"The gun industry is likely to win sweeping protection against civil lawsuits in the U.S. Senate this month, reflecting a more firearm-friendly Senate after the 2004 elections, lawmakers said on Thursday."
"Last year the Republicans killed their own bill, meant to shield gunmakers, gun distributors and gun sellers against many liability suits, after gun opponents attached amendments to it, including an extension of the 1994 ban on assault rifles."
"But the November elections left a bigger Republican majority and the Senate is now a more conservative and more pro-gun rights body. Even many Democrats, particularly from rural states, back the immunity measure." ... |

... "Sometimes a strict construction of the Constitution isn't so 'narrow or carefully limited.' Take those who follow the teaching and preaching of the National Rifle Association. It contends that the Second Amendment gives it protection from those who would pass laws restricting the use of weapons ranging from pistols to bazookas and beyond."
"The amendment states that a 'well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.'"
"Now a strict interpretation of that amendment would seem to take into consideration the operative clause about the 'well regulated militia,' a condition that no longer exists. ..." ... -------

Deputies say they got a call from a man claiming he'd shot someone. When they arrived at his home, the caller was nowhere in sight.
That man, Thomas Roman is in custody. Deputies say he turned himself in and confessed to shooting Richard Ansel inside his home. Ansel went to Roman's home looking for his girlfriend, Darlene Wilson. Roman is Wilson's ex-boyfriend.
Deputies say Ansel broke into the home in the Kanapaha neighborhood. There was an altercation, and Roman shot Ansel one time with a rifle.
No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, but Roman is in jail because of a warrant out of Levy county for violation of probation. Deputies say they're looking at self defense as a possibility, but the investigation is still on-going. |
