"On Tuesday, the Senate is scheduled to begin consideration of legislation to limit class action lawsuits -- a prime candidate for so-called liberal 'killer amendments,' including the Feinstein amendment to extend the ban on semiautomatic firearms and magazines."
"Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has threatened to offer her semi-auto ban to any 'appropriate' legislative vehicle, and the class action bill is about as 'appropriate' as any on the Senate's legislative schedule."
"Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) has, at his disposal, a variety of parliamentary techniques to prevent Feinstein from offering the semiautomatic ban. Back in March, he chose NOT to use these parliamentary maneuvers during the debacle over the ill-fated gun makers' protection act."
"The debate over this pro-gun bill resulted in a free-for-all which led to killer amendments being added to the bill -- amendments like the Feinstein gun ban."
"GOA is urging Frist to learn from his mistakes and to use his leadership office to insure that the Feinstein amendment is not offered to S. 2062." |

This is what's called "Gun Control Run Amok"
------- "U.S. Marines won't be allowed to fire a traditional gun salute at the graveside of a Mexican-American killed in Iraq, Mexican officials said Thursday, citing the country's laws against foreigners carrying firearms."
"Lance Cpl. Juan Lopez, who was born in the central Mexico state of Guanajuato and resided in Dalton, Ga., was one of four U.S. Marines killed in an ambush in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, on June 21."
"After family members elected to bury Lopez in Guanajuato, U.S. Marines made arrangements to give him a traditional 21-gun salute during the funeral ceremony, said Maj. Curt Gwilliam of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City."
"But Mexico's Secretary of Defense turned down the request, saying the salute violated constitutional measures preventing foreign soldiers from bearing arms on Mexican soil." |

"There is absolutely no good reason any American civilian needs access to such weapons, whose high ammunition capacity and rapid-fire action are designed for use by troops in combat. Assault weapons are not hunting rifles." ...
"Data shows that the incidence of crimes committed with assault weapons declined significantly over the last decade as criminals' access to these weapons was reduced."
------- KABA Note #1: It's a bill of rights, not a bill of needs.
KABA Note #2: The Bill of Rights doesn't specify the right to keep and bear arms as being for the purpose of hunting. As a matter of fact, hunting is never mentioned.
KABA Note #3: Actually, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, crimes committed with so-called "assault weapons" actually increased after the ban was implemented. In 1991, 8 percent of criminals admitted to having owned a military-style rifle. Less than 1 percent had used it in the commission of their crime.
In 2001, the Bureau of Justice Statistics revealed that about 2 percent of inmates had a military-style weapon during the commission of their crime.

"How these weapons, developed for the military and capable of inflicting terrible carnage on humans, became available for sale to the general population is mind boggling."
"Equally appalling is the possibility that the hard-working men and women in law enforcement could once again face military-style weapons out on the streets if the ban is not renewed by Congress."

Gov. Mitt Romney signed into law yesterday a permanent state ban on assault weapons. The new bill extends a 1998 law - outlawing such weapons as AK-47s, UZIs and Mac-10 rifles - due to expire in September when the federal ban runs out. The law creates a review panel to re-evaluate applications from those denied gun licenses due to "youthful indiscretions," and grants a 90-day grace period for license renewal. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise, and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walks. — Thomas Jefferson, Encyclopedia of T. Jefferson, 318, Foley, Ed., reissued 1967. |
