"Nebraska gun rights proponents left the Hilton Garden Inn on Saturday feeling better armed to protect their cause after attending a conference led by influential gun rights activist Alan Gottlieb."

"Gottlieb instructed a one-day seminar on grass-roots organization for gun rights groups, which those in attendance said will help grow their base and keep Nebraska gun rights intact."

"Gottlieb said people who attend his seminars have a passion for preserving gun rights but often lack the needed legal, media and organizational expertise."

"'It's really fun to train them,' Gottlieb said. 'Many people are naive about how that works, but people are hungry and thirsty for the knowledge.'" ...

"In 1979, the group now known as the Brady Campaign said 'over 50 million handguns flood the houses and streets of our nation. . . . If we continue at this pace, we will have equipped ourselves with more than 100 million handguns by the turn of the century. One hundred million handguns. Will we be safer then?'"

"With the 85-and-older population growing faster than any group in the country, gun ownership among the very old is increasingly a concern of adult children, who worry that elderly parents will commit suicide or shoot someone they mistake for an intruder," Dale Russakoff writes in The New York Times' 'The New Old Age' blog."

... "Next time any organization tells you that you do not need your guns because the government is respectful of your rights, remember that as soon as there is no reason to respect you the respect will end. As long as both parties are strong, the interactions between both will be mutually profitable. History shows that when the government is stronger than the people, the people become property of the government."

"Finger-pointing follows national trend"

"As the investigation continues into Saturday's double homicide at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah, the blame game has already kicked off on the reader feedback columns in Seattle newspapers, and important new information is surfacing that must be checked out."

"As predicted in this space yesterday, anti-gunners are already trying to twist this case to fit their gun prohibition agenda, blaming the [NRA] and its members. More about that nonsense in a moment."

"This week a judge ordered Mel Gibson to turn in or get rid of all firearms in his possession ... The impetus for doing so is a claim by Gibson's former girlfriend that the actor waived a gun in her face and mumbled something about showing her 'how to get out of here real fast ...' ... All such accusations should always be tested and verified before singularly usurping a non-felon's Constitutionally protected second amendment rights.

"The History Channel has been running a show called 'Top Shot,' in which shooters young and old, male and female, from disciplines ranging from old-style rifle to modern speed pistol compete in visually exciting marksmanship challenges. There's both individual and team competition, with $100,000 cash prize for the last shooter left standing, one elimination per weekly episode. (Why a shooting show on a HISTORY channel? Because they use historical weapons.)" ...

"While I too might enjoy the program more without the drama, 'Top Shots' seems to be drawing a healthy audience, and showing the shooting sports to the general public in a positive light, and that seems to be A Good Thing."

"There is a minor kerfuffle in the right wing blogs about Michael Bellesiles being caught publishing fiction as truth."

"The right wing has it in for Bellesiles, since he once faked data on gun ownership in early America, trying to prove no one owned guns then ... So there are a lot of people out there to 'get' him when he writes."

"On Monday, June 28, 2010, The Supreme Court reaffirmed the Second Amendment during the trial of McDonald vs. Chicago. "EVEN AS TWO MEN were being tried in a Philadelphia courtroom in the 2008 murder of police Sgt. Stephen Liczbin-ski with an SKS assault weapon, Officer Kevin Livewell and his partner escaped death last week from assault-weapons fire on a Kensington street."

"The two cops stopped a van Thursday night - and three men came out, guns blazing. Livewell was shot in the leg and will recover; no body armor could have protected him if a bullet had hit a vital organ. After the shooting, police found an arsenal of eight assault weapons - among them an SKS, every one of them legal to be purchased and owned by anyone without a criminal record." ...

"That Anthony Graber broke the law in early March is indisputable. He raced his Honda motorcycle down Interstate 95 in Maryland at 80 mph, popping a wheelie, roaring past cars and swerving across traffic lanes."

"But it wasn't his daredevil stunt that has the 25-year-old staff sergeant for the Maryland Air National Guard facing the possibility of 16 years in prison. For that, he was issued a speeding ticket. It was the video that Graber posted on YouTube one week later -- taken with his helmet camera -- of a plainclothes state trooper cutting him off and drawing a gun during the traffic stop near Baltimore."

"... Graber was indicted for allegedly violating state wiretap laws by recording the trooper without his consent." ...

... "Sheriff Johnstone is absolutely correct. Iowa law does not reference the carrying of weapons by permit holders in privately owned businesses. All business owners are free to post their locations as 'no guns allowed' at will ... If a permit holder is found to be carrying in the business, the owner must ask the patron to leave, or the patron risks a trespassing charge. Likewise, permit holders are free to patronize businesses the respect the wishes of those who choose to carry a firearm, and avoid businesses that do not."

"However, Sheriff Johnstone is incorrect to believe that Iowa DPS can simply 'come up with rules' governing this situation ... Iowa DPS does not create law – the Iowa Legislature creates law. .." ...

"Iowa Public Radio released a story today about the upcoming changes in the Iowa gun laws. Highlighted in the story were several pro-gun sound bites from the leaders of the Iowa Firearms Coalition (formerly known as Iowa Carry) and Iowa Gun Owners. Also included were sound bites from two Sheriffs who are opponents of the new laws."

"Unfortunately, the story has a couple of inaccuracies that need to be addressed." ...

"The reporter incorrectly states that under the current law, it is the Iowa Department of Public Safety that prescribes the training standards statewide for those who wish to obtain an Iowa Permit to Carry weapons. In reality, each individual Sheriff set his own standards, which varies from county to county." ...

"I need to point out the pervasive level of ignorance your editorial board (June 30)."

"Our 220-year-old Constitution is a timeless document that our U.S. society is based on today. ... Are these guidelines for life out of date?"

"Our founders would not sign the Constitution without a Bill of Rights. The Constitution deals with the hearts of mankind. Your motivations do not change from millennia to millennia. For our university indoctrinated friends, this is the rub. They think these fundamental rights (Bill of Rights) come from government or men. The right to self defense is a universal right granted to us from God, not from government or men. So, in short, they can not be taken away. ..." ...

"In 2001, the United Nations created the 'Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects' (PoA). The PoA is not a treaty. Rather, it is a mechanism for encouraging voluntary cooperation. ..."

"In 2008, the U.N. Secretary-General stated that the PoA's results as of that date were not 'substantive.'[1] As a voluntary mechanism, the PoA posed few dangers and offered the hope of modest gains in cooperation to address illicit arms trafficking. The 2010 biennial meeting demonstrated that these hopes are unlikely to be fulfilled. The better facets of the PoA are being weakened, while its worst aspects are receiving additional emphasis." ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Foolish liberals who are trying to read the Second Amendment out of the Constitution by claiming it's not an individual right or that it's too much of a public safety hazard don't see the danger in the big picture. They're courting disaster by encouraging others to use the same means to eliminate portions of the constitution they don't like. — Alan Dershowitz
