"Gun crimes, suicides and firearms-related accidents declined last year at the same time that firearm and ammunition sales climbed, according to data from the US Treasury Department released by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)."
"While this revelation tends to debunk long-standing claims by gun control proponents that more guns in circulation leads to more crime, gun rights organizations contend that this bolsters their contention that armed citizens deter criminals." ... |

"It is a ghastly fact of public safety that for the past three years the most basic information about illegal gun trafficking in America has been hermetically classified as a state secret - kept off limits to the public and the news media. The nation used to be told, for example, that 57 percent of crime guns came from just 1 percent of gun dealers, and something should be done about that." "But - shhh - not any more: not since a malleable Congress and administration buttoned up reams of vital information by putting the privacy of unscrupulous gun dealers over the safety of the public." ... |

"The ad starts with a sober, simulated news report. A news anchor, looking directly into the camera, warns viewers about Brazil's proposed gun ban. 'People are misrepresenting the disarmament issue,' she says. 'It won't disarm criminals.' The anchor fades and a news-on-the-march montage begins, highlighting freedom's red-letter days. Nelson Mandela is released from prison. A single man impedes a row of tanks in Tiananmen Square. The Berlin Wall falls. 'Your rights are at risk,' says the anchor, returning after the inspiring film clips. 'Don't lose your grip on liberty.' ..."

The new government, which has recently been elected after a campaign where gun control was central, has now decided to abandon the firearm registry."

"Melvin is a straight forward example of what you see is what you get. A graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy, he spent 30 years as a member of the Naval Reserve and retired as a captain. He's qualified to command anything that sails. He and his wife retired inland, partly looking for a non-ocean view."
"Melvin's candidacy is simply motivated - he's a hard core conservative, Ms. Hellon isn't. One of their biggest disagreements occurs over social issues such as abortion. Melvin is pro-life while Ms. Hellon is pro-choice. Their biggest agreement appears to be over the Second Amendment where both score well with the NRA." ... |

The facility, constructed and operated by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, promises to be one of the foremost shooting sports venues in the nation. The ISRA-PVF is advising the state's law-abiding gun owners that Blagojevich's presence at the Sparta ribbon cutting ceremony should not be taken as an indication that the governor supports the shooting sports. To the contrary, Blagojevich is probably the most anti-gun governor Illinois has ever elected." ... |

The state's new concealed-carry law is already drawing interest in the state capital.
The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office reports that 28 people picked up applications Monday, the first day since the new look took effect.
Kansas is now the 48th state that allows people to carry concealed weapons.
The permits will be issued after January 1, and they will be good for four years.
The process includes fingerprints and a $150 fee, and applicants must be a Kansas resident and U.S. citizen at least 21 years old. Eight hours of training is also required.
Concealed weapons are banned in many public places, including city halls, schools, churches and state office buildings. |
