Police have recovered more than 10 handguns and rifles believed to have been stolen from a pair of gun stores in Sparta and Kentwood.
Three juveniles and an adult suspected of breaking into the gun shops in the early hours of Sunday, July 14 have been arrested. The adult is expected to be arraigned on federal charges soon, according to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office.
Police declined to provide the number of firearms that remained unaccounted for as of Wednesday, July 17, but said they have recovered “a majority” of the stolen guns but there are "still some outstanding.”
Officers were dispatched at 3:33 a.m. Sunday to a report of a break-in at Imperial Gunworx at 134 E. Division St. NW in the village of Sparta. |

The San Diego City Council voted 6-2 on Monday in the first of two votes to approve a new gun storage ordinance aimed at preventing accidental shootings and other firearm-related injuries and deaths.
The vote came after about 90 minutes of public comment, with about two-thirds of those who spoke urging the council to pass the ordinance. Councilmen Chris Cate and Scott Sherman voted against the proposed law, to the loud approval of gun-rights activists and others who had opposed the new regulations. Councilman Mark Kersey was absent. |

The filing is the latest in a case expected to clarify a broadly expanded self-defense law under which a judge dismissed the case against Jason John, the Casper man who last summer from inside his trailer shot and killed another man. The law, passed by state legislators in 2018, promised increase legal protections for people acting in self-defense with inclusions of provisions frequently referred to as a “stand your ground” law and the “castle doctrine.” |

Walters’ defense never disputed the fact that Walters shot Griffin, but attorney Cynthia Stevens Kent argued he pulled the trigger in self-defense.
“This is why we have juries,” defense attorney Brett Harrison said. “This is why we have jury trials. They were the conscious of the community. They listened to all of the evidence and they returned what we believe to be the proper verdict.” |

In the aftermath of last year’s horrific school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 innocent students and staff were brutally murdered, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Commission conducted a thorough investigation and put forward a number of important recommendations. Among them was to recommend the state Legislature allow teachers to carry concealed guns on campus to stop future shootings. The commission made clear that it’s often not enough to just have one or two police officers or armed guards on campus. |

I am not going to concern myself with the pragmatic implications of gun regulation given that there are so many weapons in circulation in the US at the present time. Nor am I going to talk about the data concerning gun violence. I will briefly mention that this should include accidental injuries and death, as well as suicide. The only other two things I will mention before my main piece are the banning of CDC research as a result of the Dickey Amendment back in 1996, and lobbying. |

However, there is evidence that states that have stronger gun laws and fewer guns have fewer gun deaths. I do not believe it’s a coincidence the RI has some of the strongest gun laws in the country and we were ranked 49th for gun related deaths in USA Today in 2018. The state laws that are passed have gone through proper legislative channels, often over the course of years and with much vetting and revision to ensure that they are constitutionally sound. |

Yahoo! News reported that Pratt, The Jurassic World and Guardians of The Galaxy star is “facing criticism” over wearing a T-shirt with the “controversial symbol,” because it “has been adopted by Far Right political groups like the Tea Party, as well as gun-toting supporters of the Second Amendment.”
First of all, the Tea Party? Really? A bunch of old fiscal conservatives who got together in 2009 to combat Obama’s over-indulgent government spending is now in the same league as the anti-semitic, racist torchbearers of Charlottesville, VA, or the New Zealand shooter? They brought their own garbage bags to rallies, for goodness sake. |

Under the leadership of Council President David Gosselin Jr (Ward 2 Democrat), the West Warwick Town Council unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Two very similar resolutions were before the Council. One declared the Town of West Warwick a Second Amendment Sanctuary Town, but too many people had issues with the use of that word, which more commonly refers to people, not objects, like guns. The resolution passed is a simple statement in support of the Second Amendment. |
