"The New York Police Department's newest weapon against terrorism, armored trucks, will likely debut during the Republican National Convention, according to a Local 6 News report."

"The Bearcat vehicle has steel plating designed to stop armor-piercing ammunition, bullet-resistant windows, a rotating roof-top turret and eight gun ports."

"The armored cars are equipped with lights and sirens like most NYPD vehicles and can carry as many as 10 officers."

"Radiation or toxic gas detectors and an infrared camera system are also extras on the vehicle, according to the report."

"So far, about 100 Bearcats have been built and there are orders for several hundred more." ...

"Harvey Williams is a vigilante hero."

"That is the opinion of many of his Western Addition neighbors, who are angry that Williams faces assault with a deadly weapon charges after shooting a gun-toting crook caught intruding in his Fell Street home."

"Williams, a soft-spoken 29-year-old electrician, arrived home Tuesday at 1 p.m. to find his front window smashed and an armed burglar lurking in his condo. A wrestling match ensued, during which Williams forced the pistol from the burglar's hands, picked it up, and plugged the intruder four times as he ran down the front steps and onto Fell Street. The unidentified man was listed in stable condition at San Francisco General Hospital."

"Police say Williams went too far." ...

"There are only six days left when Congress is in session before the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban -- a law that President Bush pledged he'd renew as a candidate for President in 2000. 'It makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society,' he said then. And another Republican leader made statements this week indicating the President can get a vote by simply asking for one."

" 'President Bush is blocking a vote on the Assault Weapons Ban,' said Michael Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March."

Authorities say a robbery attempt ended with one of the suspects being fatally shot by the intended victim.

Roy Rhodes, a liquor store worker, told investigators he was almost to his home on Augusta Avenue early Wednesday when he heard someone behind him.

Ware County sheriff's spokesman Major Randy Royal said Rhodes, who was carrying a pistol, turned around to see two people coming toward him.

One of the robbery suspects, 20-year-old Carl Jerome White Jr., was struck in the exchange of gunfire and died at the scene.

Royal said Rhodes was shot in the leg but was brought to a hospital and is expected to recover.

The other suspect fled the scene and is being sought by investigators.

"The New Hampshire Chapter of the Million Mom March, NH Ceasefire and the New England Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence hosted a press conference this morning in downtown Portsmouth to call the public's attention to the pending expiration of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB) less than eight weeks from today."

"Representatives of the groups called for a ban on the sale and possession of all assault weapons, echoing sentiment from law enforcement leaders in the Granite State. To date, 28 NH police chiefs have signed on to an official letter to New Hampshire's Congressional delegation calling for a strong and effective assault weapons ban." ...

"On July 31, thousands of gun enthusiasts from all over the area will descend on Fairfax County to browse among 1,000 vendors selling tens of thousands of firearms at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. The event, billed as "The Nation's Gun Show" by its organizers, is the first such event in Fairfax County in 40 years and one of the biggest gun shows the state has seen, said Steven Elliott, president of C&E Gun Shows, the Blacksburg company which is organizing the event." ...

Don't you just hate the phrase "but it's for the children." Oh, how I hate that phrase. Whenever you hear a politician use the words "It's for the children" what they're really saying is "we're raising your taxes, Bubba." But lets just be honest for a minute here... sit down with ole Trev and think about it... why are we (as in Libertarian activists) doing what we're doing today? Likely, we're doing it for the children.

Extreme right-wing Conservatives rant that the "liberals" have destroyed "our country" and are destroying our "way of life". First of all, it is not your country. You happen to share it with millions of other people, who all have just as much of a say in how things operate here as you do. You do not own America anymore than the liberals do. And quit trying to recreate 1950's "Leave It to Beaver" America and shove your "traditional family values" down everyone else's throat.

"The criminal case, which deals with the brutal murder of a Lanham veterinarian and his wife in 1999, shows that the court of appeals 'expressed its extreme dissatisfaction with the length and manner of interrogations' on three separate cases where Prince George's County detectives held suspects passed the legal allotted time. "The San Jose man shot in the back and killed by a state drug agent in February had a knife in his pocket that could have been mistaken for a gun -- a detail that could explain why the agent thought he was acting in self-defense."

"But critics of the evidence presented before a criminal grand jury Wednesday questioned why the man would have put the four-inch folding knife back in his pocket after being mortally wounded rather than throw it away." ...

"Several law enforcement witnesses have testified Walker told them he thought Cardenas had a gun, though police found no gun at the scene or on Cardenas. A San Jose police officer who patted down Cardenas right after he was shot also did not find the knife."

"But later, a crime scene investigator going through the slain man's bloody clothes found a folding four-inch knife with a black handle in his left front pants pocket." ...
-------

But according to Dewayne Tully, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police, "The issue of self-defense becomes not an issue when he’s no longer threatened. When there’s no longer a life-threatening situation, at the point when the gun was dropped and the burglar started running, it is no longer a matter of self-defense."

"I am a father of teenagers and was surprised at the response I got when I asked one of them what she would do if someone pulled up in a car, pointed a gun at her and told her to get in. The answer: 'I guess I would have to do what they say because they have a gun.'"

IF THE NRA sounds shrill and hysterical it is so because they have had to match the tone of their opponents [Examiner View, July 5].

The history of the last 40 years shows that gun control is a failure because criminals don't obey the law.

The British banned and confiscated all handguns in 1997. The result? A skyrocketing criminal use of guns.

One must ask oneself why seemingly intelligent people continue to push for a failed policy. The answer is unknown to me but it is likely darker and more injurious to civil liberties than they will ever publicly admit.

The second ratified amendment to the Constitution was designed not to grant a right to "recreational shooting" as you fatuously state, but rather it was meant to guarantee the people of the United States (not the states themselves) the final veto over the power of the government, should that government become overreaching or a threat to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

In a bizarre incident, a man who entered a grocery shop with the aim of looting it went back laughing, without taking anything, when the shopkeeper told him that he only had 20 pounds.

The alleged robber even joked and asked the shopkeeper whether he was on candid camera.

According to Anannova, the man had walked into the shop, pulled out a gun and demanded cash from the staff. When they told him they only had 20 pounds he started laughing.

"I showed him how little we had and told him we had only just opened and had hardly any money yet," the shopkeeper was quoted as saying.

"He just started laughing and asked us if it was a joke and he was on candid camera and then turned and walked out. He didn't even bother taking the bit of money that we did have," he added.
