Milton Friedman is the Godfather of American conservative libertarianism. He was, at a time when it was deeply unfashionable in official circles, a fierce critic of Keynesian economics. He was a leader of the second generation of libertarian economists to come out of the University of Chicago. Among the people recruited or mentored by him at the university include Thomas Sowell, Gary Becker, Robert Fogel and Robert Lucas, Jr. Friedman often used the jargon and methodology of Keynesians while rejecting their basic premises, coming to very different conclusions than his Keynesian counterparts.

The San Diego City Council today formally approved an ordinance requiring gun owners to store their weapons in a locked container or disable them with a trigger lock when not in use or being worn on their person. City Attorney Mara Elliott proposed the ordinance last month with the intention of reducing accidental shootings, children's access to guns and suicides. According to Elliott, 46% of gun owners in the U.S. who have children do not secure their guns and 73% of youngsters aged 9 and under know where their parents keep their guns. |

When you are judging a public official on Second Amendment issues, the general rule of thumb is that the longer their track record, the more certain you can be. Granted, there can be sudden defections (see Bob Casey as a case in point), but usually, the longer the track record, the better idea you have of where a politician comes down. |

Sen. Chris Murphy voiced his concern that recently appointed Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch will prevent guns from being regulated because of their "radical view of the Second Amendment." "One of the reasons that I voted against Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court is that he very likely holds an absolutely radical view of the Second Amendment. We can get into a long discussion about what the Second Amendment is really about, but there’s no doubt in my mind that even if it does allow for the private right of gun ownership, it allows for Congress to regulate that right," Murphy told CNN on Tuesday. |

A federal judge on Monday upheld New Jersey's law that lowers the number of bullets a gun can hold, dismissing a lawsuit filed by a gun rights group. New Jersey passed a law last year that made it unlawful to possess firearm magazines holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, with some exceptions. The state has said that's enough for self-defense and that anything more could prove dangerous to bystanders. A 15-round limit had been in place since 1990. |

With the constant calls from anti-Second Amendment groups and politicians to make background checks mandatory for firearm purchases at gun shows, you’d think gun shows and private sales between individuals were a major source of the firearms used by violent criminals. After all, anti-gunners always claim that their various “universal-background-check” schemes are for public safety and will prevent dangerous people from getting guns. |

It’s been said that rights cannot be granted; they can only be taken away. For many gun owners, the National Rifle Association is their proxy for protecting those rights. As for myself, I thought the NRA would always be there as a sort of embodiment of the 2nd Amendment. After all, the NRA is the whipping boy of anti-gun radicals and politicians, often named as a scapegoat in situations the organization has nothing to do with. I assumed the NRA’s strident counter-advertising and well-funded status meant all was well and good, while I went about life in my little corner of the gun world silently supporting a different national organization that I feel does a better job representing me. |

The candidates spent precious minutes talking about their gun-related proposals during the first round of debates. Gun control groups spent big — and won big — in the 2018 midterms, including in a few key races that helped Democrats retake control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout the 2020 campaign, Guns & America will be tracking policy proposals made by candidates for president. |

July 23 was the kind of muggy midsummer’s evening where school is the farthest thing from most people’s minds — a distant obligation that comes after the vacations, barbecues and long days off. But in Lander, as more than 100 people filed into the high school auditorium for a meeting of the Fremont County School District #1 Board of Trustees, it was clear that the school system weighed heavily on the thoughts of this community.

New York has banned the manufacture, sale or possession of 3D-printed guns and other types of undetectable firearms under a measure signed into law by the state’s Democratic governor. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday also signed new rules for the safe storage of firearms in homes with children. The new rules require guns to be locked in secure storage or made harmless with a trigger lock if anyone under 16 could access the weapon. Exceptions will be made for teens with licenses to hunt or use a firearm.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody stuck to her guns on Tuesday, doubling down on her assertion that an effort to get a state assault weapons ban on the 2020 ballot is misleading to voters. “Regardless of your position on gun restrictions, this particular amendment is a trick,” Moody said, speaking in Tampa on Tuesday. “By using the term ‘assault weapons’ and making the definition so broad that it would include most common hunting rifles and shotguns and those that could include rounds that were much less than what was listed in the petition highlights why it is a trick.” |

A small town gun shop in western North Carolina has drawn the ire of liberals and gun control advocates alike after it erected a billboard featuring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and three other liberal congresswomen with the slogan: "The 4 Horseman are Idiots." The sign, which advertises Cherokee Guns in Murphy, started getting attention on Sunday, when the store posted a photo on Facebook saying only "Share." A local gun shop is looking at ways to keep college campuses more safe by providing lockers for firearms. Top Guns has installed multiple lockers inside of their facility. The idea is that students will leave their firearms in the locker rather than bring them on campus. Far too often we see incidents where access to a gun without proper training may be a threat to a person or those around them. It's one of the many reasons that inspired Top Guns to provide these safety lockers to students. |

The printed version of the 2019-20 Iowa Hunting, Trapping and Migratory Game Bird Regulations unintentionally omitted the language from a new state law that allows hunters with a non-ambulatory deer license to hunt during any open season until the license is filled, using the method of take allowed for that season. The error was discovered too late for the print edition. It has been corrected in the online copy available at iowadnr.gov/Hunting/Hunting-Licenses-Laws. |
