A while back, we discussed the difference between the ideal and the achievable. It is a conundrum that many Second Amendment supporters have, whether it is legislation or candidates. Our enemies often have the same problem, so we can take some small comfort.

The letter, which is dated as of July 15, was signed by 37 of Washington state’s 39 county sheriffs excluding Mitzi Johanknecht of King County and Interim Sheriff John Gese of Kitsap County. The sheriffs say that this statement was released due to a growing concern over the protection of constitutional rights.

My father acquired this 16-ga. shotgun in Germany during World War II. He was with the 1262nd Combat Engineer Battalion. It is a French gun, a Robust No. 32, manufactured in Saint-Étienne, France. He got it in the vicinity of Erlangen or Heroldsberg, Germany, toward the end of the war when German civilians were required to turn in any firearms they had. |

Two individuals come to mind at the mention of the Confederate States of America, General Robert E. Lee and Former-President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis. Both General Lee and Davis were men of principle and conviction as they stood up for what they believed; however, for a variety of historically complicated reasons, General Lee became a far bigger symbol of the Confederacy after its demise than Davis. Although Davis remains a sort of avatar for the end of states’ rights, some have come to view him as a Southern patriot. |

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Commander Jack Kennedy gave an update this afternoon on a Tuesday morning shooting at a motel on Skyland Boulevard that resulted in one person being treated for injuries. Kennedy said the initial call of the shooting came in at 8:22 a.m., with the Tuscaloosa Police Department and VCU investigators called to the Ramada Inn at 631 Skyland Boulevard East. He went on to say investigators believe there to be a serious component of self-defense in the shooting and no charges would be filed — at least today — against either subject involved in the altercation. |

Much has changed since last summer. In July 2020, notoriously anti-gun researchers circulated a paper that alleged an association between what they deemed “excess” gun purchases early in the pandemic and violence. This year, the same researchers disproved their original findings with the addition of new data. |

Remember purchasing a polymer-framed striker-fired pistol only to spend even more to customize it to fit your needs? Yes, we all do. Add weight to the frame, lighten the slide, change the grip angle, add a beavertail, add optics capability—the list goes on and on. In the end, you could almost triple the pistol’s original cost. Today, gun makers offer pistols with all those extras as standard. Case in point is the new RIA STK100, which is a feature-rich factory pistol that sets a new highwater mark for this trend. |

This is, as far as I can tell, a first for Shooting Illustrated: A motor vehicle review. Now, I’ve had a motorcycle license almost as long as I’ve had my carry permit, and one thing I’ve noticed from participating in both communities is a fair amount of crossover. You’re likely to find more than the average number of gunowners in a group of motorcyclists, and vice versa. Perhaps it’s the enhanced feeling of freedom? Maybe it’s being in control of your own destiny? Whatever the reason, bikers like guns and gunnies like bikes. At least that’s how it seems to me. |
