"The Congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious has gone cold. This despite the fact that 'on Thursday, June 28, 2012, [Attorney General Eric] Holder became the first sitting member of the Cabinet of the United States to be held in criminal contempt of Congress by the House of Representatives for refusing to disclose internal Justice Department documents in response to a subpoena.' Wikipedia’s entry for 'ATF gunwalking scandal' tells the sad tale of the Obama administration’s coverup of the ATF’s extra-legal anti-gun-running gun-running program, that armed the Mexican rip crew who gunned down US Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry. That coverup continues. ..." ... |

"Reports over the weekend, including this one on Vox about the failure of laws prohibiting hand-held cell phone use and texting while driving carry a lesson on why restrictive gun laws don’t work to reduce crime."
"The swirl is about an article in the August issue of Transportation Research, in which the results of a study on the effect of cell phone restrictions in California 'found no evidence the California ban reduced the frequency of traffic accidents.' It is essentially the same result obtained by an earlier study, reported in January 2010 by CNN, which revealed, 'State laws that ban drivers from talking on hand-held cell phones seem to have no effect on crash rates.'" ... |

"Some time ago the Wall Street Journal wrote an opinion piece – an expose that appeared in the May 24th-25th Weekend Review Section, titled 'Duty and Pity.'"
"The WSJ author, Phil Klay, wrote '. . . there is something deeply unsettling about the way we so often choose to think about those who served.'"
"Klay says that we choose to pity our returning soldiers. But, as he adds, 'pity sidesteps complexity in favor of narratives that we’re comfortable with, reducing the nuances of a person’s experience to a sound bite.'"
"Klay points out that something sinister is going on here. And, what it is feeds into the goal of antigun groups and their allied politicians who, as we know, seek to separate Americans from their guns." ... |

"As National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea noted Friday, rabidly anti-gun Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) wants Gun Owners of America Executive Director Larry Pratt 'investigated,' for remarks Pratt made in an interview for still another anti-gun hit piece in Rolling Stone magazine. According to an article in The Hill, Maloney is especially worried about a passage that begins as follows:""'The Second Amendment is not for hunting, it’s not even for self-defense,' Pratt explained in his Leadership Institute talk. Rather, it is 'for restraining tyrannical tendencies in government … Especially those in the liberal, tyrannical end of the spectrum.'" ... |

"Gun control proponents are making something of a “big deal” out of the alleged discovery of a perforated paper target at the League of Women Voters office in Seattle, intimating in today’s Seattle Times that this may be an effort to intimidate the group for its stance on Initiative 594, the 18-page gun control measure being pushed by the Washington Alliance for Gun Responsibility (WAGR)."

"The lengthy letter from Joseph C. Clemmons in a recent edition of the Bastrop Advertiser was so full of misrepresentation, distortion and falsehood that it is difficult to counter each point in the normally alloted number of words the Advertiser allows."
"The main point that Clemmons and others of his political persuasion entirely miss is that the Second Amendment and, for that matter, the entire Bill of Rights are not like subsequent amendments which dealt with issues like voting and prohibition and the repeal of the latter."
"The Bill of Rights grants us absolutely nothing. Rather, the Bill of Rights affirms natural, God-given rights that neither the federal government, nor any governtment, have any business meddling with." ... |

"The AR-15 is the most popular firearm design in the United States. The reason behind that fact is the gun’s ability to easily and quickly transform to meet the end user’s requirements. Everything from heavy-barreled long range precision to tiny stubby 9″ lightweight designs are possible, and swapping from one to the next can be accomplished using everyday tools and a little elbow grease. MGI recognized this fact and decided to take it one step further — why need tools at all? Why not make a gun where you can change barrels, calibers, and even magazine types easily and quickly on the range without any tools? And so they did, and dubbed it the Hydra . . ." ... |

"Fear-mongering masquerading as informed concern is what most politicians and pundits do when it comes to the discussion of mental illness and dangerousness. The new focus on mental illness as the principal culprit behind gun violence is not only without merit, it is discrimination."
"A handful of high-profile shootings America has turned the gun debate focus to mental illness. This is absurd. There are 10,000 homicides with a firearm every year in America. Only a small fraction of these are done by people who had mental illness as a factor. Over one recent weekend, more than 60 people were shot in Chicago alone. The media is rightly not focusing on mental illness because it is not a primary factor in gun violence." ... |

"Two weeks from today, Missourians will vote on Proposed Constitutional Amendment 5, which declares the right to keep and bear arms 'unalienable.' This was not long ago in doubt, because several parties had filed lawsuits enjoining the state to either reword the ballot's description of the amendment, or even remove it altogether from the ballot. The 'reasoning,' supposedly, is that in merely telling voters that the measure would upgrade the state's recognition of the right to the status of 'unalienable,' the ballot failed to adequately inform voters that gun laws would now be subject to the 'strict scrutiny' standard of judicial review ..." ... |

"Oh the gun blogosphere is all spun of over CA's Governor Brown signing SB1964. For those of you not familiar, CA has a list of approved handguns which have been deemed 'safe' to be purchased by law abiding citizens in this state. Don't worry, none of the states that border CA follow this safety list so you know it is complete BS. The list centers around guns having certain safety features like loaded chamber indicators and a few other minor things, but gun manufacturers must pay the state money to have their weapons tested and continually pay to keep these handguns on the list. Make no mistake, the whole purpose of this list is limit which handguns are legal here and slowly choke off the flow of new handgun owners in CA." ... |

"'Gun violence has reached almost endemic levels in Chicago,' thinkprogress.org declares, after another ballistically active Windy City weekend (22 people shot in 24-hours). Adam Peck meant to use the word 'epidemic.' 'Endemic' means '(of a disease or condition) regularly found among particular people or in a certain area.' 'In epidemiology,' Wikipedia informs, 'an infection is said to be endemic in a population when that infection is maintained in the population without the need for external inputs.' "The tragic surge in murders that struck Chicago over the July Fourth weekend has brought forward gun control advocates who want to hype the political battle between Michael Bloomberg and the National Rifle Association (NRA) yet again. The situation in Chicago is a tremendous tragedy, and gun control supporters are acting upon Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s famous advice to never let a tragedy go to waste. They are citing the violence in Chicago to offer misguided solutions that will only impact law-abiding citizens.
