Another city in western Washington appears to be preparing to test how far it can get against the state’s 35-year-old preemption statute, and gun rights advocates in any state with a similar law should pay attention to what is happening in the Evergreen State.
As Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) put it last week, what is now happening in Washington could be coming to your state. |

Recently, a group of us were discussing the fact that small handguns are easy to conceal, but difficult to shoot accurately, while big handguns are easier to shoot accurately, but more difficult to conceal. One of the fellows made the comment that, since the average gunfight took place at 7 yards, he would continue to carry his small defensive handgun. The thing I wanted to know is, exactly how do you go about scheduling an average gunfight? And, while we’re at it, how do I go about possibly scheduling my “average” gunfight with a crook who is a really poor shot? |

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on a consequential decision regarding the application of the Second Amendment in 2008. The ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller held that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual’s right to possess a firearm, unconnected with service in a militia. Dick Heller, a plaintiff in the landmark court case, sat down with The Daily Caller News Foundation in honor of the 10-year anniversary of the decision that permanently altered the debate over the right to keep and bear arms. |

Assault weapons registered in California have increased by 43% under a new law that expanded the types of firearms gun owners must log with the state. Californians have applied to register 68,848 additional assault weapons in the last 11 months to comply with a state law enacted following the 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino. The 2016 law bans sales of semi-automatic assault rifles equipped with “bullet buttons,” which have detachable magazines that enable quick replacement of ammunition, and requires old ones to be registered with the California Department of Justice by the end of June. The mandate should allow law enforcement to better track the weapons. |

The San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO) is putting up money to prove that gun sales at shows are in full compliance with federal and state regulations. Though it’s working with one set of gun shows in particular, Crossroads of the West events at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the point might well be made to disprove the gun control crowd’s assertion that transactions at gun shows are done off the record and therefore open the door for someone with a criminal background to buy guns. |

Several years back, when I worked at NRA Headquarters, Federal Premium Ammunition brought some of its new 12-gauge tactical buckshot and slug ammo for us to test on the range. So, a pile of editors headed to the range with a couple cases of the stuff. Our firearms inventory manager at the time thought we’d want a tactical-style shotgun to test this tactical ammo, so he brought down a Remington 870 with an AR-15-style buttstock—you know, the one with the metal tube for a comb and a thin sheet of hard plastic for a buttpad. In an effort to test the accuracy of the new loads, we shot from a benchrest. Big mistake. |

I started shooting practical pistol about 10 years ago, concentrating on competing in the Production Division of the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA). My interest in USPSA wasn’t to become a Grandmaster in my middle age, rather, I got into the shooting sports because they looked like fun and seemed like a good way to integrate an element of shooting under stressful conditions, so I could see how I might perform in the very, very stressful situation of having to defend a life with my pistol. |
