On July 27, 2023, the Attorney General of the Biden Administration, Merrick B. Garland, applied for a stay to Justice Alito at the Supreme Court in the case of VanDerStok v. Garland. The request for an emergency stay had been refused by a three-judge panel of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on July 24, 2023, as reported on AmmoLand. One of the possibilities mentioned was the Biden administration would appeal directly to the Supreme Court.

As a staunch gun-rights supporter, I’ve often wondered over the years whether those anti-gunners fighting so hard to curtail the rights of law-abiding Americans really believe in their cause. After all, they have access to the same information we do that proves that armed citizens save lives and that criminals are responsible for violent crime—not the guns they often use in commission of those crimes. |

Rewind the clock thirty years, and a optically sighted rifle was a rare thing indeed. However, the shrinking cost of producing rugged reliabile electronics and the availability of high-quality optical glass means that a quality optic is within just about everybody's price range. Add in the flat-top A2 upper receiver and the standardization of the Picatinny mount, and all of a sudden adding a optical sight to your rifle makes a lot of sense, for not a lot of cents.

A report from the Washington Examiner claims upwards of 60 percent of Americans may be gun owners, an increase of approximately 25 percent over numbers widely reported heretofore.
The Examiner’s report is based on Rutgers University’s New Jersey Gun Violence Research Center, which shows that perhaps as many as half of survey respondents who deny gun ownership may actually be gun owners. |

When shooters hear the words “guide gun, big game, and lever action rifles” used in the same sentence, most will immediately think of the 45-70 Government. And for good reason too, as the 45-70 was one of the cartridges that won the West and can take down virtually any North American game animal.

While overshadowed by striker-fired handguns, hammer-fired polymer guns maintain a strong niche in the market. Taurus’ TH line is a good example, with compact and full-size models offered in 9 mm Luger and .40 S&W. For 2023, Taurus is expanding its hammer-fired offerings with the .45 ACP-chambered TH45. |

Test anxiety is a bummer; and, although that term may make you think of high school days, it also applies to situations beyond those involving pen and paper. Many states require some form of live-fire qualification before allowing you to carry a gun, as does nearly every law-enforcement entity. While such courses of fire will vary in round count and allowable firearms, almost all share the common ground of varying distances, and that is the core of this routine. Familiarity is the natural enemy of anxiety, so use this drill to take the fear out of test day—or to assess your own skills anytime. |

Fox News is reporting that the Biden administration is “blocking key funding” to elementary and secondary schools if they have hunting and archery programs, and gun rights and outdoor groups are fuming.
According to the report, the funding in question is earmarked under a program called the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965. But there’s a problem, thanks to President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) passed last year in the aftermath of the Uvalde, Texas school shooting. Allegedly, schools with hunting and/or archery classes “are precluded from receiving federal funding,” according to Fox. |

The Supreme Court’s ruling in NYSRPA v. Bruen threw the political project of gun regulation into question. Before Bruen, states could enact new kinds of gun restrictions if they passed a relatively stringent means-ends test. That is, if laws meaningfully reduced danger, while not too heavily burdening the right to self-defense, they were allowed. After Bruen, only gun controls actually in force in the founding era, and their close analogues, are permissible. Many fewer regulations will now pass the constitutional test. |

Alaska Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy on Saturday signed into law a measure that seeks to block state and local officials from closing gun stores during disasters declared by the governor, unless such closures apply to all other businesses. Regarded as a win for Second Amendment supporters and Alaska residents, House Bill 61 — which was championed by Republican House Speaker Cathy Tilton and backed by the NRA — came in response to business closures in Alaska and other states during the coronavirus pandemic and protects a plethora of firearm businesses throughout the state.
