New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, in his latest attempt to demagogue the gun-control issue, used the occasion of George Zimmerman’s acquittal to release a statement on Sunday that asserted his desire to eradicating “Stand Your Ground” laws. Critics of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, which permits citizens to use deadly force if they feel they are in physical danger, have called the laws “Shoot-First” laws. ... Significantly, Bloomberg never mentioned that Zimmerman’s defense eschewed using the “Stand Your Ground” law in its case. |

The Zimmerman trial demonstrated to us that often people are attacked suddenly and without warning. You may not be able to get to your gun ahead of time or even reach it after the attack. Zimmerman was pinned down and straddled. Immediately that should send a message to those who spend countless pixels trying to justify carrying their guns without one in the chamber. Imagine what the outcome would have been had Zimmerman been forced to rack a round into his gun before he could use it. No way to do that with someone on top of you grabbing for your gun, if his account is accurate. |

Today I sit in Florida reading comments from those is California, New York and other liberal places. They are saying that the citizens of Florida are stupid ignorant Southerners who still wear white sheets and burn crosses. Then in the next breathe they rant about how Zimmerman profiled Trayvon Martin. It appears that they do not see that they are engaging in what they accuse others of doing. Not the kind of people who usually have a high IQ. Unfortunately there are many of them in major metropolitan areas on both coasts of our country. The kind of person who feels you have no right to kill anyone for any reason and yet is OK with killing women and children in foreign countries with our drone missiles. |

The NRA is crying victory and anti-gun liberals are shaking their heads as Missouri signs a law endorsing a gun safety course for 7-year-olds. Weeks after the Show-Me state showed off its penchant for gun controversy with a movie theater's fake gun stunt during an "Iron Man 3" screening, Gov. Jay Nixon has signed a bill encouraging schools to teach first-graders the Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program. The NRA-sponsored course is not mandated but the bill nevertheless makes it one of the "stronger state-sanctioned endorsements" of the program. |

Missouri schools will be encouraged to teach first-graders a gun safety course sponsored by the National Rifle Association as a result of legislation signed Friday by Gov. Jay Nixon. The new law stops short of requiring schools to teach the Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program. But by putting it in state law, Missouri is providing one of the stronger state-sanctioned endorsements of the NRA-sponsored firearms safety course, which the group says is taught to about 1 million children annually. The legislation also requires school personnel to participate in an “active shooter and intruder” drill led by law enforcement officers. |

Like it or not, the jury got this one right.
Nobody wants to see two parents who already lost their teenage son also lose out on what they saw as justice.
As painful as it may be, though, acquitting George Zimmerman was the only verdict the jury could logically reach.
The state simply didn't prove second-degree murder. Or manslaughter.
As much as I don't like many of the choices Zimmerman made the night he killed Trayvon, the evidence presented at trial gave way to more than one reasonable doubt about Zimmerman's guilt.
The jury believed Zimmerman's claim of self-defense. |

The weapon George Zimmerman used to kill Trayvon Martin will likely be returned to him, if he requests it. Shawn Vincent, an aide to defense attorney Mark O’Mara, told NBC News on Sunday that the Keltec 9mm handgun Zimmerman used to shoot and kill Martin on Feb. 26, 2012 will be returned, but said he did not think authorities have released the weapon yet. “It’s something that will happen, but I don’t think it has happened,” Vincent said. Vincent cast doubt on reports that the weapon has already been returned to Zimmerman, who was acquitted late Saturday of second-degree murder in Martin's death by a Florida jury. “I’m not sure that’s accurate,” he said. |

The Justice Department said Sunday it would weigh whether to file federal criminal charges against George Zimmerman after his acquittal in a shooting that set off a searing national debate over racial justice and self-defense laws.
Its statement came as groups including the NAACP and the American Civil Liberties Union urged U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to open a federal civil-rights case against Mr. Zimmerman, the former neighborhood-watch captain who shot and killed Trayvon Martin. ...
The department has had an open investigation into the death of Mr. Martin since last year.
Mr. Holder plans to address the Zimmerman case Tuesday when he speaks to the NAACP in Orlando, according to an official familiar with his plans. |

A gun shop just a few blocks from the state Capitol shows the effect of recent gun control efforts in the Oregon Legislature — nothing's changed.
After a mass shooting at a crowded shopping mall in suburban Portland and a massacre three days later at an elementary school in Connecticut last December, lawmakers in Salem joined a national debate over gun laws with Democrats pitching plans to ban large-capacity ammunition magazines and some assault rifles. |

"His wife called 911 and was telling our dispatchers that he was trying to break into the residence. So as officers were in route to render aid, he made his way into the residence. She retreated into the back bedroom, and at some point fired a shot and he was killed," said Guy.
Melissa Marshall is not facing charges because the sheriff's department believes she acted out of self-defense. The District Attorney will also investigate to see if the case will go to a Grand Jury. |

The famed criminal defense lawyer who defended notorious "subway vigilante" Bernhard Goetz says George Zimmerman never should have been indicted for the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Prosecutors caved to public pressure when they indicted Zimmerman for second-degree murder, attorney Barry Slotnick tells Business Insider, referring to the public outcry after police failed to arrest the neighborhood watchman in February 2012. |

One problem with the Connecticut gun-control law that went into effect earlier this year is that it wasn’t properly enacted into law. At least, that’s the argument the National Shooting Sports Foundation makes in a suit it filed last week, which alleges that lawmakers illegally circumvented the normal legislative process in their rush to pass a bill in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting rampage. |

As of December 1, 2011, citizens throughout North Carolina had the legal right to defend themselves from a threat of violence without first being required to retreat. This was the date that North Carolina's Stand Your Ground law took effect.
Since the death of Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012 and with the ongoing criminal case of George Zimmerman in Florida, North Carolina's own self-defense laws have been questioned. Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder felony charges in the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin; he asserted that he acted in self defense and should be exempt from prosecution under Florida's Stand Your Ground Law. |
