthed the PPK/S model.

In response to the Tops Markets massacre, New York State enacted a law banning the sale of body armor to most private citizens. This law is now being challenged by gun rights advocates who argue that it is unconstitutional. A man from Lake View, along with a Las Vegas-based gun rights organization, has filed a federal lawsuit to legalize the purchase and ownership of bulletproof vests and other body armor for private citizens in New York.

The Firearms Policy Coalition and Benjamin Heeter of Lake View claim that the state’s body armor ban infringes on the rights of law-abiding citizens who wish to protect themselves from criminals.

The two first-degree misdemeanor charges he faces are no laughing matter, either. Each count carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, meaning a conviction would also disqualify him under federal law from ever possessing firearms in the future.

But wait. Why did Yakaitis need a license to carry a firearm on his own property?

It appears that while Yakaitis owned the vacant building in which he defended himself, he didn’t actually live there. It wasn’t, strictly speaking, his “place of abode or fixed place of business,” and this left the door open for prosecutors to charge him over what amounts to little more than a technicality.

And it is little more than a technicality.

According to Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings, the businessman was participating in a Pokémon-style scavenger hunt on his phone when he was unexpectedly attacked. Piercy allegedly punched the businessman in the face and stole his phone. In response, the victim drew his firearm and fatally shot Piercy in a nearby parking lot, just a short distance from the Madison County Courthouse.

Despite the lack of a weapon on Piercy at the time of the Anderson shooting, Cummings stated that Indiana law permits individuals to use deadly force in self-defense if they reasonably believe they are at risk of serious injury or death. He emphasized that the evidence presented so far supports a strong case for self-defense.

A Bexar County jury decided Friday that a San Antonio man who shot and killed his best friend and roommate over their rent money did so in self-defense, delivering a not guilty verdict in a weeklong murder trial.

It took the panel 4½ hours to find that Quovante Yatis Walls was protecting himself and his property when he shot and killed Mario Miller, 29, on May 31, 2022. Walls cried silently after the verdict was read.

If he had been convicted, Walls, 31, could have been given a life sentence.

The individual, armed with a firearm, began threatening the staff. In response, the staff shot the intruder, who then fled and later arrived at a local hospital. The intruder is now in stable condition. Officers have contacted all parties involved, and the investigation is ongoing.

Businesses must be prepared to handle such threats, and this situation highlights the necessity of self-defense even while on the job. Knowing how to respond to an armed threat can save lives and prevent further harm.

A federal judge in Kansas has refused to block the nationwide enforcement of a Biden administration rule requiring firearms dealers to do background checks of buyers at gun shows, leaving Texas as the only state so far where a legal challenge has succeeded.

U.S. District Judge Toby Crouse’s ruling this week came in a lawsuit brought by Kansas and 19 other states, three individual gun collectors and a Wichita, Kansas-based association for collectors. They sought an order preventing the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from enforcing the rule that took effect in May through the trial of their lawsuit.

U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) recently joined his colleagues in introducing the Firearms Interstate Commerce Reform Act (FICRA), legislation that would address burdensome federal regulations on the sale or delivery of firearms between different states.

“Enabling licensed firearm dealers to sell across state lines strengthens law-abiding gun owners’ Second Amendment rights and helps promote a marketplace on which many livelihoods depend,” said Thune. “Lawful South Dakota gun owners, including members of our armed forces, should have unimpeded access to exercise their lawful right to keep and bear arms.”

New Yorkers are now far more likely to be killed in a car crash than a shooting.

City data shows 127 people were killed by drivers across the five boroughs during the first six months of 2024, about 55% more than the 82 who were fatally shot over the same period.

The stark difference comes as Mayor Eric Adams has directed the NYPD to aggressively crack down on illegal guns. Street safety advocates, meanwhile, have criticized him for not doing enough to keep people from dying in car crashes.

Gov. Chris Sununu signed 33 bills into law Friday, including one to let workers keep loaded guns in locked cars at employer parking lots (HB 1336) and to restrict the use of artificial intelligence throughout state government (HB 1688).

Sununu vetoed two bills: one that would expand the right of medical marijuana marijuana dispensaries to add a second cultivation site (HB 1581) and the other to create an environmental innovation council (SB 543).

“Tennessee judge blocks release of trans school shooter Audrey Hale’s manifesto, writings—cites copyright claims of victims’ families,” The Post Millennial reported Friday. “What has been leaked to the public shows that Hale had fantasies of killing her family and shared this information with a therapist.”

“Hale’s family claimed they assigned (parents from the Covenant School, the Covenant School, and the Covenant Presbyterian Church) the copyright of her written materials,” the report notes. And they don’t want them released.

Why? And what effect might the church’s “long history of support for gun control legislation” have to do with that decision?

Alongside produce, aspirin and breakfast cereal now sits a vending machine of sorts, but instead of Coca-Cola and candy, this machine sells live rounds.

Grant Magers, the CEO of American Rounds, says ammo is perfectly at home in this local grocer.

"Walmart sells ammo, right? So if you think about Walmart, the only difference is they have a sporting goods department. A lot of our grocery stores are kind of in rural towns where people have to drive, you know, maybe an hour to get to their nearest sporting goods store that might sell ammo," Magers said.

When the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department in California wanted to purchase new firearms, it sold its used ones to help cover the cost. The old guns went to a distributor, which then turned around and sold them to the public. One of those guns—a Glock pistol—found its way to Indianapolis.

That Glock was involved in the killing of Maria Leslie’s grandson, and the fact that it once belonged to law enforcement makes her loss sting even more.

“My grandson was in his own apartment complex. He lived there,” Leslie said. “He should not have been murdered there, especially with a gun that traces back all the way to the California police department’s coffers.”

Columbia Metropolitan Airport Police Chief Daniel Ruggiero said most of the passengers who are caught with a firearm are permit holders.

"Probably about 85% of the passengers that do get caught with a gun are concealed weapons permit holders,” Ruggiero said.

The Chief also said to make sure you look through anything you plan to carry-on.

"The first thing is to check your bag. Just look through your bags, make sure there’s nothing in there, whether it’s a gun or a knife. A lot of the college kids have the little pepper spray on a keychain and then that causes a whole thing at the checkpoint. So just be mindful of what you’re carrying,” Ruggiero said.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution... The power to impose a license tax on the exercise of these freedoms is indeed as potent as the power of censorship which this Court has repeatedly struck down... a person cannot be compelled 'to purchase, through a license fee or a license tax, the privilege freely granted by the constitution.' —MURDOCK V. PENNSYLVANIA 319 US 105 (1942)
