"A grieving mother whose son was shot and killed on the streets of Birmingham made a heartfelt plea to parents trying to stop the bloodshed caused by the city's gun gang culture."
"Gleen Reid spoke out at a packed public meeting in Handsworth organised by three mothers who want to see an end to gang violence."
"Gleen's...only son Corey Wayne Allen was gunned down in front of passers by outside the Oaklands community centre in Handsworth two years ago..."
She said, from the place where guns are banned:
"We need to get these guns off the streets. As parents you feel that you don't have the power to do this, but you do. No-one wants their child to die before them. My son was not sick - he was taken from me by this gun gang culture." |

"Analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data from the Firearms Injury Surveillance Study for 1993-1997 show a dramatic decrease in non-fatal firearms-related injuries for all age categories for children and adolescents. This decrease coincides with a similar drop in accidental firearms fatalities, which reached an all-time low in 2000."
"In 1999 NSSF launched Project HomeSafe, now among the nation’s largest firearms safety initiatives, distributing free Firearms Safety Kits in communities around the country. The safety kits, distributed in cooperation with Lt. Governors and local law enforcement, include a cable-style gun lock and firearms safety brochure. Project HomeSafe is funded by the firearms industry and a $4.9 million grant through the U.S. Department of Justice. For more information on Project HomeSafe visit www.projecthomesafe.org." |

Let's see... A crazed gunman kills 16 in Dunblane. A crazed MD kills over 200. This means that Britain must ban doctors. Unless they believe it is the person and not the means. In this case, they must reverse the gun ban. But this would require logic, so forget it. |

"Britain has unveiled sweeping changes in its criminal justice system, scrapping the ban on 'double jeopardy', the 800-year-old legal principle that forbids trying a suspect twice for the same crime."
"Other changes include making hearsay evidence admissible in court and letting jurors know of suspects' previous crimes."
"The plan also introduces trial without jury in serious fraud cases where there is a risk of jury intimidation, allows the police to lock up dangerous sexual or violent offenders indefinitely, and adjusts sentencing guidelines to tailor the punishment to the criminal, not just the crime."
Helena Kennedy, a Labour member of the House of Lords, has described the plan as a "wholesale assault on civil liberties".

"Lawmakers appear ready to give themselves another pay raise, their fourth in four years."
"If the raise, about $5,000 a year, goes into effect, rank-and-file members of Congress would receive $155,000, an increase of more than $20,000 over the past decade."
"Under a 1989 law, congressional pay raises, determined by a complicated formula that includes a measure of private industry employment costs, go into effect automatically unless lawmakers vote to block it."
"House lawmakers cleared the way Thursday for the salary hike."
"The 3.3 percent pay raise, which would go into effect in January, would also apply to more than 1,000 top executive branch officials, including the vice president, and members of the congressional leadership. The vice president, like the Speaker of the House, now gets $192,600 while House and Senate majority and minority leaders receive $166,700." |

"Children's curiosity and teenagers' love of risks makes them extremely resistant to efforts to persuade them not to handle guns, such as the National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle campaigns as well as programs by gun control advocates, it found."

"A total of 22787 firearms were destroyed by the SA Police Service on Thursday."
"Senior Superintendent Andrew Lesch said the destruction -- using explosives -- was part of the police's continuous effort to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and reduce firearm-related violence in South Africa."
"Firearms destroyed included rifles, shotguns, machine guns, revolvers and pistols. Firearm equipment was also destroyed."
"The guns included 9073 confiscated firearms and 13714 redundant state firearms."
"Gun Free South Africa welcomed the destruction saying that weapons were destroyed throughout the world on Thursday to mark July 9, the day the United Nations declared International Small Arms Destruction Day."
"It said in a statement 6000 illegal guns were destroyed in Cambodia, 1700 in Mozambique, and 10000 in Brazil."

HOPEWELL - "The remaining two suspects sought in the theft of more than 400 guns from the private collection of a pawn shop have been arrested, Hopewell police said yesterday."

Jamaica's gun control laws are very strict -- thus, criminals have a much easier time whacking people they don't like. Self defense with a handgun? Over there it's usually considered a reason for imprisonment -- unless, of course, you're a government employee, a politician, or a wealthy/influential citizen. The commoners are on their own, and this is what results -- just like in New York City, Chicago and Washington D.C. |

This anti-gunner gives the Bush administration more credit than many gunowners do:
"The real goal of Justice's new strategy is not to throw a bone to the gun lobby but to mount a backdoor attack on the very legitimacy of gun laws it doesn't like but doesn't have the guts, in the current political climate, to try to repeal legislatively."
To this editorialist, the First Amendment's mention of "the people" means it's an individual right, but the Second Amendment's mention of "the people" doesn't mean anything of the sort.
So naturally, he supports the illegal and unconstitutional "ban on military-style assault weapons" -- he'd rather those types of weapons be owned solely by the employees of government.
Then he quotes from VPC something about how a .50BMG can "blow a nine-inch hole in a concrete wall from 100 yards." That must be that cartridge that's "as big as a ketchup bottle."
He didn't give us his email address, which is probably good: that many factually bankrupt views all wrapped into one editorial suggest a letter would be a waste of time. |

"Five years ago this week, [Clark] Flatt's son, a fullback on his high school football team, killed himself with his father's pistol. His father says Jason was despondent over a school relationship."
"Describing himself as 'angry at this thing that took my son,' the owner of an insurance business began by leaving more and more of his work to employees while he enlisted young people, teachers and parents to try to focus public attention on the problem."
We're drawing attention to this seemingly well-intentioned suicide interventionist for one primary reason. A quick look at his Foundation's "Get the Facts" page website page produces the following irrational statement:
"Accessibility to firearms, particularly handguns, influences the rate of teen suicides."
No individual or study has ever PROVEN that accessibility to firearms influences teen suicide rates. Daddy needs to get out of his emotions long enough to get real. Visit the KeepAndBearArms.com Suicide and Guns archives to explore the issue deeper than he has.
We're sorry Mr. Flatt's son chose to end his own life, and we wish him continued and full recovery from the loss -- but his pain doesn't give him license to deceive. |
