CA: Our Voice: Congress: Renew assault weapons ban legislation without delay

"A tidal wave of assault weapons will soon legally flood the country unless Congress acts quickly to renew expiring federal legislation."

"Just what we don’t need -- more opportunities for deadlier weapons to fall into the hands of criminals -- and more 'play toys' to attract our children’s attention."

"But that’s the harsh reality if Congress doesn’t stop playing chicken on this issue. Republican or Democrat -- someone needs to take the lead on this legislation for the good of the country -- and not worry about losing votes from the National Rifle Association and other interested parties." ...

"Here are a few startling facts that will result if this legislation is allowed to expire:"

"Eighteen-year-olds will be able to walk into gun stores and buy new American-made AK-47s." [And buying American is somehow bad?]

"In many states, it will be possible to bring concealed TEC-9 assault pistols, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, into bars, churches and sports arenas, public schools or universities." [Only the states where it is currently legal to do so.]

"New rapid-fire ammunition magazines that allow guns to fire up to 100 rounds without reloading will be mass-produced and will be widely available." [Ummm, what is a "rapid-fire" magazine? And 100 rounds is about 5 pounds. Ever try to conceal a gun with 5 pounds of ammo in it?]

"Brand new assault weapons will be available -- even to terrorists -- without background checks, at gun shows in most states." [No, because "brand new" guns are only sold by FFL dealers, and all the laws that apply outside a gun show apply inside too.] ...

"As we Americans concern ourselves with the major political issues that have become prominent over the last year — namely gay marriage, abortion and the war on terrorism — there is another issue which has been flying under the radar."

"The 1994 ban on assault weapons will expire in September, and it will again become legal to purchase the dangerous, rapid-fire guns most commonly seen in action movies. It is imperative that Americans ask Congress to renew this ban, keeping assault rifles out of American gun stores."

"For that matter, it wouldn’t hurt to ban handguns as well. Both of these types of weapons are not used for hunting and have no purpose in America but to commit violent crimes." ...

Managers not prepared for workplace violence

"In an average week in U.S. workplaces, one employee is killed and at least 25 are seriously injured in violent assaults by current or former co-workers."

Many of those attacks might have been prevented.

"In nearly eight of 10 cases, killers left behind clear warning signs — sometimes showing guns to co-workers, threatening their bosses or talking about attacking. But in the majority of cases, employers ignored, downplayed or misjudged the threat, according to a USA TODAY analysis of 224 instances of fatal workplace violence."

"Less than 20% of the companies targeted in such attacks beefed up security or took other internal prevention steps. It is not known how many called police before the attacks took place." ...

And the vast majority of companies require, enforced by threat of termination, that their employees be disarmed.

Kerry's Looming Gun Battle -- The senator shows off his shotgun in the search for NRA votes

"Campaigning in Wisconsin over the Fourth of July holiday, John Kerry stopped by the Gunslick Trap Club in Holmen, snapped up a Beretta 12-gauge shotgun and coolly dispatched 17 of 25 clay pigeons. "I'm just doing what I normally do," Kerry told reporters. But Kerry supporters see their candidate's hunting skills as a shield against the National Rifle Association, which in 2000 gave the Bush campaign nearly $92,000 and spent more than $2 million helping the G.O.P. ticket attack Al Gore. Of late, the N.R.A. has been uncharacteristically quiet. The lobby has given the Bush ticket just $1,250 this year and spent nothing at all on supportive issue ads, according to the Center for Responsive Politics and FEC records." ...

FL: Florida Citizens to Help Catch Terrorists

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Law enforcement officials in central Florida are planning to train cable repairmen, exterminators and apartment managers to report signs of terrorism inside their clients’ homes.

Supporters of the program say making private citizens the eyes and ears of the police will save lives.

But opponents, like the ACLU, call the plan “un-American” and say it’s a violation of privacy.

Operation TIPS (search), a similar program proposed by President Bush, was withdrawn in 2002 after critics said it would lead to racial profiling.

So far, 5,000 brochures detailing the Florida plan have been printed, and volunteers will be trained what to look for.

But Orange County officials stress that people who go through the training will be encouraged to only report what they see — not search for evidence.

Yet President Bush has still not made any effort to stop the 10-year-old federal ban on assault weapons from expiring on Sept. 13."

"On Sept. 16, 1991, George Hennard drove his pickup truck through a cafeteria's plate glass window in Killeen, Texas, took out a Glock 9-milimeter semiautomatic pistol and a Ruger P89, and methodically shot 22 people to death before shooting himself in the head."

"The next day, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to reject a ban on semiautomatic weapons. 'Obviously,' the first President Bush said at the time, 'when you see someone go berserk and get a weapon and go in and murder people, of course, it troubles me. "My position and my record stands in stark contrast to my opponent's record of voting against the rights of law abiding gun owners."

"Listen, as a sportsman, I understand that gun ownership carries serious responsibilities. When someone uses a gun to commit a crime, they should be prosecuted and sent to jail. Over the past three years, federal prosecutions of crime committed with firearms have increased by 68 percent. The way to make our communities safer is to lock up more gun-toting criminals, not to restrict the constitutional liberties of law abiding citizens."

"Section 17 is short and to the point: 'No law shall embrace more than one subject, which shall be expressed in its title.'"

The intent of this provision is to assure an open and fair lawmaking process. When unrelated items are lumped together in one bill, it denies the opportunity for a thorough airing and discussion of the issues. This approach to legislating diminishes lawmaker accountability." ...

