"Only about 4.5 percent of the nation's federally licensed gun dealers are checked each year to ensure they comply with firearms laws, far below the goals set by the agency that does the exams, the Justice Department said Monday."

"At that rate, it would take the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives 22 years to inspect all 104,000 federally licensed gun dealers, said a review by Glenn A. Fine, the inspector general at Justice. ATF's goal is to check each dealer once every three years."

"ATF Director Carl Truscott said the agency's 420 inspectors could never keep pace with that many gun dealers."

"The powerful U.S. gun lobby seems poised for victory in a high profile battle to end a ban on some assault weapons and experts say it has also been piling up numerous quiet victories at the state level."

"A federal ban on certain military-style semi-automatic weapons enacted in 1994 is due to expire on Sept. 13. The Republican congressional leadership, backed by the National Rifle Organization and other gun groups, seems determined to allow the law to lapse."

"Gun control groups say only vigorous intervention by President Bush could change congressional minds. They concede that the chances of that happening weeks before the Nov. 2 presidential election are zero. ..."

"Proponents call the restriction necessary to protect sensitive law-enforcement information and avoid exposing undercover officers involved in gun-trafficking investigations."

"Critics fume that the gun industry simply doesn't want the public - or cities suing gun manufacturers for negligence - to have access to federal information about guns used in crimes."

"Rick Stanley, a Denver, Colorado businessman and former political candidate, was arrested for openly carrying a gun in violation of Denver Revised Municipal Code 38-117.5(b) on December 15, 2001 during a rally celebrating the Anniversary of the Bill of Rights. Stanley was arrested again in Thornton, Colorado on September 7th, 2002, for violating a Thornton City ordinance, not allowing guns on a person in plain sight. Stanley was convicted on felony counts in both cases and faces prison time. Stanley's lawyers tried to argue that the the Thornton ordinance became invalid after Gov. Bill Owens signed a law last year that limited the ability of local governments to regulate firearms." ...

"In a sharply worded report, the Justice Department's Inspector General has found numerous problems with the Department's oversight of gun dealers, and says a new requirement that Brady Act background check records be destroyed within 24 hours will make it easier for corrupt gun dealers to sell guns to criminals." ...

"Here we have the oversight agency for the Justice Department finding that Attorney General Ashcroft's plan to destroy background check records will protect corrupt gun dealers and allow criminals to get guns," said Michael Barnes, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March. "What happened to the Bush Administration's pledge to strongly enforce our gun laws? Now the Justice Department itself has admitted that its policies have weakened the Brady Act."

weapons made by these companies and featured in the study will remain on the market, legal for sale to the American public under federal law."

Leave it up to the gun banners. They want to supplement one ineffective law with another ineffective law. Considering that these weapons are rarely used in crime, what is the problem?

Some people have tried to frame it in individual words like, Freedom, Liberty and Independence. And Freedom is the word I choose. But the concept and the reality cannot be limited to mere words. No one is contesting their right to carry pistols in the open. But choosing to do so is gratuitously confrontational and borderline immature. Their need to display their weapons in Starbucks for supposed self-defense reasons is laughable.

As an attorney, I know I have the right to wear a T-shirt with a curse word to court if I am making a political statement. I choose not to, however, out of respect for myself and my fellow citizens.
