Melissa McClaskey never envisioned herself in a place like Shiloh Gun Range & 3D Archery, donning ear muffs and goggles, a pistol in hand.
She'd always distanced herself from firearms, a decision rooted in family tragedy when she was a child. Years later, her siblings own guns. So do most of her friends.
Then came the May shooting spree in west Houston, just blocks from where she works, in which the gunman and a bystander were killed and six others injured.
Then came Orlando, where a gunman armed with a Sig Sauer MCX assault rifle and pistol killed 49 people and injured 53 in a gay nightclub.
Suddenly, there seemed to be a lot of reasons – too many – for McClaskey and her wife, Krysta, to join the ranks of gun owners.

Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of the jihadist attacks in Chattanooga. Since then, there have been numerous similarly motivated attacks in the West — Paris, San Bernardino, Brussels, Orlando, Istanbul, and now Nice, France. That’s not to mention devastating Islamist violence prior to last July, or in other parts of the world — the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia. Yet Barack Obama never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. His only “inherent resolve,” to borrow a phrase, is to refuse to call Islamist terrorism what it is. In fact, Obama was celebrating Ramadan the day of the Chattanooga attack. |

Any gun is better than no gun. Such is the premise of carrying a pocket pistol. After all, if you knew you would need a gun on a given day, you’d certainly opt for one bigger than a one you can fit in your pocket.
Personally, I’d choose one with a stock and a sling, but since there’s no way of knowing if today will be the day you desperately need a firearm and rifles don’t exactly make for discreet or practical daily carry, we’re pretty much relegated to carrying handguns. |

A man suffered a gunshot wound to the chest while visiting this week at a University of Georgia student’s apartment in what police determined to be an accidental shooting.
Daniel Keith Hill, 22, of Lawrenceville reportedly was shot while he and his brother were demonstrating a self-defense technique with a .45-caliber pistol which they did not realize was loaded, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

The fact that in any attack, you will be the first responder on the scene, remains all too true as well. Unless they are on the scene as was the case in the attempted terrorist attack at a cartoon contest in Garland, Texas, the hard truth is that Policemen, firefighters, and paramedics are actually the second responders. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security have put out some information to help you survive. The time you take to review that information could save your life. |

Shooters on the firing line at the Bullet Hole range in Belleville all own their guns. No rentals allowed even though New Jersey law lets authorized shooting ranges rent firearms to any 18-year-old with a photo ID — no gun license required — for up to eight hours a day. That alarms Bullet Hole owner Manny Cerca.
“There shouldn’t be rentals to just anyone walking off the street because there’s no control over the individual that comes in there to rent a gun,” he said.

Despite the championing in Congress of gun restrictions by black legislators, many African-Americans now see gun ownership as an important civil rights cause, in the spirit of abolitionist Frederick Douglass’ comment in 1867 that a man’s rights lay in three boxes: “the ballot box, the jury box and the cartridge box.” In African-American gun groups like Smith’s, members are expressing a mix of fear and defiance over the incidents.
“We have a lot of work to do,” Smith said. “We have to buckle down and work for full Second Amendment rights for African-American men and women. We work, we pay taxes and we’re not going to take this second-class treatment anymore. But one person can’t do it. It has to be done by a community.” |

Orlando gun store owners said they've had an increase in people wanting to apply for or renew their concealed weapons permits since the Pulse massacre.
Giovany and Anna Negron are first-time gun owners in the process of getting concealed weapon permits. Though it’s not in direct response to the Pulse shootings, Negron said self-defense has been a common topic of conversation among gun owners he knows since the massacre happened.
“Get trained, get armed and be ready,” Negron told WESH 2 News before entering the shooting range at Instant Replay Gun and Pawn in Union Park. |

This weekend at the Arizona State Fairgrounds there will be a big gun show sponsored by Crossroads of the West, an operation that claims on its website to have “attracted more than half a million guests, more than any other gun show in America.”
The Crossroads website also provides a potential customer with lots of tips and information in a handy question and answer format.
It sets out some rules, offers suggestions, and makes a very strong, very logical case for ... more stringent regulations for possession and sale of firearms.
Although, I don’t believe the Crossroads people did that on purpose. |

If the point of the petition was to show the public that Republican rhetoric about more guns making us all safer is utter bullshit, then it succeeded wildly, because the contrast between what Republican policy makers say they believe and actually believe couldn’t be on brighter display.
Republican leaders know full well that a convention hall teaming with mutually antagonistic adrenalin-jacked open- and concealed-carriers could be the safety equivalent of a convention hall decorated with gas cans and matchboxes.

