Here is the news the mainstream media says never happens. Again this week, responsible gun owners defended themselves and the people they care about. Self-defense instructor Amanda Suffecool joined us to talk about three examples. Were these gun owners lucky..or were they prepared?

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder has signed into law legislation that lifts the state’s ban on switchblades.
The governor signed the legislation Thursday, said state Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge.
Jones introduced the bill in March and it repeals the state law that makes the selling or possession of “spring-assisted knives” a misdemeanor in the state.
“Spring-assisted knives are not defined in the law,” Jones said Friday in a statement. “The section refers to a pocket knife opened by the flick of a button, but there are now many different knives that may or may not fall into this category. Knives of this type are sold at major retailers throughout the state and are carried by many citizens.” |

Boleyn was also charged with Disorderly Conduct. He was charged due to exiting his car, challenging Gire and one other person to a physical fight, and then breaking out Gire’s car window.
This led to Boleyn being shot by Gire, while Gire was still in his vehicle.
The Marion Police Department has determined that Gire was acting in self-defense and reviewed the new Stand Your Ground law. |

House Bill 1935 was signed by Governor Greg Abbott in June, removing several types of knives and bladed weapons from the list of illegal weapons. The Texas Knife Law Reform Bill will allow people to open carry anywhere except correctional facilities, colleges, schools, bars and houses of worship.
Knives with blades over 5-1/2 inches won’t be able to be carried into businesses where alcohol comprises more than 51% of overall revenue. |

Bonds was working at the wedding reception at a Chantilly, Va., park in August 2016 when he stabbed 35-year-old Tyonne Johns, who was the caterer at the event and a friend of the bride and groom.
Prosecutors argued Bonds had been rude to wedding guests throughout the evening and ultimately lashed out violently. Bonds said Johns put her hands around his neck during the dispute over the chairs, and argued he was acting in self-defense when he pulled out his knife. |

A jury has acquitted 30-year-old Jerad Jones of 1st Degree Reckless Homicide in the shooting death of his brother-in-law, 32-year-old Justin Ogden.
The jury deliberated for an hour before reaching the decision to acquit Jones Friday night. After the verdict was handed down, Jones could be seen hugging and thanking his lawyers and others gathered in the courtroom.
During this week-long trial, lawyers from both sides laid out their case to the jury. Attorneys for Jones argued his brother in-law, Justin Ogden, had a violent and drunk history that created a hostile environment for Jones, his sister and her daughter who they say he was trying to protect. |

In the United Kingdom, police and counter-terrorism authorities like the National Police Chiefs’ Council and the London Metropolitan Police promote a different version for surviving a firearms or weapons attack at home (and recently, abroad). The last step in their “Run, Hide, Tell” directs victims to turn off their cell phones and only call the police once it’s safe to do so.
This is peculiar advice even in a jurisdiction that gives its subjects almost no legal options for arming and defending themselves (here, here, here and here). What if running or hiding aren’t safe or even available alternatives? How will a person in hiding know when it’s safe to call the police? |

As a strict constructionist, I would like to advocate for the intent of the writers of this article.
Seems to me that those who keep and bear arms ought to be enrolled in a well regulated militia, currently known as the National Guard or the military reserve. These citizens would be trained and ready should our nation require their services when we are threatened by Native Americans or forces of the British, French or Spanish governments. |

House Speaker Paul Ryan confirmed his support for Second Amendment reciprocity legislation Friday, but stopped short of any bill that exclusively gave conceal carry rights to congressmen.
Several Republican members proposed a handful of Second Amendment reciprocity bills following the shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, that resulted in the injury of Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and others.
“I support reciprocity, but I don’t know if all of our members support reciprocity. There are issues some members have on federalism grounds on that,” Ryan told The Daily Caller at his weekly press conference. |

Until last July, Euric Rutherford had never been to a protest over police shootings. He joined the crowd at the Minnesota governor's mansion on Summit Avenue the night after Philando Castile was killed.
"It's getting to the point where I'm being looked at as a violent person just because of the color of my skin," he said that night.
Rutherford carries a gun because he believes in exercising his Second Amendment right: He likes the sport of it, and he wants to be able to protect himself and his family. His wife, who is white, was originally against it.
Rutherford is 33 — the same age Castile would be now. He's black. He has young children. And he's a gun owner, with a permit to carry. |

During the 85th Legislative Session, several amended gun laws will go into effect September 1. Several local representatives coauthored or cosponsored laws that impacted license to carry fees, classroom instruction and other weapons.
One of the most significant gun laws to pass this year was Senate Bill 16, which decreased the fee residents pay for a license to carry in the state of Texas. Senator Van Taylor (R-TX) was a coauthor for the bill alongside 17 other legislators. Local House representatives Jeff Leach (R-TX) and Jodie Laubenberg (R-TX) were cosponsors.

On July 7, US District Court Judge Lee Yeakel dismissed a complaint filed by three University of Texas professors in their attempt to block “concealed carry” gun license owners from bringing their firearms onto campus and into classes -- a right not only acknowledged by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but also legislatively acknowledged last year by the Texas government.
What’s striking about this case is not merely the fact that a judge had to rule on it. It's also not just the fact that the state had to pass a law last year to acknowledge a right that's already a right, and therefore should not require statutes to “permit” it.

Others also contacted WHNT News 19 to express concern about purchasing firearms at the expo. They wanted to know if they would be breaking the law if they purchased one.
Ainsworth does not want anyone to be afraid to shop, and assured it is being done in a safe way.
"Our exhibitors are allowed to sell guns," he said. "We have an officer there. If somebody purchases a gun, they escort them out."
Still, Hopper believes this situation is confusing. He doesn't want anyone without knowledge of the law to misconstrue what it means. |

On Thursday gun control proponent Gabby Giffords praised Rep. Dan Donovan (R-NY) for introducing a bill to expand the number of people prohibited from firearm possession.
Donovan is sponsoring the gun control along with Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.).
According to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Donovan’s gun control bill “seeks to close loopholes in gun laws to prevent people convicted of domestic violence or stalking from buying firearms.” It is called the “Zero Tolerance for Domestic Abusers Act.” |

The Women’s March protest today at NRA headquarters was partially sparked by false allegations that the organization hasn’t defended Philando Castile — an African American and concealed handgun permit holder shot by Minnesota police officer Jeronimo Yanez.

Later, a plastic surgery team determined that the bullet passed through her breast tissue and then hit something unexpected: Her saline breast implant.
Did her breast implants save her life? Or, more specifically, was it possible that the implant affected the bullet trajectory or velocity in some way? That’s the question that came up for Dr. Christopher Pannucci, the University of Utah plastic and reconstructive surgeon who worked on this case, and the inspiration behind his recent paper published in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

There are numerous and controversial arguments about whether or not emergency medical technicians and paramedics should be armed. At the same time, there are arguments against providing arms to first responders.
One point that is made against arming EMTs is that it’s difficult for first responders to get in a self-defense mindset when they’re there to perform lifesaving techniques. Others argue that body armor should be regular equipment used in emergency medical services. |
