"While reading the Herald and News online I noticed a July 15 article which elicited my interest. Titled, 'Another 'responsible' gun owner charged with murder of teen now claims self defense.' This no doubt follows the national controversy involving the George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin case."

"Too, an increasing number of private citizens nationwide, including women, have become first time handgun purchasers and now carry concealed via a valid concealed carry permit. Naturally I laud, support and embrace this trend of armed citizens. Yet I’m likewise cognizant of the fact that packing a lethal weapon such as any firearm, is a serious matter, and can have legal consequences." ...

Fourteen more firms have scaled back their gun investments by 7.4 million shares—27 percent of their holdings.

Ms. Magazine is running a multipart article by a board member of the Brady Campaign of all people. She buys the gun, refuses to learn how to use it because, as she says, she does not have to by law, and spends a lot of pages describing how carrying an unloaded gun with no training has changed the way she thinks, does not make her safe, worries her about many things that comfort the rest of us and does not make her feel safe at all. In fact the gun seems to have taken control of her mind. Heck I had a gun that I had no idea how to use or when to use it, I might feel the same.

Republican Michael Steele Compares Trayvon Case to Sandy Hook

Former RNC chair Michael Steele likened Sandy Hook to the Trayvon Martin case during a heated discussion on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday.

He likened the two as incidents that should have inspired legislative change, but didn't because Obama failed to lead. So while he didn't compare the two as events of the same magnitude, his comparison does suggests that the correct response to nationally-distressing crimes is to change the law.

In the Gun Control Debate, the truth often suffers?

Have you noticed how each side in the current argument about guns has a favorite statistic that they like to throw around? For the NRA it's the 2.5 million crimes that didn't occur last year because more and more people use a gun to deter a crime. For the president and his supporters it's the 40 percent of all gun transfers that take place without a background check. The NRA claims that their number "proves" that we would all be safer if everyone walked around with a gun. The gun-control crowd says that their number "proves" that we need to expand background checks so that guns won't end up in the wrong hands. Does anyone know where these numbers come from? Here's the answer.

How reliable is reliable for a gun?

We often read and hear people talking about how reliable their semi autos are. However, my experience has taught me to ask under what conditions. Gun reliability is very subjective. I have read gun rag writers say it is one jam out of 300 rounds fired and some say it is no jams at all over the life of the gun. There is even dispute over what is a gun jam. I have seen many a friend's gun jam at the range and months later hear them tell others that their gun never jammed. Either they forgot or they attribute the jam to bad ammo, user error or some other factor other than the gun. So in addition to what constitutes reliability we also have the issue of what constitutes a jam. I will concentrate on the former for the purposes of this post.

Nashua Mayor Donalee Lozeau quit New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun group Mayors Against Illegal Guns after it exposed its true mission: to pursue strict new gun-control laws. She has had plenty of company. A review of the group’s membership by news and entertainment website Buzzfeed.com found that it has lost more than 50 members who have quit, lost re-election or had their terms expire.

Lozeau quit after she saw the group’s first ad attacking U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte for voting against a gun-control bill. “I said, ‘Wait a minute, I don’t want to be part of something like that,’” she told this newspaper last month. “I told them, ‘You’re mayors against illegal guns, you’re not Mayors for Gun Control.”

The Ohio-based Buckeye Firearms Association has established the “Zimmerman Second Amendment Fund” for the purchase of a new handgun for George Zimmerman.

The Justice Department has put a “hold” on evidence for the Zimmerman trial. That decision means Zimmerman is unable to have his gun returned to him despite the fact he was found not guilty.

“This is about more than mere principle. Zimmerman and his family now face daily threats on their lives,” the association wrote in an email soliciting funds, “more than ever, he has a right to defend himself against those who would seek to do him harm.”

A spokeswoman for Gov. Sean Parnell says he continues to support a so-called "Stand Your Ground" law in Alaska.

Sharon Leighow says Parnell's position hasn't changed since last month, when he signed legislation allowing for use of deadly force in self-defense in any place a person has a legal right to be. At that time, Parnell said Alaskans' way of life depends on their ability to carry firearms to defend themselves, provide for their families and "live freely."

