"New York City's feisty mayor is being sued. Former Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Barr has filed a lawsuit against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, claiming that his campaign and subsequent crackdown on gun dealers is 'careless, willful and clearly illegal.'" ...
"Of course, the powerful politically connected gun lobby has put Mr. Bloomberg, who recently met with the mayor of Atlanta, Ga.--part of his coalition of mayors against gun violence -- in its political cross-hairs." ...
"'We didn't start this fight. They did,' Mr. Barr told the crowd in Marietta's city square. 'We will fight to prove the Constitution of the United States is still intact, and that Mr. Bloomberg's fight to abolish the Second Amendment must and will fail,' added Edwin Marger, a lawyer who filed the lawsuit with Mr. Barr."
"Cheering and dancing notwithstanding in Georgia, we agree with Mr. Bloomberg's spokesman." |

"The prohibition on assault weapons, which went into effect in 1990, is cause for hundreds of gun lovers like Newby to cross the state line twice a year and head for the Machine Gun Shoot at Nevada's Mustang Range to get a taste of the forbidden fruit."
"Some seek the adrenaline rush from firing high-power weapons. Others go for the opportunity to exercise their Second Amendment rights."
"For Newby, shooting is a hobby akin to golf or horseback riding." ...
"Newby looked on with a mix of delight and disappointment, acknowledging that gun culture attracts all types."
"He generally votes Democratic or Green and said he could do without the political display or, for that matter, the 'zealots' camped out in full combat fatigues by vintage military vehicles in the parking lot."
"The more extreme gun culture is what the outside world sees, Newby said." |

"Miller, 16, a junior at Gates Chili High School, had just walked off the skeet field on July 15 at Rochester Brooks Gun Club in Rush. A perfect 25 out of 25 targets on the last round of the day and a solid 95 out of 100 on the first of two days at the Scholastic Clay Target Program's national championships didn't placate Miller." |

A state lawmaker won’t be prosecuted for firing a gun while arguing with two utility workers in his parents’ backyard.
Rep. Wallace Scarborough, R-Charleston, was arrested July 15 by Charleston police after firing a single round from a 9 mm pistol. At the time, two S.C. Electric & Gas linemen were inspecting storm damage in the backyard of Scarborough’s parents’ home in West Ashley.
Scarborough said he thought the men might be robbers. The round fired, he said, when he tripped while walking away from the men. Prosecutor Ralph Hoisington said Scarborough’s conduct did not amount to assault with intent to kill. “I don’t think we can prove there was any intent to harm somebody,” Hoisington said. |

"During the last presidential campaign cycle, many national and local police organizations, as well as individual officers and commanders, supported the reelection of George W. Bush. Commanders and rank-and-file officers understood the fact that compared to the alternatives, Bush was the right man to serve as Commander-in-Chief in wartime." ...
"But now there's increasing disenchantment with President Bush on his handling of illegal immigration and border security. More and more police agencies find themselves engulfed in crimes being committed by illegal aliens. ..."
"This is a widespread problem and will eventually lead to more crime and violence. How can the President of the United States allow foreign soldiers on US soil who are carrying automatic firearms? Where are the so-called gun control advocates in congress who wish to disarm American citizens? Are they not concerned with foreign nationals entering the country armed to the teeth? US police departments are outgunned and outmanned and no one save a few congressmen are displaying any concern." |

"Supporters of the federal firearms registry have pointed to the tragic deaths of two RCMP officers in Saskatchewan as evidence of the need of the registry."
"That's a bit of a stretch. It's true that Constables Robin Cameron and Marc Bourdages were shot in the head by long guns, but whether a well-established long-gun registry could have stopped that event is questionable. Yet these shooting deaths do remind us, as did the deaths of four RCMP officers last year in Mayerthorpe, that we have a gun control problem in this country. ..." |

"Rep. Stephanie Herseth speaks proudly of her South Dakota rural heritage, and so she should. However, her Democratic party House leadership (Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Calif.; John Conyers, Mich.; Charles Rangel, N.Y.; Barney Frank, Mass.; Maxine Waters, Calif., and others) are strong anti-Second Amendment, pro-gun control advocates." ...
"The survival of our Second Amendment is not a local/state issue; it is a national concern. Herseth can indicate a Second Amendment stance in Redfield or Huron; however, what counts is what she does in Washington, D.C. As she is a Georgetown University graduate - hotbed of leftist/liberal activism with pronounced gun control advocacy - her position is a concern to all who believe in the Second Amendment." |

"In the 11 years since its passage, Utah's concealed-weapon law has become the closest thing to a national concealed-carry permit, with six of every 10 permits this year going to out-of-state residents."
"A tidal wave of nonresident applicants since January has state Bureau of Criminal Identification officials overwhelmed and concerned that Utah taxpayers are subsidizing nonresidents' gun permits. Worse, they say the huge numbers of out-of-state applicants are robbing resources from other important public safety duties - particularly doing criminal background checks on school employees." |
