... "For many Christians throughout history, the above text of Romans 13 has been used to justify inaction against the tyrannies of their day. German Lutheran pastors hid behind it in the time of the Nazis, giving sermons to their congregations that justified submission in the face of Nazi tyranny as 'obedience to the Higher Power.' Hitler was happy to let them continue preaching."
"Other Christians, however, have resisted this interpretation. In American history, Jonathan Mayhew, the man who was the first practicioner of what King George the Third would later dub 'The Black Regiment,' was one Christian who correctly interpreted Romans 13 not as an excuse for inaction but rather as part of a Christian call to arms." ... |

"Lloyd Garver writes for the Huffington Post, and commented on the Louisville, Kentucky church that had a 'Bring your gun to church' Sunday on June 27th to celebrate Independence Day and the Second Amendment. In his column of July 2nd, he raised some interesting objections that I wanted to answer. Pastor Pagano had told him many pictures from ancient, medieval, and our own revolutionary time show people attending church while obviously armed. He responded 'I reminded him that there were many things that were done hundreds of years ago that aren't done today -- like sacrificing goats, having slaves, and avoiding baths.' ..." ... |

"America's third largest party reiterated its opposition Wednesday to the Supreme Court nomination of federal judge Sonia Sotomayor after the nominee refused to give a firm answer on whether individuals have the right of self-defense."
"'Is there a constitutional right to self-defense?' Sotomayor asked when questioned by Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) whether or not the Constitution guaranteed him the right of self-defense. 'I can't think of one. I could be wrong.'"

"The National Rifle Association announced Thursday that it opposes Judge Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court."
"'We believe any individual who does not agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental right and who does not respect our God-given right of self-defense should not serve on any court, much less the highest court in the land,' said a joint statement by Wayne LaPierre, the NRA executive vice president, and Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Reform."

"From statements, rulings and writings, there is little doubt that Obama Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is an enemy of the Second Amendment. Even beyond hints of racism and liberal judicial activism, beyond numerous overturned rulings, gun owners should realize that once seated, she would have an immediate impact on the court’s interpretation of the right to keep and bear arms." ... -------

FULL TEXT BELOW:
Bob Palma's July 2 letter to the editor sadly misses the point of the June 28 report on three recent victims of domestic violence. Palma seems to imply that the victims are at fault for their own murders for not taking the time to purchase guns and learn how to use them. Guns may or may not have protected these victims of violence; however, invoking the Second Amendment only serves as a distraction from the true issue. Though some individuals may be more comfortable letting victims of domestic violence take the blame for their own abuse, it is time to face the facts and understand that the three men charged with murdering their own wives are completely culpable, not the women who suffered at their hands. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some of the worst abuses of government force in recent years were precipitated by technical and victimless gun-law violations. For example, the BATF claimed that the Branch Davidians possessed machine guns without paying the required federal tax and filling in the proper registration forms. So a tax case worth less than $10,000 led to a 76-man helicopter, machine gun, and grenade assault on a home in which 2/3 of the occupants were women and children. — Dave Kopel and Dr. Michael S.
