The largest wildfire burning in Arizona was started during a bachelor party when one shotgun-toting celebrant fired a shell that promises to shoot “100 feet of fire, setting everything in its path ablaze,” The Smoking Gun has learned.
The Sunflower Fire--which has burned nearly 18,000 acres of the Tonto National Forest and is not fully contained -- began in mid-May after five Arizona men gathered to celebrate the upcoming May 19 nuptials of Bryan Reeder. The group -- all in their mid-20s -- traveled from Mesa to the Sycamore Creek area for a weekend “campout and bachelor party,” according to court records.

Here's what needs to be asked after every shooting in Bridgeport: Where did the gun come from? That's what Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said the other day at yet another community meeting in his city to address what the mayor calls the "disease" of gun violence, and he's absolutely right. Within the overall context of gun violence in Connecticut's cities -- including Stamford, where guns are fired on the streets with regularity -- is the urgent issue of the pool of young men who are likely to be at one or the other end of the gun.

Across the nation footage from red-light traffic cameras have been used by police to solve crimes, but the footage is banned from police use in Washington state. The King County prosecutor wants the Legislature to reconsider the 2005 law.

Could images from red-light cameras have led Seattle police to a pair of killers?

The ubiquitous cameras are mounted a short distance from the Pioneer Square intersection where Nicole Westbrook, 21, was fatally shot in April by a gunman in a passing car. Other cameras are in the Central Area, not too far from where Justin Ferrari, 43, was killed while driving with his family about a month later.

Detectives wonder if the cameras may have captured images — a fleeing car or a gunman's clothing, for

U.S. Secret Service officers shut down a student-led protest calling for President Obama to fire Attorney General Eric Holder this morning, according to a report from in front of the White House.
After discovering a “suspicious package,” the Secret Service ended the protest. “Several agents seemed hostile to our march and seemed anxious for us to leave the area,” Maurice Lewis, a University of California student, told Campus Reform. “The discover[y of] the ‘unidentified package’ came just as the protest began gain traction.”

The drone industry on Monday unveiled its first-ever “code of conduct” policy, designed to protect the privacy of those on the ground and ensure the sector adheres to safety standards as the popularity and usage of unmanned aerial vehicles continue to grow.

Released by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International, the guidelines focus on three principals: safety, professionalism and respect. They include promises that the industry will properly test all drones before flight, comply with all laws governing aircraft, respect the privacy of individuals and work to better educate the public.

A federal judge has permanently blocked a Florida law barring doctors from asking their patients about gun ownership, ruling the law unconstitutionally violates physicians’ freedom of speech. U.S. District Judge Marcia Cooke issued a permanent injunction Friday that barred the law from going into effect and rejected the state’s argument that the law was aimed at protecting gun owners from discrimination. Cooke had temporarily put the law on hold last year, after three groups of doctors sued Gov. Rick Scott within days after he signed the National Rifle Association-backed bill passed by the GOP-dominated legislature.

A passenger on a TriMet bus is under arrest after TriMet officials said the man attacked a bus driver on Wednesday. Other passengers on the bus jumped in to help the driver, TriMet said.

TriMet officials said Thomas Dunford boarded the No. 9 bus at SE Powell Boulevard and Milwaukie Avenue in Southeast Portland at around 4:45 p.m. and became irate and started yelling when asked for his fare.

Witnesses told transit police the unidentified female bus driver didn't do anything to provoke Dunford, who officials said punched the driver in the shoulder so hard she was unable to continue driving.

Dunford was subdued by two other people on the bus, Trimet officials said. The good Samaritans kept Dunford restrained until transit police arri

Second Amendment, Schmecond Amendment. Google wants you to know that it is thinking of your “safety” as it announces that it has banned anything to do with firearms on its Google Shopping service. That’s what they’ve told HamLund Tactical, a Texas-based company that deals in ammunition and firearms accessories, anyway. Further, firearms customers have recently found that Google Shopping won’t give them any search results for firearm-related products anymore even though the change over isn’t supposed to fully take effect until July 1.

Sen. Richard Burr, R-NC, and Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., have again co-sponsored the Veterans Second Amendment Protection Act, a bill that will allow veterans to legally designate another person to handle their finances without being barred from owning firearms.

Right now, if a veteran legally designates another person to handle his or her affairs -- a standard bureaucratic procedure done by many veterans for many reasons -- the Department of Veterans Affairs classifies the veteran as "incapacitated" and notifies the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS.

The most recent examples of these erosions are the Stand Your Ground Law....

A stand-your-ground law states that a person may use force in self-defense when there is reasonable belief of a threat, without an obligation to retreat first. More than half of states in the United States have adopted the Castle doctrine, stating that a person has no duty to retreat when their home is attacked. The stand-your-ground law allows for a person to use deadly force when faced with a perceived threat, with no obligation to retreat when they are away from their home, even in public spaces. The Treyvon Martin case is the most recent example of how this law is a threat to the civil rights and civil liberties of innocent individuals.

Alameda County may have shot itself in the foot, according to a trio of would-be gun dealers denied a chance to open a gun shop in San Lorenzo.

Backed by gun lobbying groups, the disgruntled combo has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit alleging Alameda County changed zoning laws at will to prevent their gun shop from opening.

John Teixeira, Steve Nobriga and Gary Gamaza said they had already converted a store after complying with the city’s regulations that it be built 500 feet from the nearest home, liquor store or school.

Some 130 lawmakers sent President Obama a letter on Monday expressing their opposition to a pending arms trade treaty if it impinges on gun rights and U.S. sovereignty in any way.

The United Nations this week begins a month-long process of crafting a long-delayed treaty to create international standards for importing and exporting conventional weapons. Proponents say the treaty would bring much of the rest of the world in line with U.S. standards without affecting domestic sales, but gun enthusiasts are worried.

The governor's announcement came after a 1½-hour, closed-door meeting with legislative leaders and a number of attorneys over whether a special session was needed to put a stop to target shooting in the wake of hundreds of fires.

The latest attempt by the U.N. and global gun banners to eliminate our Second Amendment freedoms is to include civilian arms in the current Arms Trade Treaty, the language of which will be finalized next month.

Conservatives still reeling from Chief Justice John Roberts's decision to uphold the 2,700-page ObamaCare legislation as a Federal tax are rightly worried that Roberts opened the door to unlimited Federal coercion of the American public through the tax code.

...

This is not a new idea; it is an old one. The New York Times reported in 1993 that the late Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan (D-NY) proposed adding a 10,000% Federal tax to 9mm handgun ammunition as part of "HillaryCare." Yes, you read that correctly; it is not a typo. Ten thousand percent. Did John Roberts just open the door for a future Democratic Congress to actually enact such a tax as part of ObamaCare?

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and other officials reversed themselves Monday and declared the state had the power to restrict gun use on tinder-dry public lands in the wake of another wildfire sparked by target shooting.

Herbert and legislative leaders appeared jointly to announce that they were empowering state forester Dick Buehler to impose firearms restrictions outside of cities and towns where the fire danger is extreme. No immediate restrictions went into place.
