Richmond City Council approved an ordinance Monday that would ban weapons on city property and parks. Despite the vote for the ban, multiple council members commented it was highly unlikely the Republican-controlled Virginia General Assembly would give council approval to institute the policy. Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney put forth the paper eight days ago in response to the mass shooting in Virginia Beach, which took place in a city building, as well as the fatal shooting of 9-year-old Markiya Dickson, who died after someone opened fire in Carter Jones Park in May 2019. |

After victory in the Spanish-American War, the United States found itself in possession of the Philippines, which put American interests on the doorstep of China, even then a hotbed of international trade and intrigue. The Philippine Islands offered an important staging area for American trade and political interaction with the Manchu Empire. By the end of the 19th century, China struggled with a de facto partitioning of its territory by the Great Powers.

Starting today, July 1st, stun guns are now allowed on Iowa's public college campuses. This includes Iowa's three state universities -- Iowa State University, University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa -- as well as community colleges. Republicans say this is a way to keep students safe and reduce sexual assaults on campuses. Democrats say stun guns serve as a false sense of security.

Picture this: a new law going into effect that actually increases the amount of ammunition in the hands of gun owners. In other words, two or three times as many bullets available for use as there were a few months ago. Think California governor Gavin Newsom and fellow gun-control advocates would ever stand for such a thing? Well, they’re not only standing for it — they helped make it happen. |

The state of Illinois holds a B+ rating from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence (the highest rating given is an A). Gun control advocates would have you believe this means it should be a relatively safe place. Yet Illinois’ largest city, Chicago, has long been an embarrassment to this notion. The city if anything has had an even lengthier list of gun controls than the state itself, but it has also seen years of terribly high rates of violent crime.

A law lowering from 21 to 18 the age limit for carrying a concealed handgun within city limits in Idaho without a permit or training went into effect Monday. The law passed by Idaho lawmakers and signed by Republican Gov. Brad Little aligns gun laws in urban areas with rural areas where those 18 and older can already carry a concealed handgun. About a half dozen other states have similar laws allowing 18-year-olds to carry concealed guns without a permit. |

We all want to raise our level of skill, but why is gaining confidence equally if not more important than improving your physical skills? Having all the skill in the world with no confidence is just as bad as your mouth writing checks that your skill level can’t cash. So, what does it take to increase both your level of skill and the confidence to pull it off? Whether it’s shooting, martial arts, defensive driving or any other physical (or mental) skill, the symbiotic bond between skill and confidence must be clearly understood and then fostered. |

Shortly before midnight in April, a man was riding a rental scooter to a local store and driving through a parking lot in Tulsa, Okla. While exiting the parking lot, the man got into an argument with a woman and a teenaged boy seated in a parked car nearby. The man left the area and returned, throwing down his scooter and brandishing a knife. Acting quickly, the youth grabbed a concealed-carry gun in the vehicle and shot the other man in self-defense. |
