Legionnaire and retired Master Chief Dan Hackstein has been coaching air rifle for 18 years. As the coach for Zion-Benton JROTC in Zion, Ill., Hackstein has brought youth marksmen to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the past 10 to 12 years to compete in The American Legion’s Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championship. His two athletes that qualified for the national competition in sporter are in the top eight, advancing to The American Legion air rifle finals.

A gun fight broke out in a San Antonio home when burglary suspects reportedly tried to rob the house at gunpoint and a resident responded with gunfire.
One of the suspects was hit during the incident and fled the scene in a car. The other suspect fled on foot.
The suspect who was injured was found at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio and transferred to the University Hospital in critical condition. |

North Dakota teams claimed several top team honors and individual national champion awards at the 4-H National Shooting Sports Championships held recently in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Teams competed in four disciplines: smallbore rifle, shotgun, compound archery and hunting skills. Teams consisted of three or four members from one or more counties in each state. Teams were determined by qualifying in a 4-H shooting sports state match.
The national competition consisted of three events for each discipline, with one event completed each day of the competition. Individual and team awards were given daily for each event, with an overall cumulative match award at the end of the week of events. |

If there was any doubt that President Joe Biden wants to ban the vast majority of guns in the United States, he again clarified his position last week. “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon – whether it’s a – whether it’s a 9-millimeter pistol or whether it’s a rifle – is ridiculous,” Biden said at a televised CNN townhall meeting. “I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things, but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term.” |

The categorical ban that prohibits immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally from possessing guns doesn’t violate the Second Amendment, the Second Circuit said Thursday.
The federal law is rationally related to protecting public safety, the opinion by Judge John M. Walker Jr. said.

A prank war in one North Carolina town has prompted warnings from local authorities about the potentially deadly consequences after several people called the police.
The Roxboro Police Department responded to several reports of people pointing what look like real guns at drivers and other people as part of a “gun prank war,” according to a post on the department’s Facebook page. The warning has been shared over 900 times since it was posted just before 7 p.m. on Monday. |

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) needs to change its name. At this point, it’s false advertising.
The ACLU recently argued that “anti-Blackness determined the inclusion of the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights, and has informed the unequal and racist application of gun laws.” That’s plainly arguing that the Second Amendment was included in the Bill of Rights as a tool of racist control of slaves. The posting by communications intern Ines Santos was an introduction to a podcast that included opinions from several professors who wholeheartedly agree the Second Amendment is racist and is a tool to deny civil rights to African-Americans. |

The Pima County attorney’s office has declined to charge a man involved in a fatal shooting stemming from a road rage incident five months ago.
Prosecutors said David Rivera, 31, will not be charged because the incident falls under self-defense statutes. The prosecutors are legally and ethically not able to seek charges where self-defense is claimed, and if facts support the claim. |

We report on many defensive gun use stories here. Many of them could have been avoided simply by not confronting the other party. That includes going outside to investigate a noise. Or, like this story, tracking down a car thief yourself instead of calling the police.
A Dallas man had his car stolen on Tuesday earlier this week. He was able to track and locate the vehicle, which he found parked outside of a restaurant.
The vehicle owner confronted the suspect, which escalated into a verbal argument which then escalated into the suspect trying to ram the owner’s other vehicle, which then escalated into the owner shooting the suspect in self-defense. |

Gun shows are safe, appropriate events that frequently take place across California. Yet many gun control advocates cite dubious statistics about gun shows to justify support for legislation to end gun shows on state property, such as fairgrounds.
Some would have you believe that California gun shows are lawless events where vendors sell guns to violent gangs or without paperwork. Nothing could be further from the truth: California gun shows are more highly regulated than brick-and-mortar gun shops. |

U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming filed a court brief with 24 of her Senate colleagues defending the constitutional right to carry firearms outside one’s home. According to a media release from the Senator’s office, the amicus – or friend of the court – brief was filed in a case before the U.S. Supreme Court, New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. Lummis and her colleagues argue that New York laws that make it extremely difficult to carry a firearm outside the home violate the Second Amendment’s guarantee of the right to bear arms. |

But Missouri’s “sanctuary” law takes matters a few steps further. Unlike similar bills passed this year in Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Texas, the Missouri law empowers the state’s residents to sue for $50,000 state and local police that violate it (for example, by confiscating an assault weapon under a hypothetical federal ban). This last provision in particular raises serious questions about whether the Second Amendment Preservation Act will hold up in court. The Biden Justice Department has already declared it unconstitutional. |

A three-judge panel in the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled earlier this month that the ban on retail handgun sales to young adults under age 21 was unconstitutional.
At the heart of this case is a lesson for people who sit out their voting responsibility. Elections matter, something CNN and Roll Call were quick to point out without intending to.
The majority opinion was written by Judge Julius N. Richardson, who was appointed to the court by Donald Trump. He was joined by Judge G. Steven Agee, a George W. Bush appointee.
Dissenting was Judge James A. Wynn, who was appointed by Barack Obama. Judge Wynn wrote something that clearly revealed more about his political leanings than it probably should have. |

Amid a surge in shootings this year, a majority of California voters say that they believe gun control laws are effective in reducing violent crime, but confidence in them has slipped, according to a new University of California, Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Times.
The poll released Thursday found that 56% of the state's voters surveyed believe stronger laws restricting the sale and possession of guns help make their communities safer, but the number is down from 60% who felt that way three years ago. |

On August 1, North Dakotans will officially be able to use deadly force against intruders without first retreating.
There is a pretty controversial law going into effect this Sunday. On August 1, North Dakotans will no longer legally have to attempt to retreat before resorting to deadly force during an intrusion. There is the excitement that people can protect themselves by any means necessary. But there is also a fear that people may become "trigger happy."
