When Pittsburgh police officers seize guns, they usually aren’t taking the firearms from their lawful owners, according to a new study. The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health analyzed 762 cases from 2008 in which a gun was recovered by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Firearm Tracking Unit. Nearly 80 percent of suspects carrying a gun recovered by city police hadn’t legally purchased the firearm, researchers found.

A 37-year-old man is unhurt after shooting his way out of an attempted carjacking on Detroit’s west side late Monday night, police said.
The man was approached by two male suspects in a dark-colored Chevy Impala, said Officer Nicole Kirkwood of the Detroit Police Department. One of the men was armed.
When the Impala pulled up to the man on the 16800 block of Rutherford, the armed man allegedly pulled out his gun and told the victim to exit his vehicle, Kirkwood said.
The victim complied, but had a gun of his own. The alleged victim, who Kirkwood said has a concealed pistol license, and the other man exchanged gunfire, and the suspect took a gunshot wound to the body. He got back in the Impala and was taken to an area hospital.

In a matter of seconds, the life of a Payson man ended in October in the Home Depot parking lot when he faced a man having an affair with his daughter. We don’t know why Roger Annabel decided to confront Robert Schmidt that afternoon, but we know Schmidt felt threatened — so he fired. Three times.

Picking a new president is far from the only question facing voters in November. Nevadans will have a say on several issues that will shape our state's future, including background checks on private gun sales. Question 1 is a statewide ballot measure that, if passed, would require an unlicensed seller who wants to sell or transfer a firearm to go through a federally licensed gun dealer. |

On April 16, 2007, Seung-Hui Cho opened fire with a handgun on gun-free zone Virginia Tech University, killing 32 unarmed innocents. Less than a year later, in March 2008, Governor Tim Kaine (D) vetoed a bill intended to mitigate the chances of such a slaughter reoccurring by allowing Virginians to keep a loaded gun in their car for self-defense.

When it comes to gun safety, there is usually a fault-line between Democrats and Republicans. That is not really the case in Kentucky. In urban areas like Louisville, there is a lot of support for gun control. You could say the real divide in Kentucky is urban versus rural, not Democrat versus Republican. |

There’s an easy case to be made that any activity that has been going on for a quarter-century—and grown in 22 of those 25 years—must be doing something right. In this particular case, there are quite a few “somethings,” we think, and it sure helps that each and every one arrives in unimpeachable Second Amendment style. Despite not being in agreement, the Kalamazoo Township board will consider a change in park rules that will allow guns along county-owned trails in the township. The rules would still ban bows and arrows, paintball guns and pellet guns without special permission, but because of state law, the township doesn't have the authority to also ban guns, which prompted surprise from more than one trustee.
