People who wonder why it’s nearly impossible to have a “reasonable conversation” on guns and gun control need look no further than Brent Larkin, retired editorial director for Cleveland’s Plain Dealer and frequent columnist at Cleveland.com. In a completely unhinged rant posted last week, Larkin declared that pro-gun state legislators have a “17th-century mindset” because they favor loosening regulations on concealed carry—a trend, by the way, that is sweeping the nation.

Legal gun ownership is heavily regulated in the United States. Protecting our rights is not necessary when we agree. It becomes essential to protect a minority view, and gun owners are a minority here in the US. Pew research conducted a series of interviews last month. They released reports on the opinions of gun owners and non-gun owners. Here are where gun owners and non-owners disagree based on recent polling data.

The poll gives us public opinion. We may argue that the opinion is uninformed, but that is a separate discussion. It shows us the clear differences between the gun culture and opinions held by the majority.

A Facebook post from some hyped-up gun group says I should show my patriotism by exercising my God-given right to carry a weapon. Why in heaven's name should I carry a gun? If someone came up to me in Walmart and shoved a Glock whatever in my ribs, a gun in my purse would do me no good whatsoever because I'd never be able to rummage through everything and get it out before he knocked my block off.

I was seated in the Eykamp farm kitchen in NSW, Australia when Donald Eykamp stormed in and shoved a paper in my face.

“Look at this!” He exclaimed. “That is a Dakota rifle! One of the most expensive production rifles in the world! They cost $5,000 each. Look at the ebony fore end, the wrap around checkering, the grip cap, the classic peep sight, the short fore end, the inside the trigger guard magazine release, the Model 70 end of the receiver! Not one of these rifles have ever been used in a crime!”

Fear is among the most powerful of human motivations. That's true whether the fear is based on rational grounds, or irrational considerations — i.e., paranoia. Both evoke strong emotional responses.

When the threat is to the safety of the most precious persons in our lives — our children — emotions are magnified. On top of that, intense media coverage can't but help make a horrific event, like the mass school shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary or Columbine High School, seem like an imminent threat. But the only way we know to separate fear from paranoia is through facts and knowledge.
