"With all the attention that's been paid lately to long federal sentences for drug offenders, it's surprising that a far more troubling phenomenon has barely hit the media's radar screen. Every year, thousands of upstanding, responsible Americans run afoul of some incomprehensible federal law or regulation and end up serving time in federal prison."
"What is especially disturbing is that it could happen to anyone at all -- and it has."
"We should applaud Reps. Bobby Scott (D-Va.) and Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), then, for holding a bipartisan hearing today to examine how federal law can make a criminal out of anyone, for even the most mundane conduct." ... |

"[S]ay something compels you to claim your luggage at a layover airport: perhaps your flight was rerouted, or perhaps there was a delay and they're going to shuttle you to a hotel or an alternate terminal... Don't assume it's safe to claim your suitcase. That could put you in a world of hurt."

I see Sen. Rockefeller has once again ignored his constituency by voting "what's in their best interest" (his words on gun bans) against an amendment allowing legal concealed carry permit-holders to cross state lines and continue to carry their weapons conveniently. Mr. Byrd, by the way, took the easy way out and did not vote on the issue.
Many states now have reciprocity laws that allow this, as does West Virginia. Good citizens should be allowed to protect themselves and their families. It looks as though our senators want only criminals to carry firearms.
