Dick Lugar (R-IN) and Barack Obama (D-IL) to expand the cooperative threat reduction concept to conventional weapons." ...
"... The Lugar-Obama bill will build on this success by helping other nations find and eliminate conventional weapons that have been used against our own soldiers in Iraq and sought by terrorists all over the world,' said Obama."

... "The United Nations has been promoting world-wide civilian disarmament since the 1990s. Their professed goals are encapsulated in the reference above: guns kill people, therefore the people should not have access to guns. If all guns were restricted from civilian access, would this halt the international arms trade, thus eliminating criminal access and reducing crime as well? Most importantly, is it really true that civilian firearms are the biggest threat to our global safety and security?"
"Deciding their government could not protect them, the Brazilian people recently rejected the proposal to ban civilian firearms in their country:" ... |

"Mayor Michael Bloomberg has declared war on the illegal gun trade that has most recently caused so much grief in New York City. Handgun murders -- even on Staten Island -- have increased slightly over last year, but any upward trend, no matter how small, is reason for if not alarm, at least an increase in counter measures."
"Mr. Bloomberg has been joined by an impressive number of other mayors, who are also concerned about the movement of illegal weapons across state lines and the carnage that has resulted."
"This campaign is a good thing, especially in light of recent news reports concerning the innovative -- but no less deadly -- weapons that have begun to turn up on our city's streets." ... |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823] |
