Responsible gun owners defended themselves, but you didn't hear it in the news. Instructor Jeff Street and host Rob Morse talk about three new examples.
First story- You hear your wife scream. You look outside and see two armed men pushing your wife towards the front door. Second story- You drive for a ride share company. You pick up two customers. Before you start to drive, the two passengers start punching you and reaching for the car keys. Third story- You dropped your children off at school. You return home and hear a sound coming from your upstairs bedroom. You open your closet and a man reaches out to grab you.
What would you do in these situations? Text and podcast available at the link. (13 minutes)

In a 2-1 bombshell opinion issued Tuesday, a panel of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that, “for better or for worse, the Second Amendment does protect a right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense” and that the open carrying of firearms for that purpose “falls within the core of the Second Amendment.”
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and founder of the Second Amendment Foundation, told Liberty Park Press that SAF “has always said that you have to allow some form of carry for self-defense. If you ban concealed carry you must allow open carry or vice a versa.” |

UPDATED: Predictably, the gun prohibition lobby is playing a “guilt by association” game in its effort to push a new gun control initiative in Washington State, capitalizing on last week’s disclosure that a Russian woman, Maria Butina, who was detained by authorities “has longstanding ties to one of Washington’s most prominent gun lobby groups, the Second Amendment Foundation.”
Backers of Initiative 1639, which would strip young adults of their Second Amendment rights (while asking them to use their voting rights to help pass the measure), sent an email blast that insinuates some sort of indiscretion because SAF’s founder “even attended an event – in Moscow – organized by Butina.” |

About 9:30 a.m. July 4, officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 1200 block of East Washington Street and found 22-year-old Jonathon Warner lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Des Plaines police. Warner was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was treated for his wounds, police said.

I’d hated guns since I was a teenager. It was a gun that killed John Lennon, after all. Guns killed President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King. Get rid of the guns, problem solved—or so I thought. In December of 2012, I even tweeted President Barack Obama, urging him to repeal the Second Amendment and “stop” the National Rifle Association. (Never mind that a president can’t do either by himself.) |

King County officials are set to unveil a new "gun safety action plan" that would require all gun owners in the county to securely store firearms, among other measures. The county is forging ahead with the plan even though the NRA and Bellevue-based Second Amendment Foundation recently filed suit against the city of Seattle over a similar measure. The suit claims that only the state Legislature has the authority to adopt gun laws.

Believing that “The Handmaid’s Tale” is a timely and relevant “cautionary tale” is the Left’s version of “Obama is coming for your guns.” Both ideas are sincerely believed by their respective audiences. Both ideas subsist on hyper-partisan fear-mongering. Both ideas are also great for fundraising. The biggest difference here is this: Former President Barack Obama supported gun control, whereas I’m not sure there’s anything indicating President Trump favors establishing a theocratic regime in which women are reduced to serving as handmaids.

The calendar soon will be flipping to August, a reminder that summer is waning. Major hunting seasons will be upon us before long. Like Pennsylvania, neighboring West Virginia has a proud deer hunting heritage, including honoring exceptional whitetail bucks and the hunters that take them. Such is the story of Bryan Farley, who last season harvested such a buck in the mountains of the Monongahela National Forest. |

Summertime hiking is a great pastime with many benefits, including maintaining fitness and agility, two traits that complement what I like to call defensive living—enjoying life while being capable of preserving it. Special considerations apply for hiking in the summer, with hydration and sun exposure being primary concerns. But there are aspects of defense to be accounted for as well. In some areas, the offspring of large animals are in the prime of exploring their surroundings, and otherwise peaceful critters like bears and mountain lions could become aggressive. In even the most pristine areas exists increasing concern for being an unwitting witness to illegal activities often conducted on public lands. |

Everyone’s got an opinion when it comes to “survival guns,” yet few have actually tried to survive with one, and this includes me. Generally, however, I’ve found that opinions of ideal survival guns are based on the arena in which a person envisions making his or her stand. For example, city and suburban folks, thinking they’ll be battling zombies for scraps in the street, tend to choose carbines or even handguns they can conceal. They generally lean tactical. Me? I'd go for a survival shotgun. |

Something remarkable happened recently in Silicon Valley. No, not the next big thing in technology. But perhaps the next big thing in civic engagement. Hundreds of residents from across the spectrum of viewpoints dedicated their Saturday to productive dialogue around firearms issues in our communities. The vision for the Community Summit on Firearms and Safety began with the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors shortly after the news of the horrific massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High Schoolin Parkland, Fla. Supervisor Dave Cortese took on the task of hosting a summit designed to demonstrate how we can share diverse opinions and avoid the all-too-common shouting matches we have experienced at town hall meetings.

“The age of the downloadable gun has formally begun,” said Cody Wilson after he and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) reached a settlement with the Department of Justice. On this week’s episode of Bullets, AWR Hawkins talks with Wilson about the three years it took to secure that settlement. Additionally, AWR discusses a Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling upholding an injunction against California’s “high capacity” magazine ban, David Hogg’s #WalkAway criticism, and a recent Gallup poll ranking of where gun control stands with the American people.

A gun-smuggling ring from the Palmetto State shipped guns to the Bloods gang in New York, officials said Monday in federal court. The guns traveled by car along what is known as the “Iron Pipeline” — routes along Interstate 95 from Southern states, including South Carolina, with weak gun laws to Northern states. Guns bought at gun shops or gun shows in South Carolina for $500, for example, can be sold for two or three times that price or more in the Northern states, where it is more difficult to buy guns.

Canadian law separates guns into three different categories: non-restricted, restricted and prohibited. A licence, obtained through a process that includes background checks and safety training, is needed to own any type of gun in Canada. Non-restricted guns include regular rifles and shotguns. Prohibited guns, which include automatic weapons as well as sawed-off shotguns and rifles under a certain length, handguns under a certain length and handguns that fire 25- or 32-calibre bullets, can be possessed by licensed owners who acquired them before current laws came into place.
