Three Maine lawmakers are asking a Kittery store to stop selling assault-style rifles. The Democratic lawmakers wrote a letter to Kittery Trading Post, asking the store to restrict gun sales and to discontinue sales of what the lawmakers said are assault-style rifles. The letter was written by Deane Rykerson, Lydia Blume, and Patty Hymanson — who represent York and Kittery — alongside others from Maine and New Hampshire. "Your store to us has been a symbol of a good business that is involved in the community and the area in which it does business," said the lawmakers in the letter. |

As predicted last Friday in an account of a draft report, the Hutchinson-appointed School Safety Commission put an armed person at every school at the top of its recommendations. The governor had a press event today to praise the fine work of his appointees. He insisted there'd be no unfunded mandates on school districts. (I wondered if that included his promise to raise beginning teacher pay? Will the state finance that, too?) |

Sales of firearms totaled 2.8 million units in the first half of 2018, down 1.6 percent compared to the same period a year ago, according to SGB Media’s sister company SSI Data. In dollars, sales are down 4.9 percent.

The state’s highest court bucked Missouri’s captive deer hunting industry Tuesday, saying the state government has a right to regulate the companies in order to control a deadly brain disease affecting the animals. The case involved the owners of hunting preserves who challenged regulations imposed by the Missouri Department of Conservation in 2014 that attempted to crack down on the spread of chronic wasting disease by limiting the importation of deer and elk into the state. |

Hornady, long famous for its line of excellent component bullets, has garnered an equally strong reputation for its line of loaded ammunition, which expanded with the relaunch of the Hornady Frontier Ammunition brand. I say relaunch, because I remember my first experience with Hornady ammunition: it was a couple decades ago, I had just bought my first .300 Win. Mag., and I grabbed a couple boxes of Frontier ammunition, loaded with 180-grain Hornady Interlock bullets. The name on the box was not Hornady; it was Frontier. This was the beginning of Hornady’s loaded ammunition endeavor, and I remember it being quite a while before I could get a handload to beat the accuracy of that factory load. |

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is suing to stop Washington initiative I-1639 from being allowed on the ballot this November. The News Tribune reports I-1639 raises the minimum age for long gun purchases from 18 to 21, requires a special background check for “assault weapon” purchases, and requires perpetual checks on all gun owners, to keep the state aware of those who must forfeit their right to keep and bear arms. |
