"Are America’s National Parks Becoming a Haven for Criminals?
America's national parks have long been a perfect escape for vacationers, places where families could retreat to a world where the biggest fear was a run-in with a local bear."

"Times have changed — and so have the parks. While families camp and boat and enjoy the beautiful wilderness, park rangers are suiting up in camouflage to fight drug dealers, smugglers, and even, on occasion, terrorists."

"Councilman James Davis unwittingly brought his killer with him to City Hall and helped him bypass the security surrounding the building that's home to the mayor and City Council."

"Until yesterday, elected officials such as Davis - a former cop who legally carried a 9mm handgun - were exempt from rules requiring everyone entering City Hall Plaza to pass through metal detectors."

-------
The power of political office apparently has its privileges. One privilege is being "allowed" to exercise the basic right to carry a firearm for self protection. Davis belonged to the same body politic which stomps mere citizens to the ground for seeking to exercise those same God-given rights. Is his death poetic justice?

I was appalled when I read the July 21 article "Local leaders across state buck gun law." The actions of these local governments are remarkably similar to those taken early last century in areas that didn't want blacks to vote.

I suppose gun owners should just "know their place" and not "get uppity" if we want to avoid trouble.

... "The legislation, introduced by Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Jon Corzine (D-NJ), would not only make the federal ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines permanent, but it would also significantly strengthen current law to meet the original intent of Congress. The Senate bill (S. 1431) is a companion bill to the 'Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2003', introduced in the House of Representatives in May by Reps. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and John Conyers (D-MI)."

"Why would they do that? The 'Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence' is giving the National Rifle Association (NRA) hell for not supporting their ill-advised and erroneous ban on what they call 'semi-automatic' hunting and sporting rifles. Why would the NRA do such a thing? They've been fighting this ignorant ban since its inception and with a better administration in place, it'll probably be repealed. Does the 'Brady Bunch' think the NRA is collectively stupid?"

"In a recent editorial titled 'Pistol-packing capital' (Our View, July 21), The Tribune refers to this as 'acting on the intellectually flawed and morally bankrupt argument that pouring more guns into a violent city would somehow make it less violent,' and that the proposal is 'grounded in a culture that has watched far too many movies.' It lists scary what-if scenarios involving accidents and shoot-outs in the streets. But in the end it offers not a single shred of real evidence for its position."

"It may have escaped The Tribune's notice, but there is a substantial and growing body of hard evidence that concealed-carry laws reduce violent crime rates far more effectively than any gun control law yet devised. And it happens without creating a flood of horrific incidents like the ones described." ...

"Not a good idea, according to top Dane County police administrators interviewed recently." ...

"For what I'm guessing is the vast majority of us who have committed a felony at least once, here's a question: Should we be banned from voting in elections, forever?" ...

"Ex-con suffrage has bubbled back in the news lately, ever since Alabama Governor Bob Riley vetoed a felon-voter bill a month ago, touching off protests and Jesse Jackson appearances. On July 14, all six Democratic presidential candidates who showed up at an NAACP convention backed felon re-enfranchisement."

"Democrats have a terrific incentive to make this a campaign issue: If ex-felons could vote, Democrats would win more elections. Research conducted by Uggen and Manza suggests that enfranchised felons would have tipped the scales to Al Gore, and to several Democratic senators in the 1980s and '90s. Famously, more than 600,000 ex-cons couldn't vote in Florida (though a small number managed to find a way), which means that the Felon Factor positively dwarfed Ralph Nader, hanging chads and butterfly ballots in terms of impact on that nightmarish statistical dead heat."

"Indeed, after the Martin shooting, a police spokesman was quoted as saying, 'We cannot have people take the law into their own hands.' All of Martin's neighbors had been robbed numerous times, and several elderly people were severely injured in beatings by young thugs who had no fear of the consequences. Martin himself, a collector of antiques, had seen most of his collection trashed or stolen by burglars. When the Dunblane Inquiry ended, citizens who owned handguns were given three months to turn them over to local authorities. Being good British subjects, most people obeyed the law. The few who didn't were visited by police and threatened with ten-year prison sentences if they didn't comply. Police later bragged that they'd taken nearly 200,000 handguns from private citizens. How did the authorities know who had handguns? The guns had been registered and licensed. Kinda like cars. Sound familiar?"

FULL STORY BELOW:

Ottawa police are looking for a suspect they say was involved in a barroom brawl that spilled into the street and led to gunshots Thursday night.

Police arrested two Ottawa men shortly after 11:15 p.m. outside Pepper's Lounge, 111 N. Main St. : a 43-year-old on suspicion of aggravated assault and illegally firing a gun, and 24-year-old on suspicion of disorderly conduct and battery, police said.

The men are patrons of the same bar, and the fight stemmed from a construction employment dispute, said Capt. Ron Puterbaugh, an Ottawa police spokesman. He said police think the fight began inside and that the 43-year-old man later fired a .32-caliber Derringer twice into the air outside the bar.

No one was seriously injured, and the man being sought , whom Puterbaugh described only as "a white male," isn't suspected of a firearms offense.

"On July 25, 1788, the first Ohio law to establish and regulate a militia was published in Marietta. It mandated all men between 16 and 50 perform military duty. They were required to arm themselves with a musket and bayonet, a cartridge box, powder horn, one pound of powder and four pounds of lead. They also were ordered to drill every Sunday."

"By November, fines were implemented for those who failed to meet the requirements. For example, a soldier with no musket and bayonet had to pay 50 cents. Those who failed to show up for drill were fined 25 cents. Refusing guard duty cost them $1. And failure to serve in case of invasion meant a court-martial."

"In 1791, the law changed the day of the weekly drills to Saturday. Those who drilled didn't have to go to church on Sunday. But those who attended church services - with their guns - were exempt from drill."

"In a historic decision, the Brazilian Senate has unanimously approved a new bill that bans the carrying of firearms by civilians and severely restricts firearms possession, aiming to reduce the country's dizzying gun violence rates, among the highest in the world. The unanimous vote represents a significant victory over the powerful lobby of the arms industry, which vigorously opposed the bill. In addition, the bill proposes the complete banning of firearms and ammunition sales to civilians, to be decided in a plebiscite vote planned for October 2005. The bill now moves to the Brazilian House of Representatives, where a vote is likely to happen by the end of the month."
