Shut Your Loophole

"Add loophole to the list of words that should be banned from journalism." ...

"It's a loaded, partisan word, one that implies wrongdoing and scandal where none exists, and inserting it into a political argument gives the inserter the upper hand. When loophole creeps into news stories, they start to read like editorials."

"For these obvious reasons, news reporters should keep their stories and headlines loophole-free. But they don't. In the past six months, the news pages of the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the Boston Globe, the Washington Times, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal have published at least 45 stories with the nasty word in the headline." ...

Contemplating the Crossdraw

"The dream was one of those rare ones, the kind you remember vividly when you wake up. I'd somehow arrived in Haiti--Port-au-Prince to be exact. I was armed with a Colt single-action .45 revolver and was having to fight my way to a sporting goods store, having to deal with a number of ruffians. Upon making it safely to the establishment, I found an elaborate setup. It was the nicest sporting goods store I'd ever seen. Fine antique rifles and shotguns lined the walls. I went directly to the holster section and found a number of brands, but they were all crossdraw. I was informed that crossdraw was the favored carry method in Haiti." ...

"In June, in the wake of the Virginia Tech mass shooting, newspapers across the country hailed a 'compromise' bill that would supposedly increase the number of records submitted to [NICS] ... a bill introduced earlier this year by gun control advocate Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) to improve the NICS was modified at the last minute and passed by the House with much fanfare and little outside analysis." ...

"... a closer look at the NRA-added sections raises strong concerns. So strong, that yesterday three national gun violence prevention organizations -- the Violence Policy Center (which I head), the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and the Legal Community Against Violence -- issued a press release voicing them. ..." ...

"This upcoming weekend, employees of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle will quietly commemorate the one-year anniversary of the shooting at its downtown office building."

"For Seattle’s Jewish community, July 28, 2006 was a traumatizing introduction to gun violence ... In a year scarred again and again by the indiscriminate murder of innocent people at the hands of men with guns, the shooting linked Seattle’s Jews to other victimized communities. From the Capitol Hill Massacre to the murder of young Amish schoolchildren to the rampage at Virginia Tech, America’s senseless tolerance of guns was on full display. Taken together, the bloodbaths should have provided a timeline of evidence that our nation’s gun laws need to change — fast." ...

"For only $25, Republican party members attending a Manchester, New Hampshire, fundraiser scheduled for next month will get to spend the day on a firing range with some heavy-duty fire power, using some of the same machine guns as US troops fighting in Iraq."

"... But despite Manchester Republican Committee chairman Jerry Thibodeau's best efforts, no 2008 GOP presidential candidates will be in attendance."

"However, the campaign of one of the most pro-gun control Republican candidates left open the possibility that Rudy Giuliani might have attended the fundraiser, had its date not conflicted with a presidential candidates' debate in Iowa. ABC News is hosting a debate among all nine Republican candidates in Des Moines." ...

"Perhaps I expected too much. I had hoped they would be on their best behavior, but no."

"What am I lamenting? The shoddy treatment given to the American gun owner in the last Democrat Presidential debate, that’s what."

"I am sadly not surprised by how us gun owners were dealt with as I watched the CNN-hosted YouTube Democrat debate. I will grant that Jered Townsend did not present himself very well, as he held his Bushmaster XM-15 rifle asking about the intent of the Democrats towards his 'baby'. But what followed should have been illustrative to any gun owner watching the debate about how they should vote in the primaries and in November next year." ...

"We're so lucky to be the state that gave Mitt Romney presidential credibility. Now he can spread the values of Massachusetts — like glamorizing automatic weapons — to the rest of the country. Why, just the other day he said he sees no problem with guests at a Republican fundraiser in Manchester, N.H., shooting off Uzis and M-16 rifles for entertainment. Naturally, he still supports an automatic weapons ban, but why should that be a conflict? After all, inviting people to shoot high-powered guns for fun isn't the same as allowing them to own the guns, as Mr. Romney explained." ...

"A few raised moral objections, saying they would not support a fundraiser that packs a pro-gun message."
