"A story in Friday morning's on-line Seattle Post-Intelligencer reminds readers that despite federal and state laws forbidding it, convicted felons can get their hands on guns."

"In this case, detailed rather well by the P-I's Casey McNerthney, a man identified as 23-year-old Jeffrey Dywayne Harris, was arrested for being a felon in possession of a gun in the aftermath of a shooting. Harris has two felony drug convictions, and is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms. But when did that ever stop a criminal from getting a gun?"

"According to the story, Harris had a 9mm Glock that he claimed to have bought from a 'crack fiend' for $300 ..." ...

Don't judge a book by its cover

"I love the old saying that 'you should never judge a book by its cover.' When you make the mistake of doing so, it can really turn around and bite you in the rear end. There is no doubt we have all made this mistake more than a time or two in our lives."

"There is one organization often judged by its cover, with the judger having very little actual knowledge of the organization or what it spends its time and efforts on. The group I am referring to is the [NRA]. When the NRA is mentioned, it will most likely generate one of two responses — the first being respect and the other disdain ... most folks either love it or hate it. With education you normally get a better understanding. What follows is a little background on the NRA." ...

"The [NRA] is in the process of educating the next generation of gun rights advocates, taking their message directly into the belly of liberal academia with their campus initiative, NRA University ..."

"NRA U is a training class for students interested in learning more about gun safety, the NRA, the Second Amendment, methods for crime prevention and legislative threats to gun rights. It aims to arm — pun most definitely intended — students with the information they need to debate and become effective activists for gun rights."

"Rachel Parsons, an NRA spokesperson told The Daily Caller, 'NRA U was conceived to help pro-gun students have a voice in the often one-sided gun control debate on many college campuses.' ..." ...

"Once again, America’s interests, and the rights of her people, are at risk. And once again, a United Nations treaty is the source of this danger—the U.N Arms Trade Treaty, to be specific." ...

"The Preparatory Committee is not engaged in negotiating a treaty, but in defining what should be included in the treaty when it is negotiated. As a result, many of the statements by the participating states are very general. But enough has been said to show that the Obama Administration’s decision to participate only on the basis of 'consensus'—which it justified as a way to ensure that the final treaty is satisfactory—was ill-advised." ...

NC: No surprise from Burr

"This comes as absolutely no surprise: Republican Sen. Richard Burr will oppose Elena Kagan's confirmation."

"His statement today:"

"'I opposed Ms. Kagan's nomination to be Solicitor General, and the little additional information provided through the confirmation hearing process has given me no reason to change my mind in support of her to serve on the Supreme Court. With no judicial record, I am left with reviewing her decisions in academic life ...'"

"... I am also concerned about her views on Second Amendment rights and her lack of sympathy for law-abiding gun owners. She has consistently substituted her personal beliefs for the law, giving poor advice on the constitutionality of options she disagreed with ..." ...

"You may recall from my post earlier in the month that Sportsman's Guide had the Swiss equivalent of the US MX-306/G wire dispenser."

"The Swiss dispenser, called a 'wire ball' in Swiss Army parlance ... contains 6-strand, black plastic covered, WD-1TT equivalent phone wire, 800 meters long (approx. 874.75 yards, or one half mile). In the Swiss dispenser, however, the US canvas and tape design is replaced by a similarly shaped very sturdy 16" x 16" plastic container with D-rings for securing to a packboard or ALICE frame. The Swiss version weighs 30 pounds. The ones being offered for sale by SG are in brand new ..." ...

"I was bemused by your front page article, 'Police arrest woman in shooting,' ... and a letter to the editor in the same edition, 'Shooting ranges: Strengthening national security' by Quentin McKenna."

"The 19-year-old woman cited in the headline ... and the victim were admiring his weapon, which she thought was unloaded. She shot him in the face and killed him the process."

"Mr. McKenna argues in his letter that we should divert money from our 'adventurism abroad' and build more shooting ranges, which he feels would encourage 'safe and responsible gun ownership' ...'" ...

Submitter's Note: If the "woman cited in the headline" had been taught basic gun safety the "victim" almost certainly would still be alive.

"As a retired federal law enforcement officer, I experienced firsthand handgun violence when my 20 year old brother Michael was fatally shot in a robbery aboard a CTA el in 1972. I have worked with families of handgun victims through programs both in the Cook County State's Attorney's Office and the Victim Advocacy Project in the Illinois attorney general's office. Most expressed the hope that our tolerance of guns in our society should be challenged."

"Zins, of Poland, Ohio, shot consistently high scores throughout the event, winning the .22 Caliber Championship and placing in the top three for the Center Fire and .45 Caliber Championships. In the end, his aggregate score of 2650-134X placed him at the top of the leader board for the tenth time in his shooting career. "I am writing to respond to the column by Dan K. Thomasson in The (July 20) Herald Mail."

"Thomasson is unhappy with the Supreme Court because of Justice Alito's opinion in the recent McDonald case, in which the court ruled that the Chicago law forbidding handguns in the home was unconstitutional."

"Thomasson claims that the National Rifle Association 'disdains to bring sanity into the gun debate.' Really? I retired from the legal office of the NRA and do not recall ever being instructed to omit sanity from a legal argument. By 'sanity,' one must assume, Thomasson means that state in which one's perceptions conform to objective reality." ...

"Friday, the National Rifle Association (NRA) announced its endorsement of former U.S. Congressman Nathan Deal for Georgia Governor."

"'In politics, one can learn the character of a person by working with them over time,' said Chris W. Cox, chairman of NRA-PVF."

"'I have worked with Nathan Deal for more than a decade, and his record as a U.S. Representative and as a Second Amendment supporter is stellar. His constant and unapologetic support for gun rights in Congress demonstrates a strong commitment to the rights of law-abiding gun owners and sportsmen.'"

"A disgraced Florida Highway Patrol trooper will spend 364 days in jail for writing hundreds of phony tickets to motorists who were never pulled over for traffic offenses."

"Paul C. Lawrence pleaded guilty Wednesday to eight misdemeanor counts of falsifying public records."

"Prosecutors said Lawrence wrote hundreds of bogus traffic tickets using the information of motorists he had previously pulled over. Befuddled drivers, some of whom were out of the country at the time of the alleged traffic violations, suddenly got tickets in the mail and in some cases, had their drivers licenses suspended." ...

"It could then be weeks before a community support officer visits to read the log." ...

"Anthony Bush, owner of the general stores and post office in Killingholme, said: 'It's an absolute joke. You might as well put a sign on the door to say 'nick up to £19.99'. I wish the police would explain to me how this is going to drive down shoplifting."

"Senate Bill 1108, which allows people to carry concealed guns with no permit or safety training, takes effect on July 29 ... It makes Arizona the third state behind Alaska and Vermont, all supportive of gun rights, to enact a law that raises concerns for law enforcement."

"'It's disconcerting,' said Mesa Police Chief Frank Milstead. 'The fact that anyone can walk around and carry a gun without training is disconcerting. We don't let our police officers walk around with a gun without training. Some people will start shoving a gun down their pants and shoot themselves.'" [link added] ...
