CCRKBA Says Wilmette Trustees Acted Properly in Repealing Handgun Ban

"The [CCRKBA] said today that the decision by officials in Wilmette, IL to repeal their 19-year-old handgun ban is 'a victory of substance over symbolism.'"

"CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said the 1989 ban -- made infamous five years ago when Wilmette homeowner Hale DeMar shot a career criminal in the act of burglarizing DeMar's home for the second night in a row -- has never shown that it had any impact on violent crime."

"'It appears the only people affected by the ban were law-abiding citizens like DeMar who were ensnared by the ordinance for having guns that suddenly became illegal,' Gottlieb observed. 'Repealing the ban makes sense because the ordinance was grounded in nonsense.'" ...

... "... I think that the 97% of the gun owning population that isn't on the same wavelength as Mr. Vanderboegh, SayUncle, and myself needs to be reminded that the Second Amendment isn't about hunting, target shooting, and gun collecting. There's a reason they enumerated an individual right to arms, and it had to do with watering the Tree of Liberty, if necessary."

"Where Mr. Vanderboegh and I differ is on when (or whether) that watering needs to be done. As I said in my own comment at Snowflakes in Hell:"
There's a group of people, and as far as I can tell it's growing, that not only believes that we're headed for violent revolution, they want it."

"Here's more on OpenCarry.org's activity at Zoo Boise last weekend, this time from Clayton Cramer ... As reported in Sunday's Statesman, about 10 members of the local chapter of OpenCarry.org, a national group that advocates for citizens' rights to openly carry handguns, visited the zoo with their weapons in plain sight."

"'Do you know how to upset people, really fast? Force them to confront the reality that many people own and carry guns. It isn't even like open carry has some great advantage over concealed carry when it comes to self-defense. It's a bit quicker to draw, sure, but if a random spree killer is deciding who to attack first, guess who's first? The person who is obviously armed.'" ...

Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids in America

Americans have long maintained that a man’s home is his castle and that he has the right to defend it from unlawful intruders. Unfortunately, that right may be disappearing. Over the last 25 years, America has seen a disturbing militarization of its civilian law enforcement, along with a dramatic and unsettling rise in the use of paramilitary police units ..."

"These increasingly frequent raids, 40,000 per year by one estimate, are needlessly subjecting nonviolent drug offenders, bystanders, and wrongly targeted civilians to the terror of having their homes invaded while they’re sleeping, usually by teams of heavily armed paramilitary units dressed not as police officers but as soldiers. ..." ...

not make gun owners look like lunatics in the media for all to see? You know what ends up happening when the majority of the people in this country who don’t own gun, and don’t care much about gun rights, start believing that gun owners are out to foment a civil war? They start agreeing to take our guns away.

Some may want an armed revolution, but I don’t want to see it come to that. It is not inevitable or necessary at this point in time. I’d prefer to solve this problem politically, and guys like this aren’t helping. We’re winning right now, both politically, and the hearts and minds. Could we please not do stupid **** like this to *** it up? Thank you.

"I just visited Minnesota, which is not only a beautiful state, but an interesting one. It's the state whose former Governor was a professional wrestler, and whose next Senator might be a former comedian. And they've got a gun law there that is, well, quite astounding. Adults are allowed to carry guns almost anywhere. If a place of business doesn't want people to come in toting their weapons, they have to put up a sign saying they ban guns from the premises. If there are no signs, guns are welcome. ..." ...

"... Souder is looking to re-introduce legislation that would do away with the District's gun laws. Didn't the Supreme Court recently rule that the city's gun ban was unconstitutional, and didn't the police recently start registering handguns and the D.C. Council start re-writing the city's gun regulations? Yes, yes and yes."

"After reading Marc Folco's 'Open Season' column on July 20, I had to check the language of the U.S. Constitution. Mr. Folco's piece gave the impression that the Second Amendment and related 2008 Supreme Court decision not only guaranteed the right to own a gun, but also guaranteed the right to purchase gun licenses at prices determined competitive by gun owners."

"The Gun Owners Action League and others have every right to object to gun-related tax increases proposed by Gov. Patrick. Because of the 90 day amnesty program, you can bring your gun (unloaded and wrapped up) to the police and apply for a permit. If, like most people, you don't have a gun, you can begin the permit process, but good luck getting a gun. Without a gun store, or someone to transfer the gun, it won't happen legally." ...

Companion bills A-11033 and S-8228 have just been signed by Governor Patterson. This legislation creates a junior big game mentored hunting program for 14-15 year olds in which they can hunt with firearms while under the supervision of an experienced adult hunter. The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association thanks Gov. Paterson for signing the bill, which represents a very positive first step in making hunting more available to juniors. The NYSRPA hopes to work closely with the Governor and Legislature on these issues in the future.
