Peninsula Congresswoman Jackie Speier took part Monday in a "sit-in" against gun violence while dressed in red, white and blue. At the annual Fourth of July festival in Redwood City, it was a day of celebration -- with a message. Holding signs reading, "Disarm Hate," Speier and anti-violence advocates chanted "No more gun violence!" outside the Fox Theatre on Broadway while calling for responsible gun legislation and mandatory background checks for all gun sales.

In the wake of the Orlando mass shooting, President Barack Obama and many others called for gun control. But some members of the LGBT community in Houston have responded in a different way. Jeff Sanford is manager of the Shiloh Gun Range in Northwest Harris County. He says ever since they started offering free concealed handgun classes to LGBT individuals, “the response has been out of this world.”

More than 300 people marched through the streets of Inverness in Citrus County to show their support for the Second Amendment on the morning of Fourth of July. Many carried American flags on this Independence Day, and all marchers carried loaded guns. “I believe in the American right to be able to bear arms and not have anybody try to take them away,” said participant Terry Stimpfling.

A U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning all domestic violence offenders from owning guns drew differing responses from Wyoming's congressional delegation. The 6-2 ruling on June 27 upheld the broad reach of a law that Congress passed in 1996 barring people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence from owning guns. Wyoming's congresswoman opposed the decision, saying denying a person's Second Amendment rights for life is too harsh in many cases, while the state's two U.S. senators were more cautious in their reactions.

Any Pennsylvanian willing to spend several hundred dollars on a handgun, rifle or shotgun also needs to put down $5 for a background check. Depending on your viewpoint, that’s either too much money for a constitutional right, or a modest cost to ensure public safety.

Liberal Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by aging activist John Lewis of Georgia, resorted to the same whiny, childish behavior exhibited by college freshmen in the 1960s with their recent 26-hour sit-in publicity stunt on the floor of the House of Representatives. This was in clear contravention of the rules of order. The hypocrisy here is overwhelming.

AZ Family reports that gallery owners Pete and Valerie Fowler believe the city made the decision, in part, because of the terror attack in Orlando, but the PRD contends it voted to reject the gallery prior to that. PRD spokesman Gregg Bach said, “The planning committee was not comfortable with an exhibit/game that presented guns in a fun or glorified way.” Pete observed, “If it had happened immediately following the shooting in Orlando, I would have been a bit more understanding, but this was just out of the blue. For us to make this business work, we have to get into big events like (Fabulous Phoenix 4th).”

ETSU revealed its policy last month, but so far, just 11 people have signed up to bring their guns on campus. Only full-time faculty who have a valid concealed carry permit are eligible. “There could be a lot more who choose to exercise this option,” said ETSU spokesperson Joe Smith. “We have the process set up and will work with anyone who wants to bring a concealed weapon to campus.”

How far will the so-called “mainstream” media go to cover up times when a good guy with a gun stops a bad guy with a gun? A recent incident in which an armed citizen stopped a mass shooting at a South Carolina nightclub has answered that question for us. Here’s the story. A number of patrons of a nightclub in Lyman, S.C., were standing outside the club early last Sunday morning when a man got into an argument with another man. According to deputies with the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, the man pulled out a gun and began firing into the crowd, hitting three people.

Once again, following the horrific shooting in Orlando, the advocates of gun control are in full voice. Congressional Democrats have even conducted an unprecedented sit-in and shoutfest to stop the workings of the House of Representatives. The difficulty the Democrats face is that, stripped of the emotion and politically driven posturing, their legislative demands either flagrantly violate the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens, or are hopelessly ineffective and unenforceable against would-be terrorists and mass murderers.

Amid all the overheated rhetoric we’re hearing from the media and anti-gun politicians lately about so-called “assault rifles,” the dirty little secret that anti-gunners don’t want you to know is that these firearms are not “military,” they’re not “weapons of war,” and they’re not used in more than a tiny proportion of all crimes.

Days after the Orlando gay nightclub shooting, a fed-up emergency room doctor from New Orleans flew to Washington, hoping the assault-rifle massacre that claimed 49 victims might spur movement on gun legislation. In particular, Dr. Jay Kaplan, like many of his colleagues, wanted Congress to lift a 20-year-old amendment that effectively bans most federally sponsored academic research into gun violence.

The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says a report summarizing the ages of deer taken during the 2015 hunting season is now available on the department's website. The department had asked hunters to provide a tooth from dead deer and says it was able to get accurate ages from more than 4,000 deer. Deer project leader Nick Fortin says it's not appropriate to draw conclusions from one year of data, but says the state thinks people are interested in seeing the information.

Rifles, muskets, long-bows and hand-grenades are inherently democratic weapons. A complex weapon makes the strong stronger, while a simple weapon — so long as there is no answer to it — gives claws to the weak. — George Orwell
