In Virginia, a person isn’t justified for killing someone in your home unless you believe you are in danger of getting attacked or serious bodily injury. “A lot of people who own guns believe they can just shoot anybody who walks into their house without cause,” said Dwain Rodman, the Virginia state representative for U.S. Law Shield.

Signed into law last week by California Governor Jerry Brown, anyone that attempts to create a homemade firearm with technology like a 3D printer will be required to apply for a serial number from the state’s Department of Justice. This new law is also designed to close a loophole that’s allowed gun enthusiasts to sell “unfinished receivers;” items like the core frame of a firearm as well as ammunition feeders and firing pins. |

When Michael Faw, media relations manager for Crimson Trace, called to ask if I’d join him and some other writers on a coyote hunt in Montana, the answer was a no-brainer. We’d be camping out under the Big Sky on some ranch you can’t see the end of, even when you glance at the horizon, near Glasgow, Mont. And we’d be using a new wireless Crimson Trace green laser called the LiNQ attached to Smith & Wesson’s Model M&P15 MOE Mid Magpul Spec Series modern sporting rifle. |

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” There is no reason why ‘shall not’ should be interpreted in any other way. We can even take a look at Thomas Jefferson who makes it downright clear. “The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed,” stated Jefferson in a letter to John Cartwright on June 5, 1824.

Recent letters from Thomas Denton ( July 3: "Banning 'assault weapons' would only be first step") and Phil Gingerella (July 14: "Democrats want to disarm law-abiding citizens") claim that the Founding Fathers' primary purpose in establishing the Second Amendment was to provide the people with the means to protect themselves from a tyrannical government. This is far from accurate.

Michael Wukela says a litany of gun-related statistics for South Carolina add up to one grim conclusion. “We are living in a war zone,” said Wukela, executive director of Progress South. His group helped organize last month’s anti-violence rally at the Statehouse in Columbia after 49 people were fatally shot at an Orlando nightclub. Last Thursday, he took part in a discussion about gun-control issues hosted by the Young Democrats of Anderson County at McGee’s Scot-Irish Pub in downtown Anderson.

While congressional Democrats and Republicans go head-to-head over gun control, proponents of a smaller, often overlooked facet of the Second Amendment’s right to keep and bear arms pursue a battle of their own—the right to carry a knife. Knife Rights, an Arizona-based advocacy group aimed at ridding states of existing bans on specific types of knives, is leading the fight against restrictive knife laws across the U.S.
