"As I mentioned in a previous post, USA Today asked me to write a counter-point editorial to their take on U.S. gun laws in general and the Zimmerman verdict in specific. [Click here to read paper's anti-gun agit-prop Lax gun laws vs. Trayvon Martin's life: Our view.] Know this: I didn’t get to read the full text until after it was published. Even so, I reckon my effort—Armed Zimmerman was no Dirty Harry: Opposing view—makes the case that TTAG’s Armed Intelligentsia explored in our Question of the Day. [Click here to give Gannet the page views or make the jump for the full text.] Thanks for helping me clarify my thinking. I hope I represented . . ." ... |

"It was an epiphany. I suddenly realized what is going on. The anti gun crowd, having failed to pass a single federal gun control law after surfing the wave of emotion following the Newton shooting, have found another hot button issue to accomplish their goal. All of a sudden most of the anti gun talk on the internet and media revolves around getting rid of the Stand Your Ground laws in our country. My mistake, and perhaps the same for others, is to take that at face value; an attempt to invalidate SYG laws. However there was a bazinga in there. After thinking about it, it came to me in a moment of perfect and pure thought. My god, these dolts cannot ban our self defense guns so instead they are trying to ban our use of them in self defense." ... |

"... At the risk of Rosebudding your sled, [the Aurora shooter] bought ammo from LuckyGunner. Legally. Or, as Todd C. Frankel puts it, 'The answer appeared to be an online company in St. Louis, a detail widely reported one year ago . . . The trail leads not to St. Louis but to Knoxville, Tenn., and on to Atlanta, to a secretive 4-year-old company [Lucky Gunner] considered to be among the nation’s top online ammunition dealers. Its founders — a pair of former real estate developers — sell bullets using far-flung P.O. boxes, different corporate identities . . . By last summer, these entrepreneurs stood perfectly positioned to close on a quick, legal sale to a deranged killer.' Wait. What? It gets worse . . ." ... |

"I just read an editorial by yet another mother that compared self defense with a gun to Barney Fife. She carefully showed how Deputy Barney kept his gun empty and only loaded it when he needed to control someone, not shoot them. The editorial went on to explain that when real trouble was expected, Andy, the Sheriff of Mayberry, would take his rifle to take care of things. This editorial highlighted the fact that many moms and men of the delicate persuasion, have a shoot to wound mentality and what is worse, a never shoot an unarmed man viewpoint. ..." ... |

"Ever since the Dark Days of December, 2012, 5.56mm ammo has been scarce as as TTAG post without a link to an Israeli supermodel. Through this past winter and spring, shoppers would arrive hours before opening to wait in at local sporting goods stores on the rumor that a few cases of 5.56 might briefly hit the shelves. They rarely did. But that’s all ending. Five weeks ago a thousand rounds of steel 5.56 cost $480 plus shipping, and now it’s $400. If you can stand to do business with CTD, they’re advertising the same ammo for $360 . . ." ... |

"When people hold events they call 'gun violence forums,' why does it always seem the proposals that result focus solely on the 'gun' part of the equation and not the 'violence'? Probably because they see it as easier to restrict gun ownership than to actually deal with the issue of violence in our society. So it’s really no surprise that the recent, ahem, gun violence forum that resulted from the Santa Monica shooting earlier this year has resulted in California congressman Henry Waxman proposing legislation to make it illegal to sell gun 'kits' on the internet . . ." ... |

"For all the anti-gun outrage about George Zimmerman supposedly having racially 'profiled' Trayvon Martin (an accusation that an FBI investigation has not found credible), gun prohibitionists certainly do a great deal of profiling of their own. This column recently compared the unsupported allegations of Zimmerman's notional profiling to New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg's recent contention that the NYPD's grotesquely discriminatory 'stop-and-frisk' policies (with a more than ten to one ratio of African-Americans and Hispanics to whites) is not discriminatory enough."

... "Supporters of the bill said the sheriffs were attempting to make an issue out of something that wasn’t there and that it was never the intention of democrats to prosecute someone for loaning their magazine to someone. However, the problem is the law is not what a person intends, but what it states."
"Recently Colorado Attorney General John Suthers has said he will rewrite technical guidelines indicating how law enforcement should enforce the provisions. The announcement by Suther’s is a tacit admission that the sheriffs are correct in the clear wording of the bill."
"However, Weld County Sheriff John Cooke pointed out that while the guidelines are a positive step, ultimately they do not have the force of law." ... |

With all of the talk about “Stand Your Ground” laws and self-defense in the “media” lately, I thought that it would be a good idea to take a look at which U.S. states have those laws in place and the definition of what the law is, without all of the media hype. |

"Welcome home, veterans; if you can't manage your checkbook, hand over your firearms! The Veterans Administration is notifying some veterans that evidence indicates that they may be 'incompetent' to handle 'benefit payments,' and that such an eventual determination would place them on the [NICS] list and prohibit them from 'purchasing, possessing, receiving, or transporting a firearm or ammunition.' To add further insult to injury, 99.3 percent of all names on the NICBC list are from the VA – clear evidence that the federal government is disproportionately targeting our nation's veteran population. Oh, the irony – our military heroes, who are trained to use firearms, are at risk of losing their right to keep and bear arms." ... |

Here’s a little statistic worth considering: In Connecticut, with some of the strictest gun laws in the nation, you can legally obtain a gun in half the time it takes for a veteran to get his or her disability claim approved."
"That’s right. Our police and court reporter John Barry was able to obtain a gun permit in 108 days, and in less than four months after filing his application, actually bought a gun. Some consider that 'too long.'"
"Yet on average, its takes 200 days for a Connecticut veteran to get a disability claim approved by the Veterans Administration — and that’s six[sic] months faster than the national average of 286 days." ... |