The Star Tribune stated in its July 15 editorial, "We still believe that increased accessibility to guns is not the answer to either personal protection or reducing crime. Nor is adding more guns to a nation already overrun with firearms."

This is classic liberal hooey, and as always, you offer no solution to the problem. What would you like us to do?

Every tree-hugging Wellstone lover hates guns, but has no idea how to take them out of the hands of the people committing crimes. So, instead, you try to limit responsible hunters, sportsmen and legal permit holders from carrying or owning a gun. Go after the slugs using the guns to commit crimes, not me.

... "While video surveillance has become a common tool for police and private security personnel, Boston police and federal officials concede that the additional cameras and new technology represent another chapter in Boston. And it's here to stay: Boston police say the 30 or so cameras installed for the convention will be used throughout the city once the event is over."

"A federal prison guard, charged with the kidnapping, rape and attempted murder of an 18-year-old woman, has lost his job at the Federal Correctional Institution in Sheridan, according to an FCI spokesman."

"Robert James Stamper Jr.'s termination Friday came only after he was sentenced to 14 months in prison Thursday in a separate case in which he pleaded guilty to choking and beating his girlfriend. "When I saw John Kerry's picture in the Courier in a hunting outfit with a shotgun in his hands, I had a big laugh. How in the world is a guy like that a hunter and a sportsman."

"Since being a senator he had voted against the second amendment 51 times he always votes for more gun laws along with Ted Kennedy, Hillary, Schumer, and that bunch, they are always trying to pass more gun laws through the senate, he knows there are a lot of gun owners and IRA members in this area."

"Such agreements are now in effect with Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Washington and Wyoming."

"The agreements came about in part because Ohio's attorney general has the authority to make such pacts under the Ohio Revised Code." ...

"Rick Kaleda, Mahoning County Coordinator for Ohioans for Concealed Carry, said the agreements are a step in the right direction for the state and for those who support the CCW law." ...

"As the sun set on June 24, something snapped in Kris J. Lieberman, an unemployed landscaper who lived a few miles from this quiet town. For 45 minutes, he crawled deliriously around a pasture here, moaning and pounding his head against the weedy ground."

"Eventually the police arrived, carrying a Taser M26, an electric gun increasingly popular with law enforcement officers nationwide. The gun fires electrified barbs up to 21 feet, hitting suspects with a disabling charge."

"The officers told Mr. Lieberman, 32, to calm down. He lunged at them instead. They fired their Taser twice. He fought briefly, collapsed and died." ...

"...As many as 20 million firearms are in circulation in this nation of 180 million people, who suffer from one of the highest rates of gun deaths in the world."

"Now, officials hope to stem that tide with an ambitious plan to disarm the populace. Under a new law hailed by supporters as the most sweeping gun-control measure in South America, only Brazilians with valid reasons — police and security guards, for example — are allowed to carry firearms in public. Ordinary citizens who own guns must either register their weapons, turn them in or face jail time."

"Proponents of the law, which took effect this month, see it as a badly needed step toward ridding this country of weapons too easily acquired and too often used to kill. Critics call it a misguided attempt that will do little to take guns out of the hands of drug dealers and other violent criminals who build their private arsenals through a flourishing illegal arms trade." ...

"You could easily. A 'no,' and it's done, quick as that."

"This question wasn't as complex as the mystery of life or the rules surrounding the creation of it, though those inquiries also turn the blood to antifreeze."

"The question was about guns, and reasonable enough."

"A North Carolina mother and her teenage son, who was shot in the leg with a rifle that they contend was defective, have filed a federal lawsuit against three businesses, including the DuPont Co."

"Tammy and Andrew May ... also have sued Remington Arms Co. and Sporting Goods Properties, which the lawsuit said is operated by DuPont."

"The lawsuit centers on a Remington Model 700 bolt-action rifle manufactured in December 1994. The Mays contend it unexpectedly fired a bullet into Andrew's leg when he removed it from a truck after a day of hunting with his uncle."

"'The firearm actually discharges when you engage or disengage the safety,' said Wilmington attorney William W. Erhart, who represents the Mays." ...
-------

From the Remington Model 700 Owner's Manual:
"A superbly crafted gun is only as good as the hands that hold it. You can never be too careful. Shooting accidents are often caused by careless oversights such as failing to control the direction of the muzzle, failing to fully engage the safety, leaving ammunition in the chamber or using improper loads. These oversights can result in the destruction of life, limb or property. There’s no calling back a bullet once it’s been fired, so it’s critical that you know the principles of safe gun handling and storage before you ever take your new Remington firearm out of the box."

"But the number of black bear sightings has lately increased to the point where what was once a wildlife novelty has become a common and oftentimes destructive nuisance in town, according to Cambo."

"Many of the bear sighting calls Cambo now receives come from frenzied residents near Pinnacle Mountain or Metacomet Road, asking him to drive out to their property with his rifle and stop the bear from rummaging through their trash cans or crushing their bird feeder, he said." [emphasis added]

"'I’m getting calls on the average of once a week,' Cambo said. 'We’re starting to get overrun.'"

"Is it important to clean your guns? Why? How clean is clean?"

"I have asked, and been asked these questions for decades."

"I am not a gunsmith, but I do have a general knowledge of what makes a gun tick - and what makes it stop ticking. When I wore the uniform of the United States Military, I was taught that my weapon (we never called them guns; there was a punishment for that slip of the tongue) was my best friend. Take care of it, and it will take care of you." ...

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Nations and peoples who forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms. — Robert Heinlein
