MI: Guns, partners and more changes come to Saginaw Animal Care Center

It's been less than a year since the new director of the Saginaw County Animal Care Center Lisa Stoffel was hired but so much has changed in 11 months.

"It's been absolutely insane here in the last couple of weeks, but who am I kidding," Stoffel said. "It's been absolutely insane here since August 1," she said.

Stoffel began her new role as director on Aug. 1, 2016, hailing from Alaska. Since that date, she has hit the ground running with ideas, new partnerships and most recently and perhaps the most controversial change was adding firearms and Tasers for animal control officers to the mix.

The Saginaw County Board of Commissioners approved the weapons at their May meeting.

Submitter's note: guns for safety, what a concept.

AK: Gun-safety rules apply in the photo studio too

The photography studio my parents hired an untold number of years ago allowed three changes of clothes and a variety of props and backgrounds — from a mottled gray to laser beams.

Senior photos are not usually due until November or December, but many seniors book summer and fall sessions to capture themselves outdoors — or at least with a tan. When my friend's daughter recently shared images of herself with a shotgun and hunting dog from her senior session, it made me smile and reflect on the story behind the image.

That doesn't mean that a senior can't pose with a hunting rifle, shotgun or bow in their senior photo sessions, which happen off campus.

Here is the news the mainstream media says never happens. Responsible gun owners defended themselves and the people they care about. Self-defense instructor Tony Simon joined us this week to talk about three recent examples. Were these gun owners lucky.. or were they well prepared?

First story- Are you armed at work in the afternoon?
Second story- Are you armed at home late at night?
Third story- Are you armed at a work early in the morning?

What can we learn from their performance? Listen and find out. Text and podcast available at the link. (15 minutes)

What do most of us think about legal gun owners?

In theory, legally armed Americans are is just like anyone else. In practice, unarmed america views firearms owners with fear and distrust. This shows in their personal and their political preferences.

The news and entertainment media built a false image of legal gun owners. These distortions leave honest gun owners as political scapegoats.

At a recent hearing before the Massachusetts Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Judiciary I listened to testimony from panels comprised of clergy, physicians and law enforcement officers who oppose H. 763 and H.789, two bills that would remove the 90-year ban on silencers for use by the general public. As a former school principal, the prospect of a shooter with a gun equipped with a silencer fills me with horror. Citizens of Massachusetts are fortunate to live in a state whose commonsense restrictions on the availability of lethal weapons to civilians have rendered our commonwealth, as determined by gun deaths per capita, the safest in the nation.

A special legislative session in Texas ordered by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott began Tuesday with loud protests over a revived "bathroom bill" targeting transgender people, renewed hostilities about a crackdown on immigration and GOP infighting that could keep demands of influential social conservatives again out of reach.

Ed.: Gov. Abbot is playing hardball, but *still* not interested in recognizing a right to carry a handgun in TX.

Despite considerable policy differences on the old continent, one issue almost entirely unites Europeans: gun control. This is currently reflected through legislators, who, despite the apparent ineffectiveness of current gun regulation, continue to infringe on the right to bear arms.

The EU Commission in Brussels agreed on stricter gun laws last December, with EU interior ministers deciding on new measures despite several members, including the Czechs, voting against it. The new directive institutes a complete ban on semi-automatic firearms, tightens regulations on online purchases, and allows for an exchange of information about gun owners across the continent.

According to a report from our Fayetteville NBC affiliate KNWA, the right to carry a firearm can be taken away if a person applies for a medical marijuana card. Arkansas voters approved medical marijuana in the 2016 elections.

Imagine spending the day at a shooting range, then taking up a self-defense and yoga class, snagging a massage and throwing a party, all under one roof.

Later this year, you may be able to do so under a new concept that’s being proposed by Caliber Club, Shooting Sports, Inc. at the Peterson Company’s Commonwealth Center off Route 7 near One Loudoun.

The company submitted plans with the county earlier this month.

Florida has fast-tracked concealed-weapons licenses to 82,000 military members and honorably discharged veterans since terror-related shootings at a pair of military installations in Tennessee two years ago.

State Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who along with Gov. Rick Scott helped expedite the permitting process as part of the state’s reaction to the shootings in Chattanooga, Tenn., made an appearance Tuesday to discuss the effort, which has played a part in Florida’s increased number of people allowed to carry concealed firearms.

NRATV released a video Monday in which talk radio host Grant Stinchfield lambasted the Washington Post as a "fake news" outlet that published "blatantly false" stories about gun owners.

Stinchfield criticized the Post for an article about comments former Navy SEAL Dom Raso made on NRATV, in which he said the left was enabling "organized anarchy" in the form of riots. The Post‘s article said Raso's video did not have "clear connections to Second Amendment rights," because it was not about guns, which Stinchfield criticized.

If you think the state Legislature is full of gun nuts, Rep. Micah Van Huss begs to differ.

“No, not at all,” Van Huss says when asked if the General Assembly is too pro-gun. “I don’t think they’re pro-gun enough. In fact, … I think our laws in Tennessee infringe on our constitutional rights. There are now 16 states – we’ve added two or three this year – that allow constitutional carry. So, we’re falling behind.”

Investigators working on the Minneapolis police shooting released the first details of their probe late yesterday, but those will create more questions than answers. The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, which now has jurisdiction over the case, reports that one of the two officers involved heard a loud noise just before Justine Damond approached the driver’s side of the police vehicle. That apparently prompted the officer to shoot, although that explanation is somewhat murky for another reason:

The Women’s March offered a heartfelt “happy birthday” tweet to Joanne Deborah Chesimard, a known domestic terrorist — while accusing the National Rifle Association (NRA) of promoting violence.

The July 16 tweet celebrates Chesimard as a “revolutionary,” despite the exiled terrorist’s status on the FBI’s Most Wanted List. This is ironic, considering the group’s recent vitriol against the NRA, which it has accused of promoting gun violence.

Moreover, Peredes fears this is exactly what SB 464 will do–it will force local gun stores to close up shop. And he said Big 5 was in the trenches fighting SB 464 along with everyone else, until they apparently worked out a deal that made the new gun controls palatable for the sporting goods conglomerate.

Peredes told Breitbart News, “Big 5 Sporting Goods was at the table with us and the California Rifle & Pistol Association when this legislation was introduced, then they brought in a consulting firm. Such a firm’s job is to represent their client’s interests and work out a deal. They worked out a deal and walked away from the table. Left the rest of us in a lurch.”

Tomorrow, July 20, will be the last day of session before the Legislature will break for the summer recess before returning on August 21. It is a flamethrower that can launch a lightsaber-like, half a meter long stream of fire so that women can fend off unwanted sexual advances. The device is being promoted as a necessary “anti-pervert weapon” that is small enough to fit inside any size purse or handbag and can be carried around inconspicuously.

Some of these flamethrowers come in the shape of a cigarette lighter and can produce smaller flames, while others launch a 50cm flame with temperatures of up to 1,800 degrees Celsius (3,300 Fahrenheit). The price at online shopping sites can range from about $13 to over $40 and one seller even bragged on local media how they can “scald or even disfigure an attacker.”

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is suing the head of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services over alleged violations of the gun rights of would-be foster parents. The would-be foster parents, William and Jill Johnson, were trying to secure custody of their grandson when William was reportedly told he had to hand over the serial numbers for every gun in the home to complete the process. William claims the caseworker said, "If you want to care for your grandson you will have to give up some of your constitutional rights." Todd is outraged.

“The Court also rejected Defendants’ proposed instructions on the First and Second Amendment because they are not legally cognizable defenses, or in other words, the law does not recognize these Amendments as legal defenses to the crimes charged,” Navarro wrote, though the Bill of Rights were added to the Constitution to spell out natural rights that Congress must not trammel with its laws.

The First Amendment bars Congress from making laws abridging free speech and peaceful assembly, while the Second states the right to keep and bear arms may not be infringed.

But apparently those are not defenses against laws prohibiting behavior that causes federal officers to feel threatened.
