"Have you noticed that some of your friends and relations who perch on the extreme Left of the political see-saw are currently trembling with outrage and trepidation over some actions of the federal government which, they predict, could deprive us all of some precious Constitutional rights?"

"Only a few years ago, it was the folks on the outermost Right extremity who were anticipating some Constitutional rights being forcibly yanked from under them.
The difference is which Constitutional amendment is most important to them. Those on the Right worried about the Second Amendment mostly, with some smidgens of the Fourth thrown in (or out.)"

FULL TEXT BELOW:

It is perfectly legal, but enough to take one's breath away. Earlier this month a man showed up at a Colorado Springs City Council meeting with a shotgun. Don Ortega did it as a protest. The gun was not loaded. He was back on Tuesday, again with the gun.

Now some city council members say they want to challenge new state gun laws that allow anyone to carry a gun. Security at Colorado Springs City Hall consists of cameras, two security guards and one police officer.

Councilman Jerry Heimlicher told News First, "We have people coming to council meetings wanting to talk to their elected officials...and they shouldn't feel intimidated with a person sitting there with a shotgun." Council members are considering restricting the open carry portion of the state gun law. They still support the right of people with permits to carry concealed weapons.

"Security is a growing business in post-9/11 America. Last year's Government Security Expo and Conference (mostly high tech) show was so successful with 175 exhibitors, organizers said, that they expanded it and added the 'U.S. Law Enforcement' show with its somewhat more nitty-gritty exhibits for the 'gun and badge' folks."

"The result is a huge, wondrous hodgepodge of (mostly) U.S. security ingenuity ranging from computer firewalls to enhanced remote monitoring to radiation measurement and protection devices, biometric fingerprint recognition boxes, encryption devices, mobile command posts, body armor, surveillance vests, super-locks for classified material, see-through-the-wall radar, see-into-the-gas-tank devices, motion detectors, a new type of chain-link fence you wouldn't believe -- even the right kind of footwear."

A gunman arrested at a German school turned out to be a 15-year-old pupil taking part in a film project.

Police in Aachen received an emergency call alerting them to a man dressed in black and carrying two guns.

Patrol cars were sent and officers found the 'man' about to climb over the school gate, pointing his guns at the empty school yard.

One officer managed to throw him onto the ground and overpower him and several other policemen helped to hold him down.

But the gunman turned out to be a 15-year-old pupil armed with toy pistols who was taking part in a film project.

Police cautioned the teachers in charge, who agreed not to film any further scenes involving guns.

At the Ship Bottom Borough Council meeting this week, developer Richard Ghigliotty was asked to explain, for the benefit of the audience, a $20,000 contribution he had made to the borough.

Ghigliotty told how in order to build homes on a lot previously used as a boat marina, he came to an agreement with the state that he would give the borough that much so it could build a dock somewhere else.

"So, it's like a bribe?" asked former council candidate Betty Pickel, who was sitting next to him.

"Pretty much," replied Ghigliotty. "It's a bit of extortion. We all live in New Jersey and know how these things work."

"In an increasingly unhinged world of litigation, courts have shown refreshing wisdom in rejecting the claims. As the Florida appellate court said in throwing out Miami-Dade County's suit, 'The judiciary is not empowered to 'enact' regulatory measures in the guise of injunctive relief. The power to legislate belongs not to the judicial branch of government but to the legislative branch.' Hijacking legislative power is, of course, what the mayors and their gun-control-activist comrades had in mind."

"The worst part of it all is the utter contempt that even top government officials have for due process. Clinton Cabinet member Andrew Cuomo threatened gun manufacturers with "death by a thousand cuts," a brazen reference to the strategy of bankrupting them with defense lawyers' fees. The mendacious litigants knew their end run around orderly lawmaking was not likely to succeed, and they forged ahead anyway."
