Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman is in a dilemma over Initiative 1639. If enacted by voters this fall, I-1639 would impose tougher background checks, firearms training requirements, and higher age limits for purchasers of assault rifles, among other provisions. Certainly the proposal to put curbs on gun ownership to improve public safety should go to voters in our state. But that isn’t the problem.

The Russian gun activist who was arrested in Washington, DC is not an agent of the Kremlin and the Department of Justice (DOJ) is misusing the law to charge her as such, the attorney for Maria Butina said. Butina, 29, was arrested on Sunday and jailed pending a hearing scheduled on Wednesday, the DOJ said in a statement on Monday. She was charged with “conspiracy to act as an agent of the Russian Federation within the United States without prior notification to the Attorney General.” Charges against Butina are “simply a misuse of the Foreign Agent statute, which is designed to punish covert propaganda, not open and public networking by foreign students," Butina’s attorney Robert Driscoll said in a statement.

Illinois police will be able to temporarily confiscate guns from individuals found by a court to present a danger to themselves or others, under a law signed Monday by Gov. Bruce Rauner. “I am a, uh, advocate for the Second Amendment, I am a gun owner and I believe this bill protects constitutional rights while increasing public safety,” Rauner said at a bill signing ceremony in Chicago. Rauner also signed a law requiring a 72-hour waiting period between the sale and delivery of all guns purchased in Illinois. |

The National Rifle Association rallied across Georgia for gubernatorial candidate Casey Cagle over the weekend, including a stop at the Governors Gun Club in Kennesaw. From publicly threatening Delta on behalf of the NRA to pointing a shotgun at a teenager in a TV ad, appearing to be the biggest defender of guns has been a priority for both Republican campaigns for governor. So much so that sometimes even some of their supporters get confused. |

The debate over waiting periods and whether they are effective might take on a new dimension in Illinois, after Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday signed a bill establishing a 72-hour wait for the purchase of all firearms, according to the State Journal-Register.
Waiting periods for buying guns are popular on the political Left. The claim is that they save lives. Studies say so. But is that accurate?

Publication of a 3,500-word report on dementia and guns “in Washington State and elsewhere” over the weekend in the Seattle Times seemed, to more than one reader, to have been curiously timed, and apparently tilted, to support a recently-submitted gun control initiative filed by a Seattle-based gun control lobbying group supported by wealthy elitists.
The story came from Kaiser Health News, and was originally published back on June 25. Why the wait to re-publish in a Seattle newspaper?

The National Rifle Association on Monday endorsed Gov. Jeff Colyer over Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who dismissed the endorsement as “incumbent protection.” Both men have sought to position themselves as steadfastly pro-gun as the August Republican primary approaches in a state that has few restraints on gun rights. “This endorsement is a reflection of your strong support for the Second Amendment and the hunting heritage of Kansas,” NRA managing director Lacey Biles said in a letter to Colyer.

Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS), has made clear in judicial writings that banning a certain “class of arms” is like banning a particular “category of speech.” He referenced these things in the dissent to Heller v. District of Columbia (2011), a suit challenging firearm regulations adopted in D.C. in the aftermath of District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). |

In late June, a gun store in Charlemont, Massachusetts, posted a letter on Facebook from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The 2011 letter notified gun dealers that just because someone has a state medical marijuana card, it doesn't mean it's legal for them to purchase a gun. Charles Ricko, who owns Overwatch Outpost Outfitters, said he decided to post the letter after hearing confusion among some gun owners.