On behalf of our five million members across the country, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) today endorsed Marco Rubio for the office of U.S. Senate in the Florida Republican primary.
“Marco Rubio is a strong advocate for the rights of law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman, NRA-PVF. “He has fought to preserve our Second Amendment freedoms and hunting heritage, and stood strong against President Obama, Hillary Clinton and former New York City billionaire Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s extreme gun-control agenda.” |

None of that is required, however, when purchasing guns from private sellers, the Daily Beast noted. This makes a firearm easier to purchase than many things in the country including cigarettes, birth control and a number of foods.
Indeed, some foods require proof of age, are highly regulated by the American government, are only found in small quantities or require a significant amount of time and effort to acquire.
Guns, on the other hand, are abundant, NPR noted, and can be purchased in just a few minutes, as a reporter for The Star demonstrated in June. |

There is no right to keep and bear arms in Florida and I say this as a Florida resident. Recently the Florida Supreme Court heard arguments for open carry.
A number of justices were apparently skeptical of this argument, including Justices Barbara Parient and Peggy Quince, and according to one article in the sun-sentinel, Chief Justice Jorge Labarga cannot see how licensing the exercise of the Second Amendment would be the same as licensing the First, simply because firearms can kill. Far more damage can be done using exercising the First. And it has and continues to. |

Gorry presented a document from May 16 indicating his consent for voluntary inpatient treatment, Jubelirer said. He testified at the hearing that he consented to be committed for mental health treatment because he was in distress from a recent open-heart surgery. He said he stayed at the facility for 22 days and never revoked his consent to be committed, noting that he was never told there was a hearing on involuntary commitment.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been in the news for her comments regarding presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. She has drawn criticism from not only Republicans, but Democrats and even some mainstream media outlets, for what some view as a violation of judicial ethics. What you may not know is that she also revealed that she wants to see the landmark Heller decision overturned. The late Antonin Scalia wrote the opinion in the 2008 case, which tossed out Washington D.C.’s handgun ban by a 5-4 vote. |

Each new report about killings committed by a person wielding a gun brings new cries for restricting, even canceling, the right of the people to keep and bear arms. After the mass killing in Orlando, Florida, dozens of U.S. congressmen swarmed into the House chamber and staged a unique sit-in demonstration as they demanded passage of new laws. But their demands focused on making more difficult the plight of a law-abiding citizen to possess a weapon.

Within a small secure-zone perimeter at the convention site, including the convention floor, guns will be banned. Otherwise, Ohio state law allows gun owners to carry rifles, shotguns, and other long guns, including assault rifles, openly throughout the city—even within the broader security zone around the convention center, where toy guns, knives, and other items will be prohibited. In light of the police shootings of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota—one of whom was allegedly licensed to carry—and the subsequent murder of five police officers in Dallas, Cleveland Police Department Chief Calvin Williams has asked people not to bring firearms to the convention. But he has acknowledged their constitutional right to do so. |

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announced an executive order Friday, ordering Oregon State Police to maintain a database of firearms transactions for five years after the sale. She also ordered state police to notify local law enforcement agencies if a person who is prohibited from buying a gun tries to do so.
“Gun violence is terrorizing America, tearing apart the very fabric of our communities and our families,” Brown said. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
[The American Colonies were] all democratic governments, where the power is in the hands of the people and where there is not the least difficulty or jealousy about putting arms into the hands of every man in the country. [European countries should not] be ignorant of the strength and the force of such a form of government and how strenuously and almost wonderfully people living under one have sometimes exerted themselves in defence of their rights and liberties and how fatally it has ended with many a man and many a state who have entered into quarrels, wars and contests with them. — George Mason, "Remarks on Annual Elections for the Fairfax Independent Company" in The Papers of George Mason, 1725-1792, ed Robert A. Rutland (Chapel Hill, 1970). |
