"The Senate Tuesday opened debate on a measure to give the U.S. gun industry broad protection from civil lawsuits, a top priority of the gun lobby and an anathema to gun control groups."

"The legislation, which would grant gun makers immunity from most civil liability lawsuits, is likely to pass with support from most Senate Republicans and a number of Democrats from rural or southern states. But gun control advocates hope to attach amendments, possibly including a measure that would impose tighter regulation of sales at gun shows."

"A chapter of Iraq's draft constitution obtained by The Associated Press gives Islam a major role in Iraqi civil law, raising concerns that women could lose rights in marriage, divorce and inheritance."

"The proposal also appears to rule out non-governmental militias, an area addressed Monday by the new U.S. ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad. Urging Iraqis to build national institutions, he said there is no place for factional forces that 'build the infrastructure for a future civil war.'"

While not specifically addressing militias, the draft chapter would permit Iraqis to form only political parties and would ban individuals from possessing weapons.

"Lest gun control advocates dismiss these concerns over the United Nations' effort to undermine our Second Amendment rights as the unfounded fears of an NRA board member (which I am), consider yet another example in which Kofi Annan's bureaucracy is inserting itself into the domestic policies of a member state. The United Nations has determined that efforts by a sovereign nation — in this case, the African country of Zimbabwe — to tear down massive slums in urban areas represents a 'catastrophic injustice' that is tantamount to the worst excesses of bygone colonial eras. ..." ...

"Bans do no good, and in the Columbus PR debacle, it reflects a most immature attitude in failing to make a city business connection between hosting a guest and insulting them and still expecting the insult to have no effect."

"That’s teenage thinking, but there’s nothing new in that among liberals."

"A statement issued today by the White House on a bill that would give unprecedented legal immunity to the most reckless gun sellers in America 'grossly misrepresents the lawsuits targeted by the bill and insults gun violence victims who are seeking justice in our courts,' said Michael D. Barnes, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence."

"The Bush Administration's Office of Management and Budget issued the Statement of Administration Policy this morning, as the Senate began consideration of the legislation. The Senate's Republican leadership chose to shove aside critical Defense Department legislation to bring up the National Rifle Association drafted bill."

"...the Washington Post whined that the proposed Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act would provide an 'unfair and irrational special-interest shield from civil justice.'"

"Many American citizens, and at least one federal grand jury, might argue that a shield law to protect reporters from disclosing sources, even in criminal investigations, is also an unfair and irrational shield for a special-interest, in this case, the press... Yet the Washington Post recently editorialized that 'Almost all states recognize some form of privilege for reporters.' It clearly appears that the Washington Post is quite comfortable with a special privilege for the media industry that it does not care to share with the firearms industry."

"If the NRA and Mr. Frist had had their way, Bull's Eye Shooter Supply, the gun dealer that negligently allowed the Bushmaster rifle to reach the hands of Washington snipers John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo, would not have been successfully sued by families of six victims and the two victims who survived the ambushes. Instead, as part of a settlement, the dealer agreed to pay the families and victims $2.5 million. The GOP leader and the NRA want to shield gun purveyors from that kind of justice. The Senate should say no."

"Two lawsuits against the gun shop that sold the weapon used to kill five employees of a Queens Wendy's in 2000 have been quietly settled, the Daily News has learned."

"Jaquione Johnson, 21, who survived being shot in the head, and the mother of slaying victim Anita Smith, 22, separately sued Atlantic Gun & Tackle of Bedford Heights, Ohio, for negligence. The suits alleged that the gun shop should have known that the woman who purchased the .380-caliber handgun was buying it for her shady boyfriend."

"Word that Johnson's suit had been settled got out when Joan Truman-Smith's lawyer, Elisa Barnes, referred to Johnson's deal in court last month. Attorneys for the gun shop objected and the mention was stricken from the record, but the shop later settled with Truman-Smith. No terms were revealed for either case."

"The TASER X26C has a closer range (max. 15 ft.) than the law enforcement X26 model (max. 25 ft.) to maintain a tactical advantage for law enforcement officers. The X26C also operates at a slightly lower power output than the law enforcement X26."

"Unfortunately, Taser believes that responsible citizens shouldn’t have access to the technology that law enforcement uses. The X26C - the “citizen” version - has a range that’s 10' shorter than the 25' range of the X26, and is less-powerful. I guess that means... that your life is only 60% as valuable as that of a police officer."

"Why should ordinary citizens pay $1000 for a tool that no self-respecting police officer would consider using? For $500, you or I can purchase a Glock handgun, chambered for the same rounds as Officer Friendly’s gun. You and I will show statistically more accurate results. In fact, according to Cramer and Kopel (1994), police accidentally kill innocent people in 11% of shootings... only 2% for citizens!"

"When an armed and suicidal city man barricaded himself in his home in May, city police stood ready with hands on .40-caliber Smith & Wesson sidearms."

"But it was a jolt of electricity fired through a window -- not a bullet -- that ended the standoff without the use of deadly force."

"The incident was one of four in May in which city police used the Taser. It was an anomaly, Norwich Police Sgt. Christopher Ferace said. The department, he said, has shot one of the two devices in use only a half-dozen times during the year and a half of use."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American... The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state government, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people. — Tench Coxe, Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788.
