Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush says a ban on carrying guns in military recruiting offices should be lifted.

He made the comments Friday during a town hall-style event in Carson City, Nevada, a day after a gunman killed four Marines and wounded a sailor and another Marine at a pair of military facilities in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His statement drew enthusiastic applause from the crowd.

A wannabe jihadi?

That's how Jeff Edwards, one of scores of veterans who wrote or texted us after the attack that killed four US Marines in Chattanooga, characterized the gunman. The suspect, who was slain by police, has been identified as Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. The FBI says it’s premature to speculate about motive, but they are investigating the possibility of terrorism.

Other vets suggested tolerance, and one said the best response would be to go out and befriend a Muslim.

Paul Fanlund’s column on gun control omits the best opinion for dealing with handguns: Ban them. Except for police and foresters, they are useless, unnecessary and dangerous. After coming to this conclusion myself, I did a little research and found a book that agrees with that position. “Every Handgun Is Pointed at You,” by Josh Sugarmann, executive director of The Violence Policy Institute, published in 2001.

U.S. Rep. John Carter, R-Round Rock, says shootings at military installations such as the one Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn., that left four Marines dead could be prevented if troops were allowed to carry concealed weapons.

“There have been far too many incidences where we have had to mourn the loss of a soldier or civilian due to shootings on military bases. These events could have been prevented,” he said.

"In May, an amendment I proposed passed the House and was included within the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to allow service members to conceal carry on military installations,” he said.

Judicial activism is alive and flourishing on the Florida Supreme Court, and the victim of this activism is the Second Amendment and our fundamental right of self-defense.

On Thursday, July 9, 2015, liberals on the Florida Supreme Court issued an opinion in a self-defense case that clearly has a chilling effect on the constitutional right of self-defense and the immunity from prosecution for exercising self-defense provided by the Legislature in the “Castle Doctrine/Stand Your Ground” law.

The presumption of innocence until proven guilty has been turned on its head. Rather than follow the intent of the Legislature, the Court chose to rewrite the law to achieve its own policy goals.

The Tennessee Firearms Association is calling upon Tennessee's General Assembly and the Governor to take immediate action to eliminate "gun free zones" in Tennessee.

A deadly terrorist attack in Chattanooga resulted in the murder of 4 Marines occurred in a government created "gun free zone." The evidence is clear that multiple victim shootings, like those occurring in Chattanooga and also at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, predominately occur in these government imposed "gun free zones."

But some legal experts have questioned whether or not such prohibitions could withstand a challenge under the Second Amendment.

In 2012, former U.S. District Court clerk Dan Terzian argued in the Penn State Law Review that “there is no legal impediment — nor should there be — to [robotic weapons] becoming arms.”

This session from the Aspen Ideas Festival features two lawyers with opposing views on the Second Amendment and what gun regulations are constitutional. They also delve into the implications of the 2008 Supreme Court decision recognizing the individual right to own a gun.

Alan Gura successfully argued that case. District of Columbia vs Heller confirmed the Second Amendment secures individual rights to gun ownership. Another case Gura won was McDonald vs City of Chicago, which requires state and local governments to respect the right to own arms.

A day after another shooting at a domestic military facility, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee spoke out against policies preventing soldiers from carry weapons at American military bases.

“The military, who are the best trained, best prepared people at handling weapons, should be allowed to have their weapons at military facilities,” Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and GOP presidential hopeful, told reporters at a campaign stop in Iowa City. “The policy adopted back in 1993 has proven to not be just foolish, but fatal. Not just in this instance but in Little Rock and in Fort Hood.”

An Ann Arbor resident is suing the University of Michigan after being denied a permit to open carry a gun on campus.

Joshua Wade charges in the lawsuit that the university is in violation of the state and U.S. Constitution by banning him and others from being allowed to open carry on the Ann Arbor campus.

Wade filed the lawsuit in the state’s Court of Claims in June.

"Mr. Wade lives and works in Ann Arbor and is often near the U-M campus," his attorney, Steven Dulan, told the Free Press. "He wants to make it clear that U-M ... must comply with state law."

A confusing question and conflict between state and federal law remains an unresolved issue on applications to buy a gun since marijuana became legalized in Alaska.

Form 4473 from the U.S. Dept. Justice Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives asks potential buyers to indicate whether or not they are an "unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance."

Rand Paul predicted his brand of fiscal conservatism would give him the edge in the Republican fight for his home state of Texas, where the junior senator from Kentucky returned Friday for the first time since announcing his presidential bid.

Paul's libertarian grab-bag speech before a few hundred mostly young attendees at a downtown Houston rally touched on a wide range of issues, from responsible spending to privacy, criminal justice reform to lower taxes.

If the significant increase in federal background checks for gun sales last month was any indication of an increase in gun sales, then some local gun shop workers say they didn’t experience that trend.

But the workers said they are noticing an increase in foot traffic from existing gun owners who either want to know more about Alabama’s newest gun laws or about any potential changes to federal gun regulations that could come after the next presidential election.

If anyone should carry a weapon, it should be a Marine at his post

A Marine on the wall of an embassy or on the deck of a navy ship can be trusted to carry a weapon to defend his fellow Marines, other servicemen, U.S. citizens or U.S. property. A Marine flying an F-18 is trusted with enough weaponry to destroy several ships or a small city. But, in our modern society, one question remains: Why is it that a Marine at his post in a federal installation like a Marine reserve center cannot carry a rifle or handgun? He cannot even carry his own personal handgun, even if he has a permit to carry.

A Lexington County man is challenging the City of Columbia in court over a temporary ban on weapons near the South Carolina State House.

The 30-day ban, enacted by a July 9 City Council vote just before the removal of the Confederate flag from the Capitol grounds, forbids weapons within 250 feet of State House grounds.

Columbia attorney Mark Schnee filed the lawsuit Thursday on behalf of his client, Walid Hakim. Hakim, in an affidavit submitted with the suit, said he is a concealed weapons permit holder and that his life could be endangered if he is not allowed to defend himself near the grounds because of the ban.

The North Carolina House and Senate remain at an impasse on passing a new budget, which means it is unclear how much longer they will be in session this year.

That also means it is unclear how much time is left for the Senate to take action on House Bill 562. As previously reported, this omnibus pro-gun bill contains multiple reforms that advance Second Amendment rights, including:

The State of California’s ban on handgun-related speech by licensed gun dealers likely violates their First Amendment speech rights, held a federal judge in Sacramento earlier this morning. The order, issued by District Court Judge Troy L. Nunley, found that the ban is probably unconstitutional, likely doesn’t materially reduce crime, and likely irreparably harms plaintiffs’ First Amendment right to express themselves the way they wish to. Nonetheless, the judge allowed the restriction to temporarily stand, while the case progresses further.

Now you see why the Everytown posse has to put out a “study” showing that guns don’t make people safer. Because people’s action speak louder than gun-grabber propaganda.

According to the study, concealed-carry permits have risen by 156% among men and a whopping 270% for women. Lott also revealed that minority groups are acquiring concealed-carry permits faster than whites.

“Over the last couple of years, there has been a massive sea change among blacks’ views towards guns,” Lott said.

Joyce Povolny wrote a letter to the editor to demand stricter federal gun laws. She displayed a remarkable ignorance of the laws as they now stand.

The Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms. The recent Supreme Court’s Heller decision confirmed this as an individual right, and the subsequent McDonald decision extended the right to the states. This is now settled law.
