Salt Lake Tribune: Armed Pilots Would Deter Hijackers

"Opponents of allowing pilots to be armed have portrayed horror movie visions of pilots and terrorists shooting it out in the aisles of airliners. But the main reason for arming pilots is not so that they can re-enact the gunfight at the OK corral. The main reason for having guns for self-defense anywhere is deterrence."

"One issue is cost. Mineta said it would cost $860 million to set up a training program, plus another $250 million to retrain the pilots every year."

[Front Sight offered to train them for free -- a LONG time ago. In other words, Mineta is full of BATF.]

"Steve Young, national president of the Fraternal Order of Police, appeared before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary yesterday to offer testimony in support of S. 2480, the 'Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act,' at the request of the bill's sponsor, Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.). The legislation is the companion bill to H.R. 218, the 'Community Protection Act,' and is the top legislative priority of the F.O.P."

"This bill is not about firearms, it is about officer safety,"
Young said.

Is Crime Increasing? - Understanding the latest numbers.

"As the economic slowdown drew to a close in late June, a long run of good news about crime rates came to a screeching halt. Suddenly, newspaper headlines were screaming that 2001 saw rising crime in America for the first time in a decade. Late last week, Canada also reported slight increases in crime. Following a record-busting nine-year run of declining crime rates, the FBI reported that America had seen a two-percent crime increase last year just as the economy slid into recession."

"The bad news about crime, however, is both more and less important than it seems. On one hand, 2001's increases in crime were so tiny that Americans should not panic — yet. On the other hand, those increases reflect a worrisome retreat from the combination of effective community-oriented policing and ample investment in incarceration that have made the United States the safest large Western nation."

• Several Dozen Robberies

NOTE: Of these numerous reports, at least 29 of them involved criminal misuse of a firearm -- many of them banned handguns. It appears that criminals not only disobey the handgun ban, but that they are using it to their great advantage... as is the case in "Great" Britain.

But some - like the suggestion now floating around Washington that the Posse Comitatus Act be relaxed to give the military a domestic law-enforcement role - should not get much time on anyone's agenda. It counters core American beliefs and presents the potential for problems, and dangers, this country does not need."

"A BRAVE mother and daughter battled with armed robbers who raided their Lakeside shop on Thursday night."

"Three men, one carrying a gun, broke into the living quarters above Gentry's Store, Farm Road, to gain access to the shop at about 10.30pm."

"Shopkeeper Pam Price was in the office and her daughter, Lindsey, was in the main store."

"Miss Price, 24, said: "Before I could press the panic button, I had this man on me."

KABA NOTE: If these women had pulled out a firearm and shot these villains, chances are very high they'd be in jail, and the "Home Office" would consult the surviving thugs as to whether or not to charge the women they attacked. If they'd used a banned handgun in self-defense -- like the one these violent thieves used against them -- the women would be headed for prison.

"Two automatic firearms obtained years ago by a Smith County constable were missing when a new constable took office this month and learned they were at the home of a fired deputy constable, authorities said."

"The 9 mm Steyer-Daimler fully automatic machine guns were purchased in 1991 after a deputy constable donated money to then-Precinct 3 Constable Rick Waller."

"The high-powered weapons, which were only available for sale to a law enforcement or government agency, were not on the department's inventory and were missing from an evidence locker when a new constable took office."

"Waller, now the Whitehouse police chief, said he was confronted earlier this month about the missing guns by his successor, veteran lawman Danny Smith."

"Smith said he learned of the machine guns days after he took office through another deputy but they were nowhere to be found during an evidence locker search. Federal firearms agents couldn't help because Smith had no serial numbers, he said."

"Waller said he asked his ex-chief deputy about the missing guns and he acknowledged he inadvertently kept them."

GET THIS: "Waller said the constable's office purchased the two machine guns at a reduced price in May 1991 through a special mail offer from the manufacturer of the firearms. The offer, Waller said, was restricted to law enforcement agencies. ... Waller recalled paying $100 to $200 for each gun but does not remember where they were mailed from, and said he does not have the receipts. ... Waller assumed he did not record the gun purchases with the auditor because they amounted to less than $500."

At a news conference after the videotape was shown, [sean] Baker [a member of the Oklahoma City chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People] said:

"It's getting to the point now where the community is outraged and beginning to think they have to take to the streets and begin retaliating. Of course, we don't want that to happen, but I think the only message the police officers will understand is when they have to start passing flags to the wives and paying some death benefits. Nothing else has worked."

Maybe it will take some death benefits like he said, but if a white man said that it wouldn't take an investigation -- he would be in jail.

Part of the interview comes from a martial arts instructor who says, "When someone catches you by surprise, I don't care if you're Bruce Lee, and if you're a 100-pound woman, let's face it, it's going to be hard to stop a 250-pound guy with a knife."

Yet there is not one single mention of the most affordable, most effective, easiest to use, easiest to carry tool of self-defense ever devised: the handgun.

"The city commission put the police force's seven officers on indefinite leave [with pay] after realizing the city charter did not give police authority to make arrests and issue citations."

"Only the acting police chief, Edwin Jenkins, remained at work Wednesday. He was deputized by the Levy County sheriff, empowering him to enforce county ordinances and state laws, City Manager Earl Cannon said."

"The issue could be brought up in criminal cases where Chiefland police made arrests, State Attorney Bill Cervone said."

"Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith said until a solution is found, he will schedule off-duty and reserve deputies to work in the town of 1,900, about 110 miles southeast of Tallahassee."

"AGS Says Bill Good for Gun Owners, Bad for Criminals"

"The bill is aimed at fixing a huge hole in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) system - a hole that was first highlighted by the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation in a report last January that revealed how over ten thousand criminals got guns and how countless legitimate firearms purchases were delayed due to a faulty background check system."

"The ale flowed and they celebrated long and hard in his local pub when the conquering hero returned home from a distant land with a gun and gold in tow."

"The folk of Longparish, a lovely unspoiled village nestled in the Test Valley in Hampshire, could hardly have seemed more united in their delight for the success of Richard Faulds; one of their own who had made good, having just been crowned an Olympic shooting champion."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
"Secrecy is the keystone of all tyranny. Not force, but secrecy ... censorship. When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing)
