"David Yassky is about to receive the endorsement this afternoon of Thelma Davis, mother of slain Council Member James E. Davis, and another Brooklyn mother who lost a child to gun violence."

"The endorsement is meant to underline Yassky's expertise in gun control, including his role in writing and passing the Brady Bill and Assault Weapons Ban as a congressional aide to then-Congressman Chuck Schumer."

"While all of the candidates in the 11th are in favor of gun control, this is an area where Yassky's government experience seems to give him an advantage. It will be interesting to see whether something like this can get as much coverage as the racial narrative that everyone, including us, has been focusing on."

"The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court recently ruled that gun owners may be negligent for shootings with their stolen firearms in specific situations, if they fail to properly lock up the weapons when they know someone with a history of violence has access to them."

"The state's high court, however, rejected broader firearm liability claims, dismissing the argument that gun owners should be held responsible for harm done with their weapons in all theft cases."

"The 28-page ruling arose from the 1999 fatal shooting of a Westminster police officer by a man with a history of assaults and mental illness who stole a .357 Magnum handgun from his father's poorly locked gun case."

"The mayor of Washington D.C. has declared another crime emergency in his city. In Washington D.C., private ownership of handguns is prohibited which means that only the police and violent criminals have guns. ..."

"The New York state Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics has ruled that it is permissible for judges to pack a pistol beneath their robes while on the bench. Of course, it is extremely difficult for the average American to lawfully own a firearm in New York City, regardless of where it was purchased. And don't even think about bringing your gun into a courtroom!"

"An off-duty Chicago officer opened fire on two men who tried to mug him early Sunday morning. Thankfully, the police officer was not injured, the crime was foiled, and the suspects have been arrested. Had this crime been attempted on an ordinary citizen in anti-gun Chicago, however, the outcome would have been much different."

"These are just a few of the many examples of how gun control discriminates against ordinary citizens but allows exceptions for certain members of the government."

"Some years ago, I was genuinely shocked when a young man, age 27, told me he had never even touched a firearm. To me, a Southerner, it seemed unimaginable that any male could attain the age of 27 without ever having handled a gun."

"...In today's America, where there is no draft, most young men and women don't have any military experience. In the days of the draft, even draftees from big cities with gun-control laws like New York had been exposed to firearms."

"Furthermore, most Americans today grow up in urban areas where there is scant opportunity for recreational use of firearms. This absence of contact with firearms shows up as a sort of generic ignorance that one sees frequently in journalism and politics."

"Thanks largely to the popular Ladies Night promotion, women now represent about a quarter of the Firing Line's business, says owner Jim McLoud -- a veritable coup for the testosterone-driven gun range, where the only woman on a staff of six full-time and five part-time employees is a back-office accountant."

"Frankly, we must admit to a little unease about a ruling from the New York state Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics."

"The committee has decided that it is permissible for judges to pack a pistol beneath their robes while on the bench." ...

"Thankfully, although the committee ruled in favor of pistol-packing jurists, it warned that judges must 'be patient, dignified and courteous' to those appearing before the bench and behave in "a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary."

"As it stands now, judges would have to comply with all existing gun laws, before bringing a firearm into their courtrooms."

"After deliberating for less than five hours, a jury today found a U.S. deputy marshal guilty of voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his wife July 4, 2005, and it will return to court tomorrow to recommend a sentence."

"John Ludwig, 52, of Ashburn, was charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony for fatally shooting his wife Karen Ludwig, 38, in the couple’s bedroom. The voluntary manslaughter charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison, so the maximum sentence Ludwig can get is 13 years in prison."

"Police fired 616 shots last year, an astounding 75 percent more than the 352 in 2004 and the highest number in any year since 1999."

"They were also involved in 16 gunfights last year, up from 11 in 2004. No surprise there, as the city had more overall gun violence last year than the year before, with increases both in the number of shooting incidents and shooting victims."

"But here's what is troubling. In those gunfights with suspects, police fired 276 times - they did so just 92 times in 2004's gunfights - while the bad guys shot back at police just 72 times. The worst cop imaginable has more restraint than the average gunman, so this is clearly a red flag."

"As Lincoln city leaders wrestle with a proposed ban on concealed handguns, the Omaha City Council appears poised to repeal that city’s ban."

"Five of the seven Omaha council members have indicated they will back the repeal at Tuesday’s council meeting. That’s enough to overturn the expected veto from Mayor Mike Fahey."

"If the ban is overturned, people with permits will be able to legally carry concealed handguns in Omaha when a new state law allowing concealed handguns takes effect in January."

KABA Note: And it will surely be just as successful as it was in Richmond.

"No bill has ever been written that was too ridiculous to support or pass into law. That's politics."

"But the House of Representatives has elevated that practice into an art form of late. Consider two gun-related bills endorsed by a House subcommittee in recent weeks."

"The bills in question are HR 5005 and HR 5092. Even the U.S. Justice Department agrees that some provisions contained in the bills could have a "chilling" effect on law enforcement's ability to crack down on sleazy gun traffickers, dealers and, indirectly, the gun-toting criminals endangering public safety."

"It has been almost a year since Rosina Chaba and her daughter, Ivy Thathana, were brutally murdered by a man they once loved."

"Today the spirits of mother and daughter have come back to haunt a policeman and the state."

"The policeman in question, Captain Thivakoni Thomas Mandiwana, is in hot water for having handed Jim Dioka Thathana back his licensed firearm, which he later used to kill Chaba and Thathana." ...

"Masipa said a person of Mandiwana's rank should have known better than to give Thathana his firearm because there was a protection order against Thathana, which clearly restricted him from carrying one."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787)
