Years ago, I had an editor who used to say that there are two types of Americans: those who get nervous at the sight of a gun, and those who get guns when they’re nervous. Given the headlines this month, folks in the latter camp feel they have good reason to take up arms. |

Getting good grades — if they come from the National Rifle Association — is turning into a campaign weapon in the race between two Broward County Democrats running for state Senate. A campaign mailer for Gary Farmer accuses former state Rep. James Waldman of once getting an A rating from the influential pro-gun group, which grades candidates based on their support of the Second Amendment right to bear arms. |

South Dakota’s delegates say this year’s Republican National convention stands out for more than just its unconventional opening. “Security is tighter at this convention, there are more layers of protection, they're doing different things to ensure credentials, so I've hear that's changed since four years ago,” Huron Delegate David Wheeler said. |

A multi-decade effort by conservatives to reshape the U.S. Supreme Court would be finished if Hillary Clinton wins the White House. She’d have the opportunity to nominate at least one and probably more justices to the high court and even if she chooses moderates like Merrick Garland the days of striking down federal regulations or upholding the Second Amendment right to bear arms are over. |

Charleston County is begging the state of South Carolina – and the federal government – to impose sweeping bans on assault weapons and ammunition. “I cringe why we as a country, a nation, state, county, or city won’t do something about gun reform,” county councilman Henry Darby said last week. “We are more concerned with ‘I have a right to own this style of weapon. I have a right to own this style of weapon’ — as opposed to being concerned about others.” |

The NRA is not only a constituent part of the Republican Party. It is in some ways a microcosm of it. Its demographics: an aging, male, non-urban, racially anxious, white base. Its policy prescriptions: outlier positions unsupported by science. Its politics: defensive and bitterly opposed to compromise. |

Here is the simple formula for changing the reputation of culture of a city. Win an NBA title and everything else will fall into place (Also, choose to host the Republican National Convention). As the King James and the Cleveland Cavaliers articulated one of the most scintillating comebacks of all-time, the threshold was pierced for the acceptance of greatness to be synonymous with the city on the shores of Lake Erie. |
