"Writing for the Los Angeles Times, author Sonia Wolff described her experience of she and her husband becoming gun owners. In my doorstep edition this morning it is Reluctantly packing heat. In the online edition, it is The reluctant gun owner. It's a wonderful piece... The essay, not the revolver they looked at."
"One of the most important observations Sonia makes it this: 'We should have a pistol,' I finally declared. 'Something I can use.' Still, I wrestled with the idea of whether I could become someone else, someone capable of violence. Was I really prepared to kill someone who threatened my property or my life?"

"A handgun is not a shotgun. A handgun doesn't fire as much lead as a shotgun. A handgun is harder to aim than a shotgun. Provided the shotgun in question is loaded with double ought buck and fired from a relatively close distance, the disparity in lethality is so great that many security experts pose the following question: what's the main purpose of a home defense handgun? To fight your way to your shotgun. This much is true: if you're trying to stop someone from killing yourself or your loved ones using a handgun, you’re going to need to pull the trigger more than once. Submitter's Note: Okay, you've read the Constitution, now read Justice John Paul Stevens' dissent (in which he was joined by the rest of the minority Justices). "A Wednesday night hearing at City Hall focused on police officers and their conduct, including when they are off duty."
"The meeting was held in the wake of an incident in which an off-duty officer was charged with fatally shooting a former Marine."
"11 News reporter Kai Reed said the hearing was strictly informational and was considered an opportunity for City Council members to ask questions about department policies."
"Many of the questions, Reed reported, focused on the general discipline of officers involved in off-duty incidents."
"The June shooting of a Marine by Officer Gahiji Tshamba -- who was later charged with murder -- wasn't directly discussed at the meeting. |

"Mexico likes to blame its gun violence on the US, and gun-control advocates love to repeat the canard that 90% the weapons in Mexico come from the US. (It’s actually less than 20%; more of them come from Mexican Army deserters.) They’ll have a little more trouble with that argument after this weekend. Mexico discovered that the perpetrators of several massacres are now behind bars, and were behind bars before the massacres — before prison guards let them out and armed them for their murderous rampages:" ... |

"Criminals will be deprived of their 'weapon of choice' by a proposed law change, Police Minister Judith Collins says."
"Collins yesterday announced high-powered airguns would be reclassified so they could only be owned by those with a firearms licence."
"The proposed change could be implemented by November through an amendment to the Arms Order."
"However, Collins said there were no plans to try to register all firearms, something that had been an 'expensive failure' in other countries."
"In 2008, undercover police officer Sergeant Don Wilkinson was killed by a high-powered airgun."
"Police said 44-year-old Aucklander Keith Kahi was also killed by an airgun this month." ... -------