If one fears for one’s life in another situation, however, the law says that there is a duty to retreat, and the individual who feels threatened must attempt to get away safely and reject the use of deadly force.

What stand your ground rules presumably do is to simply ensure that law-abiding citizens understand they can use deadly force if incapable of retreating. According to Sheldon Richman, these rules were seemingly put in place in an attempt to keep violence from escalating and ensuring individuals wouldn’t use deadly force arbitrarily while claiming self-defense.

Ed.: The author and Mr. Richman are wrong about the duty to retreat with and without SYG laws.

The ORA will argue that law-abiding Oklahomans should be able to protect themselves and their property. We agree. But according to a study published in the Journal of Trauma, Injury, Infection, and Critical Care, a gun in the home is 22 times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self-defense. And compared to other developed nations, American children die by guns 11 times more often.

Shelton has the right idea. Oklahoma needs to stop and reconsider its ever-loosening gun laws; we cannot imagine a more pertinent time than in the wake of the past year’s well-publicized shooting deaths, in which legally acquired guns did nothing to curtail the slaughter.

George Zimmerman helped rescue four people from an overturned vehicle in central Florida last week, just days after he was cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, officials said Monday.

Seminole County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said in a statement that deputies responding last Wednesday afternoon to the wreck in Sanford — the Orlando suburb where Martin was shot — found Zimmerman and another man had already helped a couple and their two children out of a flipped SUV off the road near Interstate 4. They were not hurt.

Noel believes it would not hurt lawmakers to re-visit the stand your ground law.

Along with firearms-related issues, Hammer helped secure funding for the McKay scholarships for children with disabilities --- such as her grandson --- and for speed-limit signs outside private schools like the one he attended. She has lobbied to allow dyslexic children to use talking computers during standardized tests.

Hammer was inducted into the Florida Women`s Hall of Fame in 2005 and is a certified firearms instructor. She spoke to The News Service of Florida on July 12, the day before George Zimmerman's acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin.

And here we go, four days after the event, something that I could not have planned but turned out to be just pure George.” O’Mara said he was surprised that Zimmerman ventured out into the Sanford community so soon after the acquittal, “but that’s how he is.”

People often say dumb things in the heated passion of political debate. And in the new era of gun control regulations, inflaming emotions rather than engaging in a rational discussion has become all too common.

What follows is a list of 9 dumb quotes from gun-control proponents about the Second Amendment, gun violence, and guns that confirms, once again, that thinking before emoting is easier said than done.

As fallout from George Zimmerman's acquittal in the death of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin continues, the anger is fueled partly by the assumption that the case would have turned out very differently with a black shooter and a white victim. For critics of the verdict, it is self-evident that U.S. law does not protect blacks who defend themselves, only whites who kill them. But is there evidence to support this scathing indictment? The facts and figures offer some surprising answers.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey says he wants to take a look at the state's self-defense laws to make sure a situation like the deadly shooting of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin can't happen in Connecticut.

Sharkey told The Associated Press on Monday he wants to consult with law enforcement officials and community groups to identify whether there was something they were missing in current state laws and, if necessary, address it during the new legislative session in February.

Is this, as he implies, a new and dangerous concept confined to a few radical states? I will examine this premise without attempting to justify these laws or any of the recent and tragic results of the use of deadly force by people claiming to have acted in self defense.

The concept of self defense means if a person is attacked and reasonably believes they are in imminent danger of suffering great bodily injury or death, they may respond with that force they reasonably believe necessary to protect themselves.

“The Obama administration attack on stand your ground laws suggests the White House cannot tolerate the individual right to self defense and the right to use force of arms in self-defense,” gun rights expert John M. Snyder said here today.

“Obama’s attorney general, Eric Holder,” noted Snyder, “said the other day with regard to stand your ground laws that, ‘it’s time to question laws that senselessly expand the concept of self-defense.’ The attorney general does not value stand your ground laws to protect the right to self-defense, to protect life itself from prospective criminal attack.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To prohibit a citizen from wearing or carrying a war arm . . . is an unwarranted restriction upon the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege. [Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, at 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52, at 54 (1878)]
